Sydney Subbies 2025

Overall a pretty good mix of premiers. No clubs with more than 2 premierships* and only a few clubs with 2 (Colleagues, Waverley, UNSW & St Pat's).
*edit - Colleagues with 3 premierships including Halligan!

A perfect season in Kentwell is pretty incredible and whilst I was hoping for the upset need to give the lads from Hunters Hill their dues. Great season. You expect the odd undefeated season in the lower divisions or grades but to make it through a really tough Kentwell season with no loss is some effort.

Rep team also looks pretty strong. Not familiar with everyone named but if the large Blueys and Hunters contingent lead the team like they played on Saturday they'll be competitive. Hard to question the merit of selections when you don't know who nominated either but are there any players south of Div 2 (other than the Penrith fella) who could feel aggrieved?
Its always going to be hard to get that exposure in the lower divisions. Its actually a shame cause it might deter talented players from sticking around at a lower division clubs if they ever wanted to search for rep honours

What a day of Grand Finals at Concord yesterday.

Did anyone else think it was disappointing from Newport and Mosman, not bringing much of a crowd for their colts? Was barely anyone from either clubs supporting their young ones.

My understanding is the Rep team selectors approached a few Beecroft forwards, who were not able to accept the invitation to trial as they picked up injuries during the finals. I understand Beecroft's fullback has been included in the squad after a selected back withdrew due to injury!

There will always be a top-heavy focus - they're not analysing every single player over every single game, so you have a look at the 1st Grade as the club are likely identifying them as their top 15 players. I'm surprised they looked at Div Two even given you'd assume (rightly or wrongly) that the best players would be at the best clubs - there is definitely a difference in the types of players and styles across the divs; even though I think the quality of rugby in Div Two is incredible having watched plenty of games this season, the Prelims and GF showed me just how talented the top Divs are. It's definitely noticeable but that's also not a dig at D2.

They're the outliers IMO - Waverley had the "worst" day schedule wise and killed their time at the Bath Arms up the street. Newport and Mosman only had the 1 game - you could have argued they could potentially have had that game separate and incorporated the Sutherland into the day at Concord. The fact they had any support (and both the Breakers and Whales had a vocal contingent present, let it be known) is a testament to the clubs being invested in their Colts programs. That game almost knocked the wind out of me.

Colts rep team was posted, taken down and now posted again!

Strong representative from Div 1 & 2 with a handful from Penrith, Old Barker and LCOI. None from Knox is curious but probably due to lack of nominations. Unsurprisingly Newport and Mosman with the most representatives and the other top performers with 2.

Did you not hear the Newport chants? They had two buses of supporters.
Ps Travel time from Newport Concord is 1.10hr. So not just down the road.

I also heard the "Whales" remix close to full-time Heavy - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I guess.

Not an easy trip, I've done the reverse - there were definitely plently of Breakers at the ground

With the announcement of subbies rugby team of the year I thought I would have a crack at div 3 team of the year.

1. Russell Yates (Hornsby)
2. Lachlan Scott (Knox)
3. Jackson Cole (Hornsby)
4. John Piekuta (LCOI)
5. Dominic Boyce (Hornsby)
6. Brad Meehan (Beecroft)
7. Michael Brinnand (Hills) (c)
8. Luke Meehan (Beecroft)
9. Thomas McNeil (Beecroft)
10. Hunter Bird (Hornsby)
11. Luke Ward (Hills)
12. Thomas Gibberson (Beecroft)
13. Samuel Horner (Beecroft)
14. Dominic Wilson Southon (Hills)
15. Dylan Madden (Beecroft)

16. Angus Macqueen (Hornsby)
17. Rohan Cook (Knox)
18. Jaime Waters (Hills)
19. Ian Thompson (Knox)
20. Hamish Perring (Hornsby)
21 Joshua Parsonage (Knox)
22. Lachlan Brooke (Beecroft)
23. Shaun Williams (Hills)

Team was based on best players in each position from what I saw and not from a team perspective eg does the team need a kicker or is there enough jumpers. Players were also not moved out of position to fit in the team, eg backrowers were not put in to the second row.

There were some closes misses and others particularly in the tight 5 which were put in with no real confidence.

Team representation
Beecroft: 7 = 6 starters + 1 bench
Hornsby: 6 = 4 starters + 2 bench
Hills: 5 = 3 starters + 2 bench
Knox: 4 =1 starters + 3 bench
LCOI: 1 Starter
Blacktown: 0

Team representation is equivalent to where each team came on the ladder. Beecroft dominated the backs and backrow, Hornsby heavily represented in the pack with only 1 back, Hills reps were split in forwards and back.

Piekuta only played 5 games during the season at 2nd row and one at prop. Hardly one of the best under comp. He was easily replaced by Edward Thompson through out the year or I’d have added Liang from Blacktown had he played more football this year.

CR, hats off to your selections. I would make a few changes though:
Replace Hunter Bird (Hornsby) with Lachlan Brooke (Beecroft). My logic - in the 3 games Beecroft & Hornsby has played this year, both times Beecroft beat Hornsby was when Lachlan Brooke was in the side at 10. Brooke better controlled the game in the GF compared to Hunter Bird.

I would replace 7. Michael Brinnand (Hills) (c) with Jack Axmam. Axman is a devasting defender and bent the defence line so many times as well as scoring 6 tries compared to Brinnand 5. I would have Luke Meehan as captain - Div 3 best & fairest.
Positionally (even though out of position) I would replace Michael Brinnand (Hills) with Hamish Perring (Hornsby) in the run on side. This bloke can play! Brinnand would come off the bench in my squad. Also Luke Russo would be considered in my team.

Watching Beecroft in the GF replay, they could seriously challenge the 2nd Div GF teams.

Nice work CR!

Yeah very happy to be wrong about any position especially the the tight 5. Didn't realize Piekuta played so few games.

Have no problems with any of those suggestions.

Backrow was hard for me with 5 standout players ( L Meehan, B Meehan, Axman, Brinnard and Perring). I was nearly tempted to put Perring and Axam as second rows as they both could probably play there, or do a 6-2 split an add axam to bench. Brinnard in my opinion is probably the only true 7 hence why he got the spot with the rest being more 6/8s. I also think he is a good captain.

Bird v Brooke was also very tough as they are both high quality tens, would be happy to swap the starting and bench spots. In the end it probably worked against Brooke that I had already put a Beecroft 9, 12,13,15. Hall the Beecroft winger (equal third tryscorer) was probably hurt by similar logic in a 50/50.

I’m intrigued as to how the 1st Grade sides would match up amongst the divisions. Take away the wear and tear of having to field more teams etc in the higher grades. Just focus on the 1st Grade sides.

I think Div 1 is streets above everyone, especially the top few teams. How would Beecroft or Valley go against UNSW? I don’t think there’s a lot of difference between these sides in the lower divisions.

Would be interesting to see a hit out between the grand finalists from each Div in a FA cup style comp in the lead up to the Div 1 GF. Could do a GF on the Friday night before Kentwell. Assuming all the clubs and player buy in.

I’ve always thought an inter-divisional FA style competition would be awesome. No idea how or if it could be run though.
I think the trouble you’d find is the difference between the quality of clubs throughout the divisions. Merrylands could match it with UNSW but would it be constructive/safe for Mac Uni or Blacktown etc to have a cricket score run up against them.
You might be able to filter teams that way. Maybe an A and a B comp, top 4 from each division in A and bottom 4 for in B. That way you can still involve everyone but you don’t have the big mis matches.

If lighting was improved across the grounds, you'd run it midweek. The problem then becomes the sheer number of clubs.
I think this is massively important for clubs as a whole. Whilst out of their control, it’s important for the game to have this flexibility in playing games outside of the normal 3:15 Saturday window. Also being able to do things like this.

Or just make it an "opt in" comp for those that want to mix it with the other divs

Will be interesting to see how the subbbies rrep team goes at the Australian Shield.

I feel like they should be aiming to be atleast top 3? thoughts?

The Country sides will be strong I think.

Renegades are represented in the ADF side that the Subbies boys will play on Thursday. Keen to see how that goes as ADF played a trial against ACT Griffins and got done 66-0 I believe.
