Sydney Subbies 2025

I wonder if the Blacktown Beecroft game will be double points or they are planning on rescheduling?
I think both sides would appreciate not having to fit in a mid week game given they are at either end of the table.
We already have the possibility of a Triple Point Round for Blacktown in this division against Knox.
Tough road ahead for Blacktown boys if they want to play all these catch up games.

UNSW – Briars. UNSW on a roll. That wont change this week. Briars improving but wont disturb the UNSW squad on their way to Div 1. UNSW by 12
I’m hearing Briars have a lot of their players back this week. Will still be very hard to beat uni at home on ladies day, but will be a close one I think.

Uni going well but maybe a wake up call is on the cards.

A good old fashioned Uni stack job should see them home by 50. Best of luck to Briars, me thinks they'll need it.

Running 5 grades with 10 guys on the bench in Grade plus a full colts squad. UNSW must be a lock to move up next year if they can keep those numbers up. Especially with 2 sides not running 5 grades in Division 1.
Similarly with the numbers of players on the bench for Irish they must be close to running a 4th grade which is great news for Div 2 next year.

Would love to see some Friday night footy. Get along to it if it’s local and see some other clubs or catch up on NSW Rugby TV. Would be great to have a beer watching some other clubs.
I know not every club is capable and players aren’t available and refs etc but maybe could do 1 game a month would give an opportunity to rotate it across between all clubs in the division as something to look forward too.
Play lower grades (if needed) on the Saturday and play 1s and 2s or Colts on the Friday night.

Basically hexagon Rugby for the O35s?

Did I just see a well known subbies player throw a brown eye at the channel 7 news crew over a story they were running about tow truck overcharging? $5400 to tow a car 4kms. Good money if you can get it!!

hello heavy

Could there be a strategic sponsorship opportunity here with Blue Mountains towing services and Newports Catering Services for Subbies?

This is potentially a great opportunity for subbies to help grow the grassroots game - ensuring guaranteed travel and catering for players.

Maybe trial it for subbies board for their kentwell lunch?

ptizy pls take to the board.

I’m not talking about all games every month unless all clubs could/wanted to run it. But similar idea.
Just something different to pull in people that may not be there on a Saturday afternoon. Similar to the magic round idea last week.
The rest of the rounds would run as normal but this would just provide clubs with a different option.

I guess we can now understand how they can afford to travel to the other side of Sydney for Training and games.

UNSW have been on the brink of this success for 5+ years now and consistently 2nd or 3rd on the club championship. Have come up against some good opposition like Lindfield and Newport but seems as though 2025 is their time. Well done to them. Unsure how many players attend the Uni but will semester break have any effect on their roll towards final. Given their critical mass, I'd guess not.

Divsion 3, Round 7 Predictions:

Beecroft @ Blacktown:
This one will be a cricket score. Blacktown has been getting touched up by some of the lower quality sides in Division 3. If Beecroft names a full strength side I see this one getting ugly fast. Try fest for the Crofties - particularly in their excellents backs. Beecroft by 40. I'll take Blacktown in 2s in a close one and Old Barker handily in Colts.

Knox @ LCOI: Game of the round. Tensions soured after a close 12-5 victory for Knox at Lofberg last time round, when a young player got hold of the club socials and dropped a 'better luck next time @LCOI' on the results post. These two sides do not like each other, and LCOI Ladies Day at Tantallon sets the stage for a boil over of epic proportions. I think Knox actually blew a few opportunities in that first round and are a cut above LCOI, but a Ladies Day ambush isn't out of the question. Give me Knox by 7 in a close, fiery one. I'll take Knox by 10 or so in 2s and Knox by 30 odd in Colts.

Hills @ Hornsby: Hills will be desperate to their slide, whilst Hornsby have been a much-improved side lately and always impress at Waitara. This should be a good game, but I think Hills runs away with it towards the middle of the second half. Hills by 12. I'll take Hills in 2s also. Colleagues 2s Colts should make it 0-3 for Hornsby at home this week. Feel free to prove me wrong boys!

Yours in praising the sun gods this week,
PFE2

Yep, any time as club is able to build up to division 1 numbers and quality in the current environment, we should certainly be applauding that. Who's currently struggling enough in Division 1 that is a feasible relegation candidate though?

After only a few rounds (a lot can change between now and R14) you'd say Newport or Drummoyne. They haven't had a fast start in the top grades. don't have 5s and will have some tough days in 2025 against the heavyweights.

If there is one thing that can be taken from previous years, the Club Championship is not what it used to be and doesn't hold the same value as it did previously. In my view, it's an award/achievement the top clubs in each division aspire to. It seems to be less important at the lower end with Subbies looking at various other measure of capacity/potential/strength. With that said, I'd be reluctant to relegate Drummoyne or Newport even if they happened to finish 8th on the CC. These are clubs that have the critical mass and infrastructure to improve.

Do you go with a 9 team div 1 in 2026 and bring in UNSW and a bye? the return to a 10 club division was rejected before the 2024 season and I'd guess that remains the case. Also as it stands no one in Div 2 other than UNSW are close to Div 1. Petersham would be the closest but have had their struggles in recent years and a lack depth. St Pat's are well off the pace this year and have had a big personnel change in the grades. Forest, similar to St Pat's, don't seem to have the quality of the past 5 years and their colts situation is dicey. Briars don't have the quality or depth and have been shown up a bit this year without the allstar 1s team.

However it goes, I can't see anyone from Div 2 getting relegated. The 6 club format with Irish getting topped up by Burraneer and Waverley is crying out for more competition. LCOI are on the right track. Can Beecroft and/or Hills bounce back. Do Knox have ambitions to return?
