Southern Districts Reports - Round 10

Finally a home game at Forshaw. It was a good sunny day with a strong wind blowing straight down the field, which was going to add that little bit of extra twist to the days games.

The 18s kicked of the morning with a strong win over Gordon at Boronia Park, Chatswood. The scoreline of 24 to 19 reflects the closeness of the game. Well done to the boys on continuing their unbeaten run, and well done to Cooper Harris on his 4 tries, but I am sure his team mates will say he had the easy bit and they did all the hard work.

The Colts guys had trained well during the week and knew the importance of the days games with all sides in battles with Eastwood to stay in the semi final race.

3rds for once had a settled side and took to the field confident they had done the work during the week. Running against the breeze, started the best they have all year with Tylah Pritchard scoring a nice try with one of his renowned power runs and duly converted, a nice start to the game.

Slowly, slowly Eastwood worked their way back into the game. The Souths boys started to give away penalties and make errors at crucial times. Eastwood scored the next 10 points which was looking like a winning score, but with minutes to go Khalid crashed over for a converted try to put Souths in the lead.
Eastwood threw everything at Souths in the last couple of minutes but couldn't get the try they needed. Souths were 14 to 10 victors. Not pretty, but a gutsy win. We were more than happy to take the 4 competition points.

2nds ran out to take advantage of running with the wind and needed to be at least 14 points in front at halftime. The pressure of this seemed to play on their minds as they had a very mixed first 35 minutes.

Souths were very unlucky not to have scored a couple of times in the first few minutes, but a lot of poor running lines, running across field, dropped ball and turn-overs, they were making the game very difficult for themselves. Eastwood were able to take advantage of our inaccuracies, and a try to them of a Souths dropped ball summed up the 1st half performance.

The 2nd half wasn't much better with the team starting to play more as 15 individuals. Our forwards making too many hit ups and clogging up the backline, backs running with little purpose and across field. Finally a very simple hands across the backline after some quick recycling of the ball, put winger Tom Evans over the line for a really nice Rugby try. Unfortunately, It wasn't enough with Eastwood winning 15 to 5 with our 2nds in real danger of missing the finals.

1sts had the advantage of running with the wind and needed to start well and play with high intensity in defence. Eastwood are a big forward pack and the scrum was going to play a major part of the game, with Rahboni out injured we lost that extra bit of grunt, but the Souths scrum had the Eastwood scrum buckling under pressure all game. This allowed our backs to work off some good ball and after 20 minutes we had scored 3 good tries and were looking comfortable in attack and defense, but there were signs of concern at the breakdown and we were starting to make too many handling errors.

Eastwood took advantage of this and scored a nice try and kicked a penalty goal. We responded with the bonus point 4th try and a 24 to 8 half time lead which was a fair indication of the game, but Eastwood now had the wind advantage.

Eastwood posted 2 tries in the 1st 8 minutes as the handling errors of the 1st half continued. We were not dealing with running into the wind and didn't know whether to kick or run.

At 24 to 22 Souths way and with 30 minutes to play, Eastwood had all the momentum and if you were placing a bet, Eastwood were red hot favourites. Ticker, spirit and pride in their jersey is something the Souths boys have in bucket loads. It was a case of playing tough and a try to us helped extend our lead 29 to 22, however we really needed another score. Eastwood showed their determination and it really was playing for sheep stations stuff by both sides. Eastwood were next to score and at 29 all with 10 to go it was keep chewing the finger nails stuff.

Finally, after 4 tough weeks the Rugby Gods smiled on us as William Latu was able to power his way over in the corner with only a few minutes left on the clock. Eastwood had one last charge camped on our line, with our supporters finger nails starting to bleed from being chewed to the first knuckle, a turn-over had the game won.

Well done to both clubs the days games were played in great spirit and we get to do it all again in 3 weeks at TG Milner.

Player of the day goes to all the injured players whom made their return to the playing field. Welcome back!

Stan Wickham (3)
The game I watched saw Randwicks scrum all over the Norths scrum. A few great tight heads included.

have to agree a few tight heads were obtained mainly in the second half but most of the scrums the number nine was under pressure get in the ball out

I'd be very surprised if the Wix #9 (Mitch Short) struggled to get the ball away from a scrum under pressure.

Insight

Stan Wickham (3)
Randwick number nine which I must say is a very talented player he handled it very well most other players in the same position in the current colt competition would not have been able to feed their back line as effectively as he did which resulting in them getting the upper hand.

Gee I thought that the Randwick scrum was more than solid considering the front row comprised of three hookers. And yes, Short provides brilliant service to his backline.

if they had three Hookers upfront they did extremely well, that would properly explained the few great tight heads.

In terms of colts eligibility Gordon have had a few players play a bit of grade :

Sam Tabuatamata - think he has played the last three rounds in 2nd grade
Luke Papworth - has played the whole season in 1st/2nd grade
James Wilkinson - Has played the last 3 games in 1st/2nd grade
Pat Curtin - Has played the whole season in 2nd grade.

Nathan Kelly, Sean Dillon, Hosea Fotukava have all had 2nd grade starts due to the massive front row injury problems in grade.

A few others got bench runs against Warringah when 3rd grade had to play at a different ground.

I would personally be trying to get both Fotukava and Wilkinson eligible for Colts finals so when someone comes back into grade Fraser,Lawley, Cropley they might try get them into hooker and rotate those two guys in 2nd grade.

I think Tabuatamata will also spend some time back in Colts as well. Papworth/Curtin are looking unlikely.

Ben Faatau is meant to be running out in Colts he has played some 2nd grade games earlier in the season.

some interesting games this week:
manly v rats - manly by plenty, rats have been horrible
woods v norths - norths to bounce back after their trouncing, but I think this will be close
Gordon v wicks - wicks by plenty - gordon have been good, but wicks are a step above all
parra v uni - uni by plenty - say no more
wests v souths - souths but again a tight one. If the sths 8 is shut down, wests will take this out, but a tough assignment.

Tipped 3/5 with a couple of margins spot on. Easts continue to perform against my tips, although the tip for the M2B was predicated in the game being played in the slop on Woollahra 1. Snouts tell me that it was played on the better draining Woollahra 3, so I can claim a moral tipping victory as I did say that they should win. What about the Randi-Wix? I said it would be a Titanic battle and it was. The battle didn't end up being between Titans, but it was Titanic none the less. Just like the Battle between the RMS Titanic and The Iceberg!!!

Round 11 Tips
It'll be a clean sweep for the visitors.

Warringah v Manly. After the Christian's individually put 45 points on the Rats, I'd expecting Austin Osagie to bag a 4 pack of meat pies with Morgan Thomas banging over 7 conversions. While their form has been a bit so so this year the MMM hate the Green Slime with a passion so they will lift for this match and take the chocolates by > 47.

Eastwood v Northern Suburbs. The Shoremen are still without classy #10 Jack Clancy so this game will probably be a lot closer than it would ordinarily be. Ed Craig led a good rally from the Woodies last week to come within cooee of beating the Hobbits in the Shire and that is usually no easy task. Even without Classy Clancy, the Shoremen should win comfortably by > 12.

Gordon v Randwick. Most times I call "Match of the Round", "Battle of the Titans", I am rewarded with a big custard pie to the computer screen as the tipping Gods remind us who is all knowing, and it often isn't this little black duck. This might be match of the round and the Chatswood mob will be well rested after the Bye last week. By all accounts the Randi-Wix will be fairly rested as well apart from their Kicking Tee runner who was as busy as a Baghdad brickie last weekend. Expect the Chatswood faithful to give a hearty and rousing welcome back to all their former Juniors that are now based out of Coogee Oval. The loose forward battle will be just like a Gordon Under 15's Rep team try out from 2011. Matt Crofts impressive 11 meat pie collection will be extended, but only by two as the Wix show the Gay Gordons who is boss when they claim victory by 15+.

Parramatta v Sydney University. With the Christian's on 11 tries each, and 4 behind MMM's Austin Osagie on the leaderboard, I can see the Christian's giving the Two Blues the blues as The Corporation run riot out at Merrylands RSL Park. BuildCorp by > 40.

The Bye v Eastern Suburbs. Beasties have been a nightmare to tip this season, but I can see them being crusing home against The Bye by 28 points, with a 4T BP.

West Harbour v Southern Districts. The Hobbits are still missing a few first choice players, but with Frank the Tank Calugay bashing it up straight and hard in the centres off wide quick ball from Rory Davies who will be uncharacteristically playing at 10, the Hobbits should get enough meat to open a butcher shop. Superior conditioning from the shoeless Shire boys will see them victorious at Concord by 15-20.

Eric Spilsted Shield (Colts Club Championship) Watch:
There has been some minor positional adjustments in the middle of the 2015 table, and this is not entirely accurate because 4 teams have had one round postponed, which will be played over the June Long Weekend.

On current form Northern Suburbs, should be able to gather enough points from the deferred round to pass Gordon and move into 3rd place, and Parramatta is likely to do similar and move past West Harbour after their deferred matches against Warringah have been played.

To some, Gordon are the surprise package for 2015 with some shrewd recruiting in the off season, attracting many former players from Junior Village Clubs in the Gordon footprint, building on the foundation of their very young colts teams from 2014.

There are a maximum of 55 points available to a club each week, based on all 3 colts teams winning with a 4 try BP.

Randwick, 514 points
Sydney University, 490 points
Gordon, 428 points
Northern Suburbs, 400 points*
Eastwood, 272 points
Eastern Suburbs, 263 points
Southern Districts, 259 points
Manly, 206 points*
West Harbour, 177 points
Parramatta, 157 points*
Penrith, 68 points

Southern Districts Reports - Round 10

Eastwood Club's take on the Southern v Eastwood round 10.

Round 10 - Match Reports
Eastwood v Southern – Forshaw Park

Southern 34 def Eastwood 29

The game that we definitely let get away from us.

Who was the better team on the day would be debated. A game of two halves in which we paid dearly from our own mistakes in the first half. Silly mistakes, forcing the pass and trying way too hard.

Southern Districts did the little things right and particularly their urgency at the breakdown put pressure on the Woodies causing us to make basic mistakes.

The need to learn from these early mistakes was the order of the day. The halftime score did not reflect how close the match was placed. Our poor execution allowed the opposition to have a lead at halftime of 24 to 5. We weren't playing that badly but the opposition had pounced on our mistakes and made us pay dearly.

We realised at halftime the need to play to our strengths and maintain possession of the ball. In real terms - stop forcing the pass and chancing our arm with fifty fifty passes.

As a team we played a good solid half of rugby responding to the coaches challenges spoken about at halftime. The only blemish of the half being the loss of Matthew Bartholomew at inside centre with injury for an extended period of time.

The Woodies began to gain ascendency with points accumulating, to the degree that at the 27th minute mark of the second half we had drawn level.

Southern Districts scored out wide soon after the Woodies relaxed for just a few minutes. For the next ten minutes we were camped inside the opposition's 22. Opportunities went begging. We weren't able to capitalise on missed chances. Definitely a match that got away.

A match in which when we review it at training on Monday will need to look at how we start matches. We gave the opposition to much of a head start. We scored on the 22 minute mark of the match. Our urgency just wasn't there in the first half. We went through the motions.

We are definitely a better team than that as we witnessed our performance in the second half. Cut out the forced passes and 50/50s and we do gain momentum. Back to basics this week gents.

Not our choice, defending our try line…successfully for the first 10 minutes of the match. This proved to be vital as the match unfolded into a contest between forward hit ups, as he side tried to find a way through.

Good signs from 2nds, just before the break, as they applied pressure to South’s, who spilled the ball for replacement back Tom Graham to bounce on and side step his way over South’s line.

Further Wood’s points resulted again from applying pressure with South’s in possession. From a South’s lineout, Nick Reid pilfered and allowed Jordan Gillespie set in motion our #10, Lachlan Croese. Whilst presenting the ball, Lachlan dashed around South’s defensive line to score out wide.

Whilst South’s were soon to counter, their sole try was their points for the day, although 2 kicks at goal hit the points. After earlier disappointments in the season, about time that game luck came Woods way.

Given the stronger effort 2nds displayed around the paddock, 2nds left Forshaw with the points, well deserved.

Special Congratulations, to Lachlan Croese, 10 points for the day.

This was a close tussle that could have gone either way.

With the pre match discussion emphasising the importance of catching the kickoff cleanly, we dropped the ball and placed ourselves under pressure for the next 10 minutes. This ultimately led to Southern's first try from a backline move near our line where a simple switch move resulted in the outside centre scoring untouched under the posts.

When we finally got some ball in good field position we made some good ground particularly around the edges of the ruck and out wide. We were rewarded with a good try to a Jonas dart from the base of the ruck, following some good forward play.

In the second half we hit the lead with a great C ball to Cam Goodacre who ran 35m to score. At 10-7 up we lost our first player to the bin for repeated infringements followed 5 mins later by a second player to the bin. On the back of a host of penalties Southern scored a questionably try with 3 mins to go.

To our credit we had a real lash for the remainder of the game with Denzel getting over but held up (?) and a couple of opportunities to score that we didn’t take.

Cam Goodacre 3, Tom Graham 2, Daniel Ryan 1.

Eastwood v Norths

Preview for Round 11

Colts 3 - 5th Place

Colts 3 hold onto 5th place despite their narrow 10 – 14 loss to Southern Districts earning a critical bonus point. Teams are building up behind with five teams six or less points behind and a loss against fourth placed Norths could see them drop down the ladder depending on who wins this weekend.

Norths have lost three of their last four games all against the three teams above them on the ladder.

They beat Southern Districts 21 – 12 and are yet to play Manly. Eastwood after winning four in a row have now lost their last three and will have to lift their performance if they are take the points from Northern Suburbs.

With Manly and Eastern Suburbs expected to win and West Harbour taking on Southern Districts the race for fifth and sixth it hotting up and makes it more important for Eastwood to earn points from their game against Norths.

Colts 2 - 6th Place

Colts 2 made it two from two with a 15 – 5 win over Southern Districts moving them up one place on the ladder just one point ahead of West Harbour and Southern Districts who play each other this Saturday.

A further three points behind is Penrith who had their first loss in three weeks when they came up against the strong Gordon side.

For this important clash Aiden Hopping moves from the Wing to Full Back replacing the promoted James Day. His place on the Wing is taken by Tom Graham from Colts 3.

Northern Suburbs are having a successful season with just the one loss (to University) which sees them in third place and will be hard to beat.

Eastwood will know they have a tough assignment but will give it their best effort and see what they can do to upset Northern Suburbs game structure and limit their scoring opportunities.

Colts 1 - 6th Place

Eastwood showed some ticker as they fought back after falling behind Southern Districts last week but came up just short, going down 29 – 34. The loss saw them drop back to 6th place on equal points with Souths and with Eastern Suburbs one point and Manly four points further back.

With Eastern Suburbs getting five points from the bye and Manly expected to beat Warringah the pressure is on to take points from the Northern Suburbs game this weekend. Northern Suburbs are going to be a tough nut to crack sitting in third place with the loss to Randwick last Saturday the only blot on their result sheet.

Matthew Bartholomew is out for this vital clash and Joshua Nohra moves from Full Back to Centre with James Day coming up from Colts 2 to play Full Back. Eastwood have shown they have the ability to match it with the better sides but need to start from the kick off and play for the full 80 minutes.

They can't give Norths the chance to get into their rhythm or let them get on top early.

A tough weekend for all three Colts sides this weekend at Millner but Eastwood will be up for it and Northern Suburbs will know they have been in a game of rugby.

^^^^^^ Wot he said..
Looks like an easy round for tips.
So probably some upsets coming in this round?

Yep - agreed. Too easy.

Hate to break it to you: Eastwood 1s Colts 31 def Norths 17.
(Finally, Eastwood played to their potential for the full 80 mins.)
