And Ardie just apologised for the gesture after that match, said it was out of character, in the heat of the moment, and especially for the kids watching as they’re trying to clean up the game.
I hate when someone claims it was out of character, he did it so he should own it. It is a soft way of trying to weasel out of your own actions using words given to you by media advisors.

I don't see it as a bad thing, I am all for passion on the field, it would be very rare for such a threat to be acted so just accept it as sportsmanship.

I thought it was a shame that the Rebels "victim" of the threat didn't sprint to him on the sideline and make some type of threat along the lines of "wait till you get back on, I am going to F**k you up" (I realise he would not have a chance).

It would build tension and would be a marketing dream. It would be the advert for the next game before the two.

I know I was pretty excited for him to end is 10 minutes to see what would happen

The Storm has been bankrolled by Rupert in a big way. Are you seriously suggesting that Rugby Australia could have thrown as much money to the Rebels?
No but a better team could have gotten better crowds. A decent team like the Brumbies without a HUGE budget, they spent money in stars and got nothing

Storm got more funds? Yes
Have been Rebels well managed all this years? No

Unfortunately the Brumbies don’t draw as much as their success should warrant. One good thing Rugby does in Victoria (I’m not sure how much credit the Rebels deserve) is produce players. For all the Storms on field success, virtually none of their players are locals.

Or when he said "But I understand that can be taken the wrong way." Mate you gestured slitting your throat and said you're f*cking dead. It's everyone else's fault for taking it the wrong way.

The bloke would have the IQ of a plant, are you surprised he makes feeble excuses to try and defend is grubby behaviour? I’m not. The Canes should replace him as captain

The existence of the Rebels certainly would have helped keep talent in the pathway. They've underperformed in their time but they have been successful in developing an increasingly fruitful local talent pool. Which is something that's very much needed and should be further fostered in both Victoria and WA.

Brumbies is not a success in term of economics but they consistenly produce good players to feed Super Rugby and test level.

Storm doesnt produce local players but is that a real problem for them? The pool of League players in Australia is HUGE. The largest in worldwide, they can feed many teams in non-traditional states

Rugby has been played in Victoria for a long time. "They" are not the problem, "we the rugby supporters of Melbourne" are the problem.
The ARU butchered expansion. Obviously growing the game was hard when it was an amateur. But at the same time it was 1906 when the Australian National Football Council introduced a levies on the clubs and leagues in Aussie rule’s heartland to support the game in NSW, ACT and Queensland where rugby was dominate.

The success of the Swans is over 100 years in the making.

It's particularly important as the game has shrunk in QLD and NSW.

Tapping the potentially massive playing pool of Melbourne's Pasifika community has been one of RAs lone successes in recent years.

I was surprised to see it become such a big deal. All Blacks have been doing the throat slit gesture during the haka for years and no one's given a shit.

Like come on, we're watching a sport where blokes regularly destroy their bodies for our entertainment, but this is the line in the sand?

Ardie knew he had crossed a line. He had. This was not a choreographed part of a haka, it was a spontaneous gesture which I for one thought looked like a threat.

That's a trend in contact sports not just Rugby. But it is important that we look to develop local pathways in both Victoria and WA as a means of reducing the reliance on Sydney and Brisbane to produce talent.

The throat slit gesture in the haka is a coordinated dance move that is a very different thing to picking out an individual and using the throat slit to say I am going to kill you. You cannot compare the two. He was lucky he didn't receive a second yellow for it.

I’m just happy it’s created interest in a genuinely attractive match. Articles running on the ABC about it, pundits and fans discussing it in the UK. Good stuff.

I don’t disagree with anything you write. I’m just saying a surprising amount of rugby talent comes out of Victoria. When you consider the state is afl crazy and have had a successful nrl team for decades, that is a good thing for Australian rugby. And yes, if the Rebels could retain and develop that talent, that would be ideal. Here’s hoping in the future they can, it’d be all the better for Australian rugby.

Good guy, salt of the earth, Kiwi just doing his part to build rugby's profile in his mates back yard. Keeping the ANZAC spirit alive.

It looks like there are more Super Rugby fans in UK than in Oceania. More than in Australia sure. They always talk about Super Rugby meanwhile in Oceania nobody cares about their rugby

Agree. They should allow jumping on people’s heads in the game because the guardians of the game jump at the end of the Haka.
