Whilst I don't agree with the behaviour of the Gordon coaching staff the NSWRRA needs to seriously look at the bloke they appointed to referee 1st grade colts. He is seriously incapable and not of the usual high standard that you come to expect in 1st grade colts (rotated out higher grade refs that are part of the top panel). I would suggest this is a matter of experience and coaching.

You do notice sometimes the fact that due to Uni being near the top and Gordon down the bottom they believe it provides a good chance for a young referee to be blooded who was clearly out of his depth.

Matter of fact is 1st grade colts is 1st grade colts you need the best referees refereeing 1st,2nd grade and 1st grade colts.

Usually you can see the difference between the different grade referees and the level they are refereeing especially higher grades.

I like to watch

David Codey (61)
Where do you find all these great referees?
They can only use the cattle they have on hand.
Wait till School Rugby starts and they start appointing the better refs to high profile School games.

I agree the standard of the refs is sometimes lacking, but what do you do?
They are doing their best.

^^^^. Spot on ILTW.

Volunteer for the next referee course if you can do better than the useless mongrel bastards that are currently wielding the Acme Thunderer at the games you watch.

Maybe you can't do better due to a physical issue. These young men have the energy and speed of an Irish Setter pup and it is rather difficult for men of a certain age to keep up with them.
If you can manage an hour or two to run around in the lower grades or the Under 10's etc, then this will free up other referees to undergo training and development to become better referees for the glamour games in Colts 1 and Grade 1's and 2's.

The Matthew Burke philosophy applies. If you can't do any better, then probably best to not criticise.

It is a bloody thankless task and we need to treasure them all. They are a limited resource and there is no game without them.

It is good to see that clubs in the Colts 3's with the bye are arranging to play the other club with the bye instead of having 30 kids miss out on footy for the weekend.
Further to that the Woodies and Two Blues played a 4th Grade Colts. That was great to see.

Hugh Jarse

Rocky Elsom (76)
Most clubs would go close to managing a 4ths Colts game most weeks.

4 x 15 = 60 players + 8 reserves on the bench (fresh for 4ths and players backing up from lower grades for the others)+ 10 in Team Rehab (15% (of 68 )allowance for injuries) = 78 players needed for 4 Colts.

As of round 6, 6 Clubs had rolled out a playing roster of more than 70 players.

Play a shortened version of the game if the 4ths don't have enough numbers - 10 aside or 12 aside.

Great initiative of Woodies and the Mighty Two Blues. Should be more of it.

Rugby isn't just about the glamourous rock stars in Colts 1, 1st Grade and Soup Rugby.

HJ I actually did referee at first grade level over a decade ago.

I hear all not rosy at the woodies colts

Care to elaborate or just satisfied to spread unsubstantiated rumours.

As someone has observed earlier, the Woodies on field performance so far seems to support the notion that they are doing something right.

They're second on the Colts Club Championship ladder.

They have at least 69 players on their books, so they seem to be able to attract young men that want to be part of the Woodies culture.

HJ there is a young hooker Glasson who i rate highly, but have not seen him on the team sheets - injured? away? recruited elsewhere? surely not league?

He could still be at School.

Is he "top age" for Year 1996, and therefore left School earlier than the rest of his cohort? Some, like the Clancey boys, and Kaplan and Crearer from Marlins, fit that description.

While he played some junior footy for Hillview (Woodies patch), I had him as being locked up in School Rugby this year and was fully expecting to see him in contention for a AAGPS and a possible State guernsey.
Unlike some of the Schools that either knowingly encourage kids to do a Colts preseason, or turn a blind eye to their kids moonlighting in Colts, Joeys tends to keep their boys under wraps for the AAGPS rugby programme.

In the early rounds, there were a number of Private Schoolboys moonlighting in Colts (some AAGPS), but since CAS competition has started that number has dropped off to almost nil, although there is still one Scots lad listed in Firsts Colts for "Scots College Old Boys". There are still a few CHS boys and non-rugby Private School lads (CCC and AICES) from 1996 on the Colts team lists.

Thank you Wreckless for the shoutout!

Fellas, I've embarked on the Gordon Rugby Colts this year as the tartan needs to grow and has done so quite well.

Such a shame that the likes of Joey, Tanne and Tepai did not stay with God's game but oh well.

Unfortunate to see a lack of boys returning to play this year from Newington. But nonetheless atleast there is some!

Gordon Highlanders

I'll keep it short and sweet with this one but Gordon has done surprisingly well to recruit such a good group of lads from all over Sydney, the central coast and even interstate. This year with a tough comp and strong numbers by other clubs sees Gordon having to fight each week for a win. Luckily by round 6, the boys all know each well now and luckily, injury and discipline haven't got in the way of a solid turnaround for the Gordon Colts. All they need now is a win!

GPS schools 1st XV/2nd XV/3rd XV boys in Gordon Colts

Alex Barker - Riverview 1st XV 2013
Nathan Kelly - Riverview 1st XV 2013
Josh Mitchell - Newington 1st/2nd XV 2013
Luke Gardner - Newington 1st/2nd XV 2012
Will Makeig - Newington 2nd/3rd XV 2013
Ruben Mackellar - Newington 3rd XV 2013
Angus McCelland - Kings 2nd XV 2013
Oliver Bird - Kings 3rd XV 2013
Lucas Bitmann - Kings 2nd/3rd XV 2013
Lachlan Kamp - Kings 2nd XV 2012
Isaiah Enriquez - Scots 2nd XV 2013
Samuel Tabua - Scots 1st/2nd XV 2013
Jack Robertson - Shore 1st XV 2013
Andrew Bligh - Joeys 2nd XV 2013
Sean Fagan - Joeys 3rd XV 2013
Pat Sutton - Joeys 3rd XV 2013
William Lee - Grammar 1st XV 2012/2013

Now isn't that interesting, I think it would have to be the only club in the competition dawning 6/7 GPS schools with players from it?

The rest of the Gordon Mix come from the country, Knox/Barker, central coast and locally.

How's me old mate Andrew Lennon fitting in to the coaches role?

Hugh Jarse

Rocky Elsom (76)
yep, that would keep you out of footy for a while.

When he returns from injury, he'd be as keen for some footy action as a buck is for another kind of action during the annual rutting season.
