Super Rugby Round 4: Rebels v Shorks, Ballarat

He's fucking awful in contact and his passing is no more than you'd expect at this level. Hardly "elite". Doesn't really run a game.

But he's a kid, and a fullback first, so he has time to get better at 10 if he's allowed.

What did you think of that counter-attack?

Shhhh...

Pass that was a mile forward try and the one before that was short try. Why bother having a TMO if they can’t get these simple things right?

TMO didn't hit a guy without the ball.
TMO didn't stand still at a scrum and get munted.
TMO didn't throw it out wide before going forward.

Well, that Mapimpi/Bosch try at the end was one of the stranger things I can remember seeing in a rugby game.

My theory is Mapimpi was gearing up to do a backwards moonwalk all the way under the posts before touching it down, realised that would make him look like a douche of Chris Ashton-like proportions, saw Bosch there, remembered he owed him 20 rand and gave him the try hoping that would erase his debt.

Of course, this theory relies on the Rebels' defence allowing him to time to process and consider all of these factors deeply, but to be honest that doesn't really feel like such an obstacle.

And that, gentle reader, is the full display of Sydney Schools Rugby on show: Tom English makes a break but can't pass to his right under modest pressure.

Sure try gone begging.

Still too many basic errors from Rebels. Kicking out on full including from a kick off, some basic catch and pass errors and missed tackles.

Losing by 12 was reasonable reflection of game, didn't deserve to lose by more. Try just before half time and try where we were attacking and lost ball and Sharks ran 100 metres were the difference.

Despite the result, an enjoyable day on the hill in Ballarat.

To be honest it doesn’t matter. The TMO is there to eliminate human error in decision making, why slow the game down when the system plain and simply doesn’t work.

Shoulder charge (no arms in the tackle) by Bosch. Should have been penalised at least but play on probably ruled because Bosch came off the worse in the collision.
Exactly Bosch sees he is going to try and bump him off and then drops his arm and leads into contact with his shoulder, the fact he gets dominated in contact is irrelevant

Yes too many errors from rebels - they need to be better and get the result. As two yellow cards and 2 players down for sharks better sides then rebels would have got more pay for that.

"Chick chick AJ. Ut's Skeeny here. I'd like to show you Blue number 8 putting dangerous contact on White 10"

The Rebels are like rabbits in headlights. The passage of play where they had a scrum in their own 22 and went back over half way just shows how they panic

I thought DHP could have done more there - particularly as the scrum was the best option for the Shorks to slow the game down. In calling the scrum, he should have asked Jacobs to keep an eye out for delaying tactics, and bin any props fart-arsing around.

Probably lost a valuable minute there, even though they got the try

Just to compound the error of Mpimpe's short try, in the lead up a tackle occurred about 5m out with a Rebels player over the ball, on his feet. Sharks No 7 in from the side, and I mean 90 degrees to the side to clean out the Rebel. No penalty. Very next tackle/ruck, two Sharks players immediately off their feet to seal off the ball. No penalty. Try scored about 30cm short a couple of rucks later.

The later 90m try was also from an illegal strip after Cottrill had a knee on the ground.

An atrocious display by the ref and an atrocious decision to award the game to a Saffa ref.
