I would imagine that RD is referring to a couple of matches this round that will determine the finals outlook.

Colts 1
Manly vs Warringah - This is virtually a play-off game. The winner should take the 6th spot in the finals. If Warringah win then they only need win one more against Souths or Norths to secure 6th place. If Manly win then they need also win both against Penrith and Wests to snatch 6th spot.

Colts 2
Manly vs Warringah - This is also a vital game for Warringah. They basically need win all 3 remaining games to make finals - an even then rely on other results.

Eastwood vs Sydney Uni - Uni safely in finals. Vital game for Eastwood. They probably need win at least two more games to secure a finals berth, Norths and Penrith to come.

Randwick vs Gordon - Randwick safely in finals. Dependent on results Gordon can probably still make finals without another win but would obviously like to put it beyond doubt. Hard run home with Uni and Easts to follow.

Colts 3
Manly vs Warringah - Must win game for Warringah.

Randwick vs Gordon - Virtually a play-off each week for Gordon from here. Lose one and it's probably time to plan the end of season trip.

Parramatta vs Northern Suburbs - Norths must win everything from here and rely on other results. Parramatta must win at least one game with Easts and Uni to follow to lock in a spot.

It's one thing to forfeit 3rd Grade Colts but to wait until 24hrs before the games to pull out of the 1st and 2nd Grade Colts fixtures is piss-weak in the extreme. Not only have they deprived the Souths boys of the rare opportunity to showcase their skills in front of the Grade players and supporters at Forshaw, but Penrith have just made it clear to all and sundry that they don't give a shit about what anyone else thinks of them.

The Colts games were scheduled for Forshaw this week due to the appalling behaviour of a few of the Penrith players at the games earlier in the year. Penrith players, and an official, were contravening the licensing laws by drinking their own beer inside the ground, and when asked to stop, they threatened to assault the Souths GM! And then we had 2nd Grade Penrith players wanting to start a fight as the teams gathered to cheer on the 1st Grade teams. Souths made it clear to Penrith that unless these issues were addressed adequately, there was no chance our players and supporters would place place themselves at risk by playing at Nepean in the return fixture. A compromise was reached several weeks ago, or so we thought, with the plan to play 1st and 2nd Grade Colts on the main field at Forshaw before the 1st and 2nd Grade fixtures.

Sadly, while I've previously suggested increasing the support for Penrith by sending more of our high-profile schoolboys and rep recruits out there to assist with their playing strength (and, hopefully, the club culture) I now find myself thinking that it probably is time to cut them loose.

That is two forfeits in a week as they were meant to have a make-up game last Wed vs Norths which they also forfeited.

Possibly the mid-week one can be understood - but Sat also = not good.

And their 2nd colts were coming off the back of two consecutive victories!

Two rounds to go now and there is still plenty to play for with a lot of spots still undecided.

Colts 1
Sydney Uni (78 - Gordon, Parramatta) and Randwick (65 West Harbour, Southern Districts) have the top 2 spots sewn up.

Eastwood (56Northern Suburbs, Penrith), Southern Districts (54Warringah, Randwick) and Eastern Suburbs (51Parramatta, Gordon) are all in the mix for the positions 3rd to 5th.
On form Easts should win both and go to a maximum 61 points, Eastwood should account for Penrith and go to 61 points with game in hand, and Southern have two hard – must win clashes to make top 4.
Key Games –Rnd 17 - Eastwood vs Northern Suburbs, Southern Districts v Warringah. Rnd 18 - Southern Districts vs Randwick.

Warringah (47Southern Districts, Northern Suburbs) and Manly (42Penrith and West Harbour) are still in a battle for 6th spot and a finals berth.
On form Manly should win both and go to a maximum 52 points, while Warringah have a harder road home. Warringah need to win 1 game with bonus point and find a win or a bonus point in the other to secure 6th place. If Warringah can only win one game and only find 1 bonus point then both sides will be locked on 52 points and for and against will be telling. Currently Warringah +38, Manly +3.
Key Games –Rnd 17 – Warringah vs Southern Districts, Manly vs Penrith (Manly need the for and against so a win on forfeit might do more harm than good). Rnd 18 – Warringah vs Northern Suburbs.

Northern Suburbs (38), Gordon (33), Parramatta (30), West Harbour (13) and Penrith (1) are all beyond making finals but can have a big impact on whom does.

Colts 2
Randwick (73West Harbour, Southern Districts), Eastern Suburbs (70Parramatta, Gordon) and Sydney Uni (66Gordon, Parramatta) will be the top 3 and should probably finish in that order.

Northern Suburbs (62Eastwood, Warringah) and Southern Districts (54 - Warringah, Randwick) should finish 4th and 5th, but Southern Districts could still mathematically snatch 4th if results went their way.
Key Games –Rnd 17 – Warringah vs Southern Districts, Northern Suburbs vs Eastwood. Rnd 18 - Southern Districts vs Randwick, Northern Suburbs vs Warringah.

Gordon (47Sydney Uni, Eastern Suburbs), Eastwood (39Northern Suburbs, Penrith) and Warringah (38 - Southern Districts, Northern Suburbs) are all in the hunt for the 6th and final place.
On form Gordon will most likely struggle against the heavyweights staying at 47 points. Eastwood should account for Penrith making the Northern Suburbs game vital for them to stay alive. Whilst Warringah need to win everything and rely on other results.
Key Games –Rnd 17 – Warringah vs Southern Districts, Northern Suburbs vs Eastwood, Gordon vs Sydney Uni. Rnd 18 - Northern Suburbs vs Warringah, Eastwood vs Penrith, Gordon vs Eastern Suburbs.

Manly (19), Parramatta (14), West Harbour (11) and Penrith (11) are all looking to finish their seasons on a high in the last two rounds.

Colts 3
Sydney Uni (74Gordon, Parramatta) and Randwick (70West Harbour, Southern Districts) will take the top 2 spots.

Eastwood (55Northern Suburbs, Penrith) and Eastern Suburbs (52Parramatta, Gordon) will round out the top 4.
On form the Eastwood vs Northern Suburbs game looks like it may decide whom finished third.
Key Games –Rnd 17 - Northern Suburbs vs Eastwood.

Warringah (46 - Southern Districts, Northern Suburbs), Parramatta (44 – Eastern Suburbs, Sydney Uni), Gordon (35 - Sydney Uni, Eastern Suburbs), and Northern Suburbs (34Eastwood, Warringah) are all in a battle for the 5th and 6th spots on the ladder and a finals berth.
Warringah have enough comp points to lose both remaining games and still make at least 6th spot, so they will be one of the sides. On form it is hard to see Parramatta or Gordon toppling their more fancied opponents leaving them at 44 and 35 points respectively. Finding a bonus point for Parramatta might be enough as two Northern Suburbs victories with maximum points will only bring them level on 44 points. If Parramatta cannot find a bonus point in the next two weeks then it will come down to for and against and Parramatta have the edge here at -38 while Northern Suburbs are at -120.
Key Games –Rnd 17 – Warringah vs Southern Districts, Parramatta vs Eastern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs vs Eastwood, Gordon vs Sydney Uni. Rnd 18 - Northern Suburbs vs Warringah, Parramatta vs Sydney Uni, Eastwood vs Penrith, Gordon vs Eastern Suburbs.

Southern Districts (32), Manly (26), West Harbour (22) and Penrith (0) can all try to finish the season with a win or two.

Agree Rugbymum, thanks GO111.

There has been an obsession with Schoolboy rugby with the recent champs on, on the Schoolboys thread, meanwhile the real rugby starts with these young Colts.
Rugby (union) is under all sorts of threat at the moment and if we don't nurture these Colts there will be no grade in a few years time....

I'm glad you've taken HJ's mantle (may he RIP if that is indeed what has happened).

Looks like the Woodies and Students clashes this year are played with plenty of emotion. Rd 1 4 Yellows and 1 Red & Rd 2 3 yellows and 1 Red, will be interesting if there is a round 3 in the finals. Anyone at the ground last weekend with a summary of the match?

Great article GO111
My understanding of the rules if teams are on equal points at the seasons end it goes on who won the most games and then for and against

GOIII, can you please explain the workings of the finals

As I understand it, the finals look like this (Correct me if i am wrong)

Week 1 - 1st plays 6th, 2nd plays 5th, 3rd plays 4th.
3 x winners go thru plus highest ranked loser
Week 2 - Highest ranked winner v Highest ranked loser, 2nd highest ranked winner v 3rd highest ranked winner.
2 x winners go thru
Week 3 - Grand Final
