And then you've got clubs like Beecroft suffering Dead Cat Bounce, having trounced everyone in 2015 in Div 4, having dropped three divisions, and now back to struggling in Div 2.

The thing is, without payment, I struggle to see the incentive for clubs to field high grade teams.

You're still not getting it.

Subbies rugby is about playing for the fun of it with you're mates. Premierships are great but good clubs keep on going comfortably without them.

Seriously, how sad must you're life be that you need to be paid to play park footy against a bunch washed up never were's (and proud of it) and guys well past their prime just looking to play slightly competitive matches in the sport they love.

Subbies has no place in the development pathway. Subbies is not for people with any kind of higher representative aspirations. Subbies is for FUN!!!

I'd love the sledging if payments were out in the open. "Hey Champ, couldn't hack in Shute Shield so you thought bashing a couple of over-the-hill old blokes makes you look cool?!?!?!"

There is Shute Shield (NSW), Premier Rugby (QLD) and John I Dent (ACT) for the blokes who think their good enough to be paid to play. For country guys unable to make their city move the Cockatoos are their pathway option.

At no point does Subbies factor into the equation. And the moment it does, Subbies will die. Because it's NOT why Subbies players play.

I apologise for the repetitiveness of this post but you really seem to be struggling with what Subbies Rugby is about

I am merely dealing with a shitty set of circumstances in the best way I can.

If that means I have to get Subbies to do a few things they've never done before, well so be it. The old ways assume a certain set of parameters, and we're not able to align to those parameters. Other clubs may need this in future, and maybe Subbies can start to think up alternatives for smaller clubs facing similar challenges.

One topic of discussion at the mid-year meeting was the relative strength of Division 4 right now. Irish, Canterbury, and Oatley would give most clubs a run for their money in the top grade. Its a major weakness of the Divisional system we have.
In previous years, Oatley certainly weren't powerhouses in div 3 except for their "3rd grade" team which boasted a subbies rep player at the time.

I think they were probably happy to move into 4th div as it is a far more southern Sydney comp. I'd say that fact has probably boosted their numbers as their travel time for away games has been reduced.

Oatley were cake in division 3

Sydney Irish and Canterbury never will come to div 3 as the likelihood of having Colts is none. The only teams I can see coming up to div 3 in the future are lane cove and Oatley.

Seriously I understand your point that people play for the love of the game but I disagree that it is just to have a run with friends.
Subbies is for everyone. People who want to compete, people who want to talk dumb stuff, people who are lonely. People who are athletes.
Whoever you are, there's a place for you in Subbies.
Otherwise,
Why do people train twice a week a second opposed to just showing up like I n park cricket?
Why is the hallogans cup a joke as opposed to a 40 strong comp?

It's because some people want to compete, they are born that way.
Other people just want to tell their mates in a pub they coathangered Matt Giteu or some wallaby and put him in hospital.
Others, just want a weekend run and there's nothing wrong with either.
But don't tell me it's just and only just for fun

Back in the day Balmain would pay their players between 5 and 6 figure amounts to play in division one and put their body on the line.
These are people who needed to play to feed their families or pay rent in the Balmain area which is among the highest in Sydney.

But all that was taken away from a dumb decision by the powers that be because smaller, badly ran clubs had a whinge because they can't or weren't willing to cough up hard cash.

It's like the two brothers where one slammed clam and drunk vodka throughout their twenties whereas the other brother did a law degree over five years and worked up to 9 hours a day to get ahead, then the first brother whining that his finances aren't like his brother in his 40s and life's unfair!

In that metaphor, Balmain is the brother with the law degree.

Five years ago Balmain had star power, crowds in the thousands would come watch. Merchandise was sold, they would regularly make the paper and put subbies on the back pages of the mainstream media. The game had never been so healthy.
Nevilles from other clubs could boast to their children that they sidestepped Sebastian Chabal or knocked Ryan across out.

But that was all taken away to appease clubs who had no clue!

ANd you wantvto to talk about fun?

It's no fun getting belted every week for no cash, so players who just want to play for fun will race to the bottom and they will trigger to fill the A grades.

It's simple. Why can't we have paid first graders (If clubs wish) and fill the lower grades with the speds who just want to have fun and everyone in between?

Imagine, in my vision for the game, walking your dog at the local park and seeing half the wallabies squad line up for Balmain take on Epping with Japanese representatives.

Or Petersham with Ex state of origin players go up against say, Beecroft, who have nabbed an ex NFL star!

You trying to tell me this will reduce interest? No, numbers will be up and the game will never be so healthy.

Try tipping these ones:

Petersham Maroons vs Beecroft 49ers

You sir, are on drugs.

Why am I on drugs?!?!

Because I am the only person in this country who is a visionary regarding the state of the game of Rugby Union here?

If having a vision means I am a drug addict then by all means I am a junkie.

Mate, you're kidding. Your plan to rebuild rugby in this country starts at Subbies. While a great group of clubs with loyal rugby people, it isn't the starting point for any vision regarding our game.

I believe in growth from the ground up. Organic growth that starts obviously at subbies. Grassroots movement.
We tried doing it from the top down in the 90s with Wendell sailor and it did nothing. Then again with the NRC... twice.
Besides, weren't you one of the Neanderthals who dissed my corporate sponsorship idea the other day? Isn't that up your alley of big money at the big end of town?

Natural grassroots movements is where passion is born.
I want us to be Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump presidential cAmpaign.

Bottoms up success.
