This just came through:

SANZAR UNVEILS NEW SUPER RUGBY TROPHY

The new trophy that will be presented to the inaugural Super Rugby champions on 9 July, 2011 has been unveiled by SANZAR.

The trophy is made from solid stainless steel, stands 65 cm tall, weighs 18 kilograms and will be the symbol of Super Rugby success from 2011 and beyond.

The trophy design is inspired by the core elements of rugby - tradition, physical toughness, camaraderie and skill.

The trophy was designed by leading Sydney-based consultancy, Blue Sky, and manufactured by Box & Dice, a specialised prototype and production company, also based in Sydney. The two companies have worked on a number of multi-award winning design projects, amongst them the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch.

“The shape of the trophy is cantered around three curved legs, each representing the Conferences involved in the Super Rugby competition,” said SANZAR CEO, Greg Peters.

“Bold colours on each leg correspond to the Conferences with gold for Australia, black for New Zealand, and green for the South African Conference.

“The legs of the trophy reach upward referencing the arms of players in a line-out, and the legs also create the shape of a rugby ball in the centre of the trophy. A new feature is the incorporation of the SANZAR logo under the base of the trophy.

The Super Rugby champions’ trophy is the focal element of a ‘family’ of silverware produced for the Super Rugby competition.

“Already, the respective Conference winners – the Reds (Australia), Stormers (SA) and Crusaders (NZ) have been presented with similar, scaled-down trophies for their achievements during the regular season,” Peters said.

“The champions trophy is the ‘big one’, and will become the ultimate symbol of Super Rugby supremacy in the years to come”.

The trophy was made using the latest materials and manufacturing processes, with the respective components cast in solid stainless steel before being polished to a mirror finish.

Where do you pour the beer into? What point is there in having a rugby trophy you can't drink from?

At 18kg and made from stainless steel it should be able to withstand even the most rambunctious of celebrations though.

It looks like some work-in-progress artefact that may have started life in the props department of Transformers 3.

The top bit is hollow, saw a pic of it on the Rugby club intro.

they could have atleast made the individual conferance ones interesting too.

....I suppose they're waiting for the curry cup and ITM cup to be integrated into the comp....

It's a bit annoying that they have to change the trophy every time they expand the competition...

I'm with Tiger. I like it.

At the end of the day though, all I really want to see is Jimmy H holding it up high next Saturday. It could be a bent bumper bar for all I care; if James has hold of it, it means my team are the champs....

i'm with RF - lazy

emblazoned with their already horrible/boring logo and the stupid SupeRugby thing.

i don't like a cup style trophy that the majority of it is curved legs. make the important part bigger and not so much like a spaceship.

i don't think i like the yellow/green/black leg colors either. might as well be a tri-nations trophy. as many discussed (not so pleasantly) in the "tahs fans would you root for the reds" thread, it's a provincial competition. pick different colors for once.

RF - it's uni holidays at the moment - why don't you have a crack at designing a trophy? Would love to see it, even if just a rough draft.
