Sydney Subbies 2019

Indianna Trophy day.

Let's hit that $10,000 mark.

Smashed it. Official figure coming out this week but I can say we're double-digit percentage above $10K.

Dukes are top blokes, in case I hadn't mentioned it at least three times.

On the rumour mill: I hear Merrylands will struggle to get 2 Grades on the park based on preseason numbers.

Was an interesting Div 5/6 meeting on Monday. Besides a few questions over who could field a 2nd grade, the big news was Menai.

Having won every comp they've been in, they're not sure they can field a team this year. The fuck?

Rumour Ronald

Herbert Moran (7)
Rumour Ronald McDonald. You want lies with that?

Which Div1 club has been refusing invites from lower div clubs for trial matches? "We're too strong for a club like you. It's a waste of time for our players. We'd get nothing out of beating you 100-0 in every grade"

Also on this: spoke to Merrylands on Monday at the Div meeting. Their training numbers are always low apparently, but Subbies are asking them very nicely if they'd like to play 4th Div with only 2 compulsory Grades, which could help stabilise that comp nicely I guess.

But it means another club who could be 5th Division, aren't.

Could we see another North and South split?

That is what I'd go for, simply because it gives home & away matches each time. As the guys from Dukes were saying: they like to reciprocate pub visits. If you come to our pub, we'll go to yours, and vice-versa.

The travel - even for a First Grade kickoff - can be a punish. Rouse Hill to Burraneer is not quick. Engadine to Dee Why either.

A few clubs are putting Colts out - Chatswood x 2, Sea Lice, Burraneer. Shame they can't slot in as 2nd Grade...

Not surprised. Half their team tried to put on a stink against poor old Petersham at the 7s on the weekend. Vintage Merrylands.

Shirts were removed, so you know they meant business.

The talk up by the canteen was that there was some pretty reciprocal crap happenin on the fields from both teams. The management for Merrylands was top notch on the sideline, and the mouthy touch judge didn’t help the case.

"Classic" Merrylands were not in evidence when we played them last year. They know the conditions they're under, and that under no uncertain terms can they fuck up.

However, I'm told they're being considered for 4th Division in order to stabilise things there without Third Grade being compulsory. Putting aside the problems Mac Uni and Northern Saints are also having with putting Thirds out, and I'm not sure that is the answer.

Maybe 4th Division is better off having 6 Clubs, dropping Saints to 5th Division with Merrylands, Convicts, Lane Cove, and us, and maybe we can get 5th going again without ruining 4th.

Here's my thoughts:

Fourth Division
Briars
Canterbury
Macquarie Uni
Oatley
Sydney Harlequins
Sydney Irish

Fifth Division
Burraneer
Lane Cove
Manly Savers
Merrylands
North Cronulla
Northern Saints
Renegades
Sydney Convicts

Sixth Division
Alexandria Dukes
Chatswood
Collaroy
Dee Why
Engadine
Maccabi
Wakehurst
Western Raptors

Seems relatively balanced however I think you’ll find Maccabi will end up in Div 5 (2 grades with the Jewish Games this year). That would probably see Manly/Burra come down.

Hope the Raptors aren’t going to come across issues with travel to places like Engadine through the year.

Also is it confirmed that Menai are gone 100%? Or do they still have time to turn it around?

Menai had until Friday(the one just gone) to give an answer, not sure what the answer was though.

Lane Cove had a competitive hitout on Saturday against Camden and St Pats 2nd grade sides. Another trial on Saturday week with Manly Savers and Chatswood. Had roughly 25-30 at training each week but our major issue is a lack of shorter stature, bigger boned, lack of neck length, angry demeanour type of player.

It might turn out that 2nd Grade just have to play uncontested scrums - for once we're fairly healthily served by front rowers, even if some are the wrong side of a particular age and weight bracket.

So if I run on, I will play flanker :)

I've suggested various things to Subbies like playing 10s for Second Grade if that helps give guys a run, but it has fallen on deaf ears so far.

Nope - can confirm their rep at Div meeting said 1 Grade only. Last year they would have run about 20 blokes in total and by Round 13 they were down to a bare 15.

What are King's Old Boys and St. Ives doing?

Last I heard from Subbies (a week ago), Kings OB aren't committing past Halligan Cup.

SnIves aka Northern Saints will be in Div 4. Where apparently multiple clubs beside the nigh-promoted Merrylands will not field a Third Grade.

Bloody hell.
