And the frustrating thing was that Gordon led in the Firsts for all but the last few minutes.
But the "really" frustrating thing, was that the last Woody try was scored 1 metre over the dead ball line. Chatswood Oval doesn't have a "marked" dead ball line, and only uses those "barber posts". The confusing thing is that there is a curved line running from those posts and follows the fenceline, pretty hard to make a decision - although the touchie made a valiant attempt to point this out to the ref
The curved dead ball line is a feature of Chatswood oval - and should be exploited at every opportunity :p

Also a feature at Merrylands RSL Club Rugby Park. Having played, coached and supported Rugby for over 48 years I can say that, while not common, such an arrangement is not as rare as hens teeth and in any event most coaches and senior players would walk the ground to check for angles etc. Well, in my time anyway.

It is what it is

SCG No 2 was probably one of the first to have the deep curved dead ball line.

No doubt HJ will have this start in a graph. It is thought based on commentary it is improving and it would be as declining line.

HJ let's see how you go.

Congrats to James "Wilko" Wilkinson who has made the Combined States team for the National Championships whilst playing for Gordon 1s/2s colts over the season. Im sure those 1-2 hour train trips 3 times a week from Gosford to Chatswood have certainly paid off!

There are a number of kids (young men) selected in the various teams for National Schoolboys that are playing or have turned out for Colts this year. At least two of the names below actually played a game for Colts on Saturday. A third may have played but their Clubs team sheet is not up on the website yet so this cant be confirmed.

I'm hoping to get time to do the full run through tomorrow but from memory the following names spring to mind that I have seen on one or more Colts Team Sheets this year that have been selected to attend Schoolboys National Champs:

Andrew Vatuvei, Parramatta - NSW I
Angus Crichton, Easts - NSW I
Ed Craig, Eastwood - NSW I
Tobias Rudulf, Randwick - NSW I
Declan Moore, Sydney University - NSW II
Matt Serhon, Randwick - NSW II
William Finley, Norths - NSW II
James Wilkinson, Gordon - Combined States

The other thing to note about Wilko, in addition to what @GPS Row has posted above, is that he has been selected from the CCC Association Team. Not too many get the tap on the shoulder from CCC, so well done him.

There were also a fair few more from Colts that were in one or other of the School Association Representative teams at the NSW Schoolboy trials last week.

It's good to see a good spread of boys in there from most of the clubs in the comp.

HJ et al - Are these numbers normal?

It would appear to me that if all these blokes turned up on the same day we'd have about 300 players not getting a run!

Surely ...They can't be all injured!

I know a lot of my lads are commitment phobic but is this a Sydney wide phenomena?

Hugh Jarse

Rocky Elsom (76)
@Cattledog,

If all the players that had played at least one game of colts (that is what the Jarsometer counts for the "Players used" count for each club) then we would be able to run 4 grades of colts easily.

I make that assessment based on the following:
4 x 15 = 60 players + 8 reserves on the bench (fresh bench for 4ths and players backing up from lower grades for the others)+ 10 in Team Rehab (15% (of 68 ) allowance for injuries) = 78 players needed for 4 Colts.

Clearly some clubs have more than 15% of their players in Team rehab, or a graduated return to play programme. Some kids just aren't prepared to commit, or have jobs, study, other social or recreational activities or hangovers that get in the way.

These figures show that Norths kids must be very committed (and uninjured) as they manage to put out 3 teams each week, with two of them very competitive, on the second lowest head count of all the clubs.

I can't make a judgement if the figures are normal or not. This is the first year that I have run the sign on sheets through the Jarsometer for more than the first three rounds, so I have no real historical basis of evidence to compare these figures with.

It's too quiet:

West Harbour v Sydney University. University by lots.

Northern Suburbs v Gordon . Shoreman by similar.

Warringah v Penrith. Rats by 15-20

Eastwood v Randwick. Game of the round. Woodies to come from behind and win by <5.

Manly v Eastern Suburbs. MMM at home will be too good, too proud. Marlins by 8.

Southern Districts v Parramatta. There will be some ginger in this game with some scores to settle from the early clash. Hobbits to win by 5-10 points after a seesaw arm wrestle.

Colts 2 Emus 26 def Rats 14
Colts 1 Rats 56 def Emus 7

'twas a good day with much socialising from both clubs. The day ended with the fellas having a beverage at the conclusion of the colts games before settling in to watch emus go down 46 - 31 (I think?) to the rats in the SS First grade fixture.
