Decided Hooper isn't doing it anymore? Young forward Bird back in. Side is much more back to regular programming which makes sense only a couple of months from the Olympics.

Wouldn't blame either side for making the call. Must be a hard transition to 7s in your 30s.

Hooper is injured. Was always going to be a struggle at 32 and playing an explosive game like sevens.

Don't like his chances of getting in for Olympics now unless he gets picked for the "good bloke / experience" factor. Also depends if they want to bring in any of Toole / Ryan / Lancaster etc

I'd call it if I were the coach personally. Don't need any distractions or as few as possible leading into the Olympics.

I reckon Lancaster, Toole and even Pietsch are good chances but Ryan may be further away given he hasn't played with them before. Such a specialist sport now I don't think you can just throw a guy in even with his attributes. This team is weakest through the forwards if anything so more backs doesn't do much.

Close at half time in the Men's bronze match. Fiji looking good in Madrid (after just being tipped out by France in the semi) with veteran Jerry Tuwai back for a swan song tilt at the Olympics. :D

Considering they were missing ALF, Sharni, Demi, Madison Ashby and Lily Dick, it's a monster effort. Really only 8 or 9 of the squad saw big mins in big matches.

From the press release

Meanwhile the highest Gilbert try scorer of the series goes to Australia’s Maddison Levi with a record-breaking 65 tries in what is her third season of the HSBC SVNS Series and at only 22 years old. This is the second year running for Levi who broke her own record last year of 57 tries.

Just watching the women's semi final now against NZ. How good was that solo effort from Faith Nathan on the stroke of half time.

Granted I spent the weekend with only patchy internet & no Sky but I found Madrid a bit unnecessary, really. I mean, France won the men's but so what? Doesn't make them World Champions IMO. I get the distinct feeling that Madrid was originally going to comprise just the Series bottom four & Challenger top four but then WR (World Rugby) decided to tack on a Top eight comp for... reasons, probably money.
