What time do the matches kick off there that you guys play rugby in the dark all the time?

Usually Tahs home games kick-off at 7:40pm Sydney time. This year, the Tahs have two afternoon games against the Sharks (24 March @ 3:35pm) and the Crusaders (29 April @ 4:10pm). The sun should still be shining when the Sharks game concludes, but it should be dark by the end of the Crusaders game with the end of daylight saving (summer time) at the end of March.

The Tahs are hoping for big crowds for these two games as there has been some demand for afternoon games as they are more family friendly and in the case of the Crusaders, a popular team.

The day game will draw well as there will be lots of kids. I expect both will be close to sell outs (which means a crowd in the mid 30s unless the members really turn up) at the SFS.

Why don't they play a trial game out west (say parramatta)? I know the answer, they include the SFS trial in the tahs membership packages but hardly anyone turns up so its hard to imagine there would be an uproar if the moved the Sydney trial to the west side of sydney.

We did the same thing. Used difference stadiums but it made it easier for visiting teams to beat a Stormers side with 13 WP players at Bolands home stadium because it feels like a away game for them as well. So the big unions bought out the other stadiums. That is why you will see Newlands, Loftus, Freestate Stadium, Ellispark and Kingsmead as the only venues. The smaller venues get a grant or get paid for not hosting matches. Since one team do not have a stadium for themselves like NSW or they rent it whatever the case why don't they check which staium can they fill 90 percent of the time of get it close to full capacity and only use that stadium. So they can get use to and get the feel for a stadium and atmosphere that feel like home. The crowd can lift a team a great deal and is very important to try and make it a fortress.

TBH, not sure of the last time the Tahs had a day home game. It may have been in 2006, so there may not be much value in the comparison. No doubt the Tahs hierarchy will be doing the day vs night analysis at the end of the 2012 season though.

I remember reading somewhere that Tahs home games were scheduled at night to maximise TV audiences in Australia. But as the Reds games now rate well, they will probably see most, if not all, their home games scheduled at night. So there is the opportunity for the Tahs to get some day games.

I think the reason most people try to struggle to come to agreement on this issue is because it is a case of:

What the investors want V What the corporation needs.

The corporation need both money and investors, and a lot of the money is going to come from high rating games at ANZ Stadium. However, play too many games there, and the investors become fed up and pull their cash out. Waratahs Rugby needs to find - and I believe they have - the perfect balance between playing at ANZ and the SFS in order to reduce the opportunity cost of the income flowing from members up against the income flowing from ANZ stadium.

I think you guys must win a Fifa WC bid. Then there will be a stadium build which NSW can call home after the tournament ended. Check the nice stadium EP/The Kings were left with.

There is no way they will get close to 30 on sunday arvos, high 20s in the current state would be an overwhelming success.

Parramatta is 10 minutes down the road from ANZ and hosts 20000, for a trial maybe, but I don't actualy think a trial match would connect with the locals and make them feel included especially if is against sub standard opposition and using 35 players.

Playing at ANZ is fine, just rotate who plays there each year and no dramas

Add in the fact that this years game is against the crusaders, who normally draw well in Sydney and is on a Sunday afternoon and its late enough in the season when it will likely be a must win game for the tahs, I think it will be a big crowd. I may have been over ambitious on the sharks given it is a Sat arvo match and will clash with local rugby - I was thinking of the saders game in my original comment.

Club rugby in Sydney starts mid- April....should be no clash with the Sharks match on March 24.

How can anyone who has watched rugby at homebush compare the experience favourably to the sfs?
With 32k at sfs last weeks game would have been an entirely different proposition.

Bullshit. The Tahs crowd makes very little difference to the contest, no matter what stadium. To say the result would have been different at the SFS is baseless rubbish.

Saw an artist's impression of what the SCG would look like when it is fully redeveloped in the last few days. In the background, it has the SFS which looked like it has some sort of awning extended over the existing roof. Unfortunately, it was on paper (yeah old school) so I don't have a link to it.

I have no idea what value it adds to the existing set up. Probably a question Al Baxter could answer though.

If you look at that photo in the Australian article I posted there is a shiny silver thing going across the road in front of the SFS. What is that? I thought it was the NRL building but I don't think it it. It looks like a Bridge?

It looks like a foot bridge to get into the place. And if you look to the north they are planning on widening the footpath following the road. Good idea. Will reduce the need of pedestrian/vehicle control to let people cross the street.
