Sydney Subbies 2025

From reports Colts are looking red hot. Newport Grade & lower grade Rats are fighting off a cashed up local league side who appear to have a $100k war chest to build an A Grade League team.
Would this happen to be the Turbos funding the Mona Vale raiders as a tax deduction? Or have the Avalon bulldogs got some big hitters

It's an arms race in league circles and shows no signs of stopping.

It also feeds a mentality of not paying fees to rugby clubs because they think their presence is payment enough.

Being ignorant of history leads to a lack of understanding the present - RL was built on allowing players to share in the funds of a club when the club was bringing in money off the work of the players. Obviously, we're not charging gate in Subbies so it's a moot point, but that's not the case everywhere else.

If you're a "rugby player", would you rather get paid around half of a full season's Subbies subs to play one game, or pay a few hundred to play 1 game of 4ths? If you're a tradie, would you be willing to risk weeks of pay and medical fees if you should get injured, or happily take some cash that's on offer?

I fully support the idea of "playing for the sake of playing" but I'm also not going to demonise players for choosing to take some money to play, so long as they're doing things by the rulebook of their sport.

Hmmm - that's the narrative that Rugby League likes to spin but a closer look at the history of League in Australia points to a group of businessmen who owned sports fields wanting to get a slice of the lucrative gate takings that Rugby games was generating that they couldn't access due to not owning a team play at their venue. What better way to co-opt new players into your competition than by saying they are going to be paid for the service... except they weren't ... not in a meaningful sense and certainly not in a minimum wage sense either. One only needs to look at how pitiful the so called "wages" were that the early League guys received to know that they had been conned.

And I don't know the if the "$100 for a win, $50 for a loss" contract would cover your medical expenses and weeks out of work either.

I hate the League narrative that it's working for the little guy and doing the right thing by the battler. It isn't and it never has. It's just been using them to generate money for themselves under false pretences.

Anyway - these points have been argued for decades....

I think @Crashy's point was that it doesn't say much for your game if you have to pay people to play it. The motivation to play amateur sport is, for most part, pure. We do it because we love it and we'll always have that over League.

Subbies was open to payment until a decade ago. EDIT: And there might still be a lot of things happening that aren't payment, but aren't NOT payment, in terms of incentives.

Let's not talk ourselves up *too* much.

As am I - it was the same arms race as league clubs have in a lot of ways, without pokies money to back it up...

I'm talking about the history of the original schism - the points still stand today but don't get me wrong, I believe Subbies should remain amateur completely. We aren't generating gate revenues or even TV revenues - this is the place for rugby players who want to play rugby for the love of the game.

I just don't think it's fair to blame a bloke not wanting to get beaten up for free when someone else is offering cash for less effort (sorry to any leaguies but having watched both on a weekly basis, I'd sooner play as a forward in league than as a forward in union). Those aren't players who are playing for the love of the game, they're playing for cash in hand and that's fine too. Happens in just about every other sport.

Old Iggies merged with Lane Cove last year and formed Lane Cove Old Iggies. They play in Div 3 and there Colts made the Grand final last year so good signs for the club

The Ghost of Bernie is your best source for all things Iggies in here.. I enjoy his quips, no matter how shill-ish they may be ;)
Solid first official session for LCOI tonight. Just under 50 bodies split fairly evenly between Colts and Grade.
Here's his early comms on season 2025, the second one for the joint merger. Excited to see if they can build on some promising momentum from 2024..

Even though it'll be a weaker Easts side given I'd imagine they're taking the top 23 up to QLD, this kind of stuff is great for the game and a great yard stick to see how big the gap really is between the two comps... go Mountain Goats I'd say all of subbies will be rooting for you.

I recall a weaker Norths side squaring off against Knox (in their competitive Div 1 days) at Wakehurst Oval 8 or so years ago, was a great contest.

The season is fast approaching - any insight on what the Divs 2 to 5 might look like?

By the look of social media Waverley have had some huge numbers at training and Blueys appear to be going from strength to strength. Otherwise seems eerily quiet in the world of Subbies!
