In my experience nearly all clubs know who was at National Champs the previous year. Most clubs have at least one representative there. Secondly, the list of players is published on any number of web sites, and a Google search would turn up the various squad lists pretty quickly. It isn't hard to run a quick google check of any new players schoolboy rockstar status.



And on the subject of player points cap calculation changes,it seems to have had an impact on the ability of some clubs to develop some depth by giving some second and third graders a cameo in a higher grade. Instead of being able to give up to 8 lower grade players from the bench some time in a higher grade, many team sheets are reporting only two or three subs have been used, when last year those clubs would have "blooded" a full bench.



Some may say that this is achieving the intent of the player points cap, however it does lead to situations that the Beasties faced on the weekend.

They did sub but I didn't pay any attention who. They didn't sub any front rowers, and neither did SD so both front rows had a big day at the office.

For all the talk about the points system I didn't think there was much difference between the players ability or fitness (which made it a great game), the difference was the coaches. East where clearly much better coached (without any really dominant individuals), they knew what they wanted to do when, and they had a strategy to play to their strengths.

I wouldn't say better coached, East had 38 points Souths had 25 points that indicates Easts had a lot of higher rated players who have benefitted through rep programs been to GPS and CAS schools. Most Souths players went to non rugby schools and playrd league. Going by your summation of coaching Easts need a new scrum coach. I dont think trying to push a clubs colts coach by putting down other clubs coaches is the way to go.

The Easts 1st colts coach (along with 1st grade) is, as I understand, paid full-time by Easts. I believe the rest of the coaches are not, but I'm not intimate enough with the club to say that with any certainty. This is the first year that the 1st colts coach has been paid.

Club X had n points. Club Y had n-6 points. Therefore Club X has better players and will always win.

Just browse the Schoolboy rep threads at selection time to realise how often the Selectors there get it wrong. Often there is the thickness of a cigarette paper between a kid who makes it and one who doesn't. This minor difference in skills can manifest itself in fairly major differences in the player points allocations.

AFAIK Latu Latinuipulo (New, Class of 14) was not good enough to make Combined States or NSW Schools in 2014, yet he played 1st Grade for the Wicks for most of last year and was selected for NSW U20 this year. IMHO he was one of the few NSW hairdressers that has a chance of making Aust U20. He is worth 1 player point this year. If he makes Aussie U20, he will carry 10 player points (before discount) into season 2017.

Evan Pritchard was an Aust Schools hooker in 2014, and therefore allocated a base value of 6 points (before deductions) in 2015, as was Nick Duffy except he was the #9 in 2014.
Both these high point players failed to curry favour of the NSW U20 selectors in 2016, yet they still carry base points loading of 6 points before discounts.

There are plenty of other cases of young lads missing out at the selectors table at some stage of their journey on the Pathway to Gold.

The Player Points system is flawed. At best it gives an indication of how well thought of the players were at some time in the past.

A team of well coached and motivated Nigel Nobodies worth few player points can outperform the team jam packed with former rock stars.

When I was at school MANY moons ago we played rugby every Wednesday through winter. Now schools only play sport at "gala days". I'm not talking about the leather elbow patch boys, I'm talking a public school in South East Sydney that produced many a Wallaby including a captain.
Why do schools no longer compete weekly during school hours? Also the Waratah Shield was held in high regard. Even just playing in a preliminary Shield game was something special let alone a final! Now it'd like pulling teeth just to get a school to enter it.
If anyone wants to look at why rugby is going backwards look now further than Pulver and the ARU!

Yes I agree, it's been gradually dying a slow death over last 10 to 20 years and there is a lot more to it than blaming one short sighted ARU director. Same causes that have lead to demise in junior club numbers in older age groups.

Simple question - is there anyone in the land of admin who actually reviews player points declarations to check that the points at first instance are correct and then the relevant discounts are applied?

I know that at least some teams, require the individual to sign a declaration as to what rep level they played in the prior year. That must mean the club applies discounts???

Looking at some of the boys I know of, I note that one in Randwick has 0 points allocated notwithstanding playing for NSW 1 in 2015 - so 4 points, maximum player discount would be 50% so his player points should be 2? What happens in 2017 - do his points stay at 2, or go to 1? (i.e. an fresh discount is applied to his 2016 points ( calculated as 2).

So can his points ever drop to below 2 or does it suggest the discounts have been too liberally applied?

Looking at the lists - again from boys I know have played at Rep level, seems quite a few anomalies.

^^ In 2017 the player will have their base rate reassessed against the criteria that has been agreed will apply for 2017. I say that not to be a smartypants but in recognition that each year there are changes to the points scoring criteria.

However, in light of your example, using 2016 criteria, NSW 1 Representative Loading only applies for one year, so their base loading would be 2 (all other players). They would then receive 1 year local discount which would place them on 1 Player Point. Further discounting (say 5 points for 5 years service in a local Junior Club from U10 to U14) is irrelevant because the player is at 50% of their base point value, and they can not go below that.

In Summary (as applicable for Colts)

1. Being at Australian Schools Div 1 is 4 points but only counts from the previous year
2. Being an Australian Schoolboy Representative is 6 points and it counts for two years (2014 or 2015 for Season 2016). Note that it does not spell out whether an Australian Schools Barbarians representative is to be considered a 6 player point Australian Schoolboy Representative or not.
3. Playing more than 8 games for another club in Colts 1 last year is worth 6 points, but only in the first year at the new club.
4. Being an Australian U20 Representative is worth 10 points but only for the 2 years following that representation. i.e. this years crop will only receive their loading for their 2016 selection in season 2017.
5. Holding a current Super Rugby Contract, or Aust 7's Contract is worth 10 points and is obviously applicable only if that contract was valid on 1 Jan 2016. It is not specifically defined whether this applies to players holding a current EPS, Supplementary or Development Squad Super Rugby Contract.

If you have any specific evidence that a player declaration on the Team Sheets is wrong, then probably best to inform the club that you are associated with if you actually want something done about it. Not a lot is going to happen to right the wrongs by ranting about it on here, although it may make you feel good to have had the rant.

Tipping shocker continues with 3/6 last week

Round 5 Tips (Here goes nothing)
Parramatta v Eastern Suburbs. The Mighty 2 Blues are on a roll but the Beasties were impressive against the Hobbits last week, and this form should continue out at Death Valley with the Beasties winning by 15-20. There will be cheese shown but it will not be the home team that is on the naughty boys chair.

Warringah v Gordon. Haven't the Gay Gordons been racking up some impressive scores, he says, ignoring the MMM ambush. The Rats are the improvers of the year, but there is class from 1 - 15 in the Green and Yellow jumpers, even though Lough Snr will be missing. Stags by 20.

Penrith v Manly. Manly by plenty.

Eastwood v Randwick. Randi Wix appear a shadow of their 2015 champion outfit, despite all their U20 and Schoolboy Rockstars. Must be driving their coaching staff nuts. Meanwhile Woodies have been quietly accumulating good performances against some quality opponents. The Match of the Round for me will see the Blue and Whites prevail by 10-15 points.

Northern Suburbs v Southern Districts. Both mobs will be disappointed at missing out on the W from last week and will be keen to get back into the winners circle. The Shoremen probably have the edge in the Rugby Playing department with nearly all the single digit wearers being in their second year of Colts footy. The Hairdressers are fairly evenly balanced with the Shore boys missing Jack Clancy's game management skills. It'll be close (but them I tipped the Hobbits vs Beasts 10-41 loss as a close victory to the Shire Boys so what would I know?). Norths by 10.

West Harbour v Sydney University. The Pirates have an upset or two in them this year. It wont be this week, or if it is it will be in the 3rds and then that won't be an upset as they are undefeated in that grade. The Corporation by lots.

Yes I agree, it's been gradually dying a slow death over last 10 to 20 years and there is a lot more to it than blaming one short sighted ARU director. Same causes that have lead to demise in junior club numbers in older age groups.

If you want an idea of the thinking that has permeated the NSWRU for decades and has thus led us to this position, then examine the words of Roger Davis Chairman of the Waratahs (Kings School & Sydney Uni playing experience).

Pressed as to whether he was saying a move to Western Sydney “would spell disaster” for the Waratahs, Davis said: “Yep. That would be my expectation. Given where our fans are based, where our loyalty lies, where our training facilities are, where our office facilities are, it would be a bridge too far.”

Manly had to forfeit Colts 3 to Penrith on Saturday. My information is that they have been struggling to get a 3rds on the field all season. Not a healthy situation for the club.

Coming from Gordon we know it is not a healthy situation for a club and it may follow that grade will struggle in the future if they don't have the Colts numbers now although Manly may be able to afford for that not to be the case.

I wonder if low numbers has something to do with playing the first 3 home games in Colts at Kierle Park which lacks the atmosphere of Manly Oval and there was no canteen when we played there. They played grade away for the first 3 games (probably due to cricket at Manly Oval) but it would not make me too happy to join a club who treat Colts like this.

Warringah put us on the front field at Narrabeen on Saturday once again with no canteen provided and the Rats people were as disappointed as us about the facilities provided and not getting on their main ground.

Perhaps, but I suspect that it's more to do with lack of recruitment towards the end of last season. The coach moved on/was moved on and there appears to have been little effort at any sort of recruiting. As someone who's been previously involved in building it up some time ago, it's quite sad that a couple of years of inattention have let it slide.

Manly always have to play trials away because they don't get the ground until the 1 April - it's always been an issue, but has never really affected whether or not players come. When the competition starts before that date, grade always have played their games away and colts at Keirle Park. The result of a poor deal done years ago whereby cricket get the ground from 1 September to 31 March (7 months) and rugby get it from 1 April to 31 August. Cricket won't change and Manly Council won't push it unless both codes agree.

The Manly Oval situation has been made worse recently by a megalomaniac mayor who spent months digging it up to put in storm water tanks and will shortly dig it up again to put in a $27,000,000 underground car park. Work will start as soon as the $13,000,000 swimming pool that she's building is finished.

The canteen/barbeque at Keirle Park is run by Manly Roos juniors. A couple of telephone calls could probably have seen it in operation for colts matches.

The golf club did well out of the colts supporters at rat park ! Would have been better to be on the main field and the club get our cash !!

There was a 0-28 score recorded against MMM Colts 3 in round 2 against the M2B. There are no player names recorded on that team sheet on the NSW Rugby web site. 28-0 is the usual score that is recorded for a forfeit, and the absence of any team sheets reinforces that.

Not a good sign for a proud club that usually has robust player numbers in the Colts programme. IIRC the MMM were in the 2014 GF in Colts 2&3 losing both by very skinny margins.
