1 more week of trials/pre-season before round 1.

Time to fess up. Who has got what. Based on banter above.

Eastern Suburbs: Has 3 Colts Teams. Not sure about U18. Beaten by Wicks in trial in all grades on 7 March. Played the Shoremen on 28 Feb (results unknown).

Eastwood: Has 3 Colts teams. Not sure about U18. Played trial vs Penrith on 28 Feb (Results unknown). Lost 1's and 2's and drew? with Uni in a trial last weekend. Trial planned against Pirates this weekend.

Gordon: Has 3 Colts teams. Not sure about U18. All 3 teams beat Warringah in a trial.

Manly: Has 3 Colts teams. Not sure about U18 but should be able to rustle up the numbers. Trial hitout last weekend against against Pirates (unknown result) & against Wicks this weekend.

Northern Suburbs: Claims they will be a little skinny on numbers for 3 teams. Not sure about U18. Trial vs Beasts on 28 Feb (no details on scores or teams). Didn't seem to have a Colts 3 for trial vs Hobbits when a combined 2/3 team played Hobbits Colts 2's. Early days?

Parramatta: Has 3 Colts teams. Enough players for 2 x U18. Lost to Wicks in trial in all grades. Trial vs Hobbits this weekend.

Penrith: Has 3 Colts teams, one of which may be U18. Colts 1 lost to ACT Royals Colts in a trial. 3 Colts teams were rostered for a trial vs Woodies on 28 Feb (results unknown).

Randwick: Has 3 Colts teams and an U18. Beat Mighty 2 Blues in all grades in Feb trial and Easts in all grades last weekend. Playing Mighty Manly Marlins in a trial this weekend.

Southern Districts: Has 3 Colts teams and an U18. Colts 1 beat Norths, Colts 2 lost to Norths. Colts 3 + 4th Grade lost to Norths 4th grade. Playing Mighty 2 Blues this weekend.

Sydney University: Has 3 Colts team. Claim to have an U18. Played Woodies for wins in 1's, 2's and draw ? in 3's. Playing Canberra Vikings in Kiama this weekend.

West Harbour: Has 3 Colts teams. Not sure about U18. Pre-season camp and trial in Orange vs Orange City. Trial hitout last weekend against against MMM (unknown result) & against Woodies this weekend.

Warringah: Claims that they may be skinny in numbers for 3 teams. Not sure about U18. Played Gordon in a trial last weekend (unknown results).

Not sure who is foxing or not.
All Clubs seem to have 3 Colts teams and there is still no bye in the comp draw.
Some club websites do not yield much information about what is happening, or has happened so far.

Under 18 Competition update:
According to the Uni website (http://www.sydneyunirugby.com.au/under-18s.html), the U18 competition games will be played before the Colts3 games, and will only run until the long weekend (11 rounds) with the GF to be played in conjunction with the NSWJRU State Champs.

Seems that Southern Districts, Randwick, Penrith (possibly their Colts 3 team), Parramatta (2) and Sydney University, Manly will be fielding U18 teams.
Other districts are TBC.

- Colts 3 draw very even,
- Colts 2 Sydney Uni won well,
- Colts 1 missed

norths v easts, played 2 games (combined 2\3 and ones), norths won 2\3 easily, ones tougher , I think 4 tries to 2, but not 100%, easts had a player sent off.
Norths will field 3 teams, but will be skinny for the first few rounds until injured players return, but hey do need probably another 6-10 players to ensure further injuries don't have a major impact.

^^^ I'm pretty sure that a "game" is played if there are >12 players from both teams, although unlike some of the junior grades (SJRU) there is no need in Colts to match player numbers down if the opposition do not have a full squad.

Playing with 12 players and getting flogged would probably be preferable to having a forfeit recorded, lose 2 or 4 competition points and a get slapped with a $500 fine.

This weekend The Corp heads to Kiama for Trials. Note that Uni Colts only have the 1st Grade team a certainty to play. Not sure what is being cobbled together for 2nd Colts but TBA at this point. They will have it sorted by the end of training tonight. Long way to travel to look at the Ocean.

3:30pm - 2nd Grade vs. Tuggeranong Vikings
1:05pm - 1st Colts vs. Tuggeranong Vikings
11:45am - 4th Grade vs. Kiama
No. 2 Field
2:30pm - 2nd Colts vs. TBA
1:05pm - 3rd Grade vs. Illawarra Opens Rep Squad

And there's a new hooker line-out throwing box on the top oval.

That would be it in the background of this image below (sourced from the latest Woodies members' newsletter: http://www.eastwoodrugby.com.au/civicrm/mailing/view?reset=1&id=247)

Rumour is Warringah is struggling to field 3 colts sides as well?

Unfortunately for the Rats, they seem to be losing alot of their juniors to the Marlins. In the insular peninsula I'm sure it has worked both ways over the years. That combined with a stronger subbies presence in their district seems to be taking its toll this year. The unfortunate scenario faced by premier club rugby at Colts level is the wide disparity between the haves and the have nots. Not much fun being a young Rat being flogged by the likes of Randwick or Uni in any grade when you could have more fun playing for Newport or Wakehurst and not being expected to train like a demon for the benefit.

Re your point above Gordon have also been on the end of players heading to subbies over the last few seasons.

I can't see the sense in having an U21 sub district colts competition, making it U19 would surely allow the appropriate flow on of players to the grade colts competition?

^^^ Not everyone wants to make it to Shute Shield Colts. Plenty of young men just want to run around a park like they did for Spaghetti Cup at School and play rugby as a recreational activity with their mates.

Work, study, and other lifestyle choices prevent many from committing the necessary time to give Shute Shield Colts a go.

Perhaps consideration should be given to making it easier for players to transition from subdistrict level to Shute Shield level (and vice versa) during a season, but many clubs guard their independence fiercely and would not be too keen to lose their better players to Shute Shield Colts for a game or three in the middle of the season.

A Student team is playing in the Laffan Cup at UWS, Hawkesbury Campus

The Laffan Cup seems to be a tournament involving UWS Hawkesbury, Uni-Norths from ACT, Macquarie University, UNSW, Newcastle University, Sydney University, and Wollongong University according to twitter.

"Saturday 14 March 2015 HAC will be hosting the Laffan Cup at the Hawkesbury Campus. This is the largest 15 a side Rugby tournament in Australia for University Clubs. It is also a selection tournament for the Australian University Rugby Team."

Slightly off thread topic, but do they still run an Australian University Rugby Team? Who do they play? Is there a World Uni Games competition?
There would be some seriously talented athletes in that team if they could choose from all University Students nationwide and not just those who are at the trial at Hawkesbury on the weekend, but somehow I just can't see the various U20's, academies and Super Rugby squads and WTG releasing their cattle for this team.

Is this University based or University Rugby Club based? F'r'instance, is a player from Northern Suburbs Club but studying at Sydney University eligible to represent Sydney Uni, or what about a young man from St Andrews College at Sydney University who is playing Subbies footy for UNSW Rugby Club, and does a young man studying at UNSW (or UTS, or ACU) but playing club footy with The Corporation have to play for UNSW or are they Sydney University eligible because of the "University Rugby Club" they belong to?

Would the selectors consider a talented young footballer who is a student at a smallish private University such as Notre Dame, or one of the other niche campuses that are around Sydney CBD, that doesn't have a footy club?

My son goes to UTS and plays Parra Colts. He was certainly eligible to play in the Uni Games. I'm sure it's the same with other institutions.
