Sydney Subbies 2025

Based on the fact they appealed the decision to be dropped to Division 2 a couple years ago, it doesn't surprise me they want to to be promoted and they will rely on the club championship ladder to back them up.

Is promotion in the clubs/competitions best interest that's a tough one.
Hard to know. No one can really know. They had a bad choice of head coach in 2023 and it showed on the field. They kept him for 2024 then realised it was a mistake and let him go early, effectively went 2024 with no proper head coach. They had big discipline problems as well but started to turn that around last year and it has been much better this year. They have a top notch coaching team this year and it has turned things around. You'd think if they can keep them in place then the trajectory will stay on the up. But who knows?

Their lower grades have been a shambles for years. They need to improve cattle throughout the grades

Yes, they need depth. Would they get more players next year if they were in div 1? Maybe. All anyone can do is speculate. They do have a steady stream of juniors flowing into colts then grade now which has been a long time in the making.

Fletch - out of interest, from western sydney subbies club perspective have you had much to do with Simon Kacimaiwai and the new Western Sydney program? I would have thought the whole thing hinges on getting the schools playing rugby which then feeds all the different clubs. Have they openly said that their aspiration is to get the Emus back into SS at some point in the future?
Hey @Crashy
Yea Simon has been out a few times along with Fludey who has been regularly coming out or keeping tabs.
As an observation he doesnt know what he doesnt know, so I've been transparent with what goes on around the place.
i.e. we hosted a gala day for the North West schools comp as Penrith Anglican have been based at NRP and invited him out. Also flagged with him that a few games were cancelled due to no referees. He was onto it ensuring its addressed. Not sure if he ended up attending as I was at work. He has come out to a home game, training night, over 35s games and I'd assume same with juniors.
We also had a Western Sydney night at Merrylands RSL where every Sydney/ NSW union was represented and all clubs invited.
Another example is we are happy to host the Cultural clubs/ Pasifika Cup teams but the organisation has been loosely through members of the different clubs in the past and we have insisted the clubs go through Simon if they want to use the ground to help him navigate the landscape there but I don't think its been taken up yet to my knowledge.

If you watch plight of the emus it would seem that way.

Some great Grandfinals around the grounds today. Some upset results in a few games and some dominant teams blowing the rest of the comp away.
Only complaint is that with all the finals on the same day at the same time and the Div 1 first week of the finals and a Wallabies test, as an unaffiliated spectator it’s hard to watch multiple games at once.

UNSW win the 1st grade gf after years of hurt. Hearing rumours the Petersham prop was red carded in 15. I would not want to be him right now and have to face his team mates.
Yes, UNSW with an extra man for 65 mins. They had a lot of possession, 3 tries from about 55 phases each on the line, the 4th from an 80m Intercept. Until the send off Petersham were looking good, up 12-0. After that they still looked dangerous when they had the ball but they didn't have enough, were on the wrong side of a heavy penalty count.

If you watch the footage, there isnt alot in it. I'm sure the Petersham boys are blowing up.
No one saw it at the ground except the touchie. One guy said he thought he saw a shove, touchie said it was a punch. Given one of the UNSW players later threw someone to the ground and dropped an elbow onto his throat less than 2m from the touchie for only a penalty, you'd assume that the red must have been close to a full on homicide.

Sounds like an upsetting night at the lady Hampshire mate. Div one awaits with lots of big losses.

Wouldn't know, never been to the hampy. I've said before, I very much doubt subbies would promote Petersham, they are not well liked among the powers. I reckon UNSW will get the call up at last and it will not end well.

There will be plenty of space for promotion to Div1 next year so I wouldn’t rule out both UNSW & Petersham being promoted.

Newport must have recorded the worst performance across senior grades in Div 1 in a long time. HeavyD will be making a case for Newport to stay in Div1 based on their canteen takings. Rumours at Porters have it they are accepting bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies over the bar next year.

Lindfield have proved time and time again they are not a Div 1 club, although might arm wrestle with Drummoyne to hang in, but we know who has the political swing at the subbies board meetings.

Not a lot in it but he does clearly lash out at the head which you just cannot do anymore. Don't think shammies have too much to complain about as that's just the way the game is officiated now

Surely the top 3 divisions should look something like this next year. Div 1 will have a sook about the bye but in the interest of overall health of the divisions it makes the most sense to keep promotion off the table for Div 1 for next season.

Newport dominated Div 2 in 2024 and got battered in every grade bar colts in 2025. UNSW and Petersham would be delusional to think they’d have the ability to match it there unless they got some serious reinforcements. Lindfield I’d keep up there for another year due to strong numbers but they need some quality if they want to avoid a tough 2026.

Newport relegated and Hills promoted to Div 2 off the back of 3 solid grade sides this year makes a pretty competitive Div 2 for next year.

Redfield and Hawkesbury Valley promoted to Div 3 as they’re clearly above the standard of Div 5. Blacktown down to Div 5 after a pretty poor season bar a late second grade run.

I think that’s the most responsible setup for next year on the balance of things. Obviously shit will hit the fan come pre-season as is Subbies heritage. Thoughts?

I think if you’re going to go with 7 teams in Division 1 you should look at keeping that the same across 2/3. A 7/7/7 split I think is better than 7/8/6.

Bringing those clubs up into Div 3 leaves question marks about the Colts comp in that Div with only 4 teams currently having a colts. Potentially someone like Kings could fill the gap from Div 4 as they’ve run 2 grades and colts this year.
