Super Rugby R4 2025: Waratahs v Force @ SFS, Saturday 8 March

Tahs threads this year have been so strange. I normally flick though them an hour into the match, or towards the end and they are just so negative. I assume they are copping a flogging.

The I'll check the score and they will be winning by 15 points.

Force played with courage and valiance securing 46% of possession despite a 19 to 5 penalty count. The Tahs discipline especially in the first half in all games this season is nothing short of miraculous. Their offerings to the rugby gods resulting in Zen like self control rarely seen by any sports team ever witnessed. It is truly an unreal performance to behold. Well done Tahs.
Courage and even more courage. I think your use of those words might differ from mine. Penalties aside, you may want to dig a little deeper into the game and even the stats before using those words. The offloads afforded, the Force players who were beaten or missed a tackle, the turnovers conceded. The lack of turnovers achieved. There were a lot of things in The Forces control that could have been better. I think Cron and the coaching team were a little more realistic when they admitted to that being their worst performance. Was there willing and effort shown, sure, but the Force players were collectively so much less clinical than last week. I doubt the word courage will get bandied around when they do their game review.

Was at the match with Hawko. And he's right, it was painful to be there. All the good pieces the above posters noted were correct, but, the collapse in structure after 4/5 phases was excruciating to watch live. Most above haven't put enough weight on the diabolical performance the Force put in; sadly for them their promising start to this season came to a screeching halt last night. I mentioned to Hawko the Force somehow got on the wrong side of the ref when he caned them for every minor transgression in the second half. Anyways, we'll take the points, thank you.

The good:

Kellaway's performance was much improved on his poor outing last week. We all know Andrew's an intelligent footballer, and he played intelligently last night.
Jorgensen had a blinder. What a rugby player he is.
Bell is getting better and better.
Grant put in an effective workmanlike shift from the second row. A delightful contrast to Inches' games this year.
Gamble never stopped putting in.
Creighton did the simple stuff well with ball in hand.
The centres were outstanding in defence.

The bad:

The lineout.
Leota's had better games in the past, much better. Dunno what can be done about Rob ATM.
Tupou looks to be unfit while he's carrying an excess 15kg. His contribution outside scrums was woeful.
Creighton's goal-kicking was crap.
Gordon's box-kicking was crapper. Again.
The team's overall field kicking was crappest.
The team's attacking structure after 4/5 phases was unbefitting a professional rugby team. However, this is fixable on the training paddock.

Couldn't see this one live, so interesting to get another perspective. With the lineout, how much do you attribute to Force players disrupting? Also with some aspects like Gordon's box kicking, how much is how poor the chase is? ie. is it poor execution or how the team responds thats more the issue. Also I thought it was reported that Tupou had lost some weight. I think people like @Tomikin are being unrealistic about comparing younger Tupou pre all his leg injuries to current, trying to refind form Tupou post injuries. It's pretty obvious he doesn't have the same pace atm.

Attacking structures breaking down doesn't surprise me. It's the last thing that tends to get embedded in teams and with so many new players, combinations are going to take time. As long as they're heading in the right direction game to game, thats what you want to see. This was an improvement from last week and hopefully next week it will be another as we know how good the connections at the Reds are. I think the next couple of games will be revealing as to how the Tahs are really tracking.

Ive been willing to give the guy benefit of the doubt but in years pasted at the Reds, he would have put the foot down on that grubber he kicked and been on for a try. He put it through jogged slow and then walked..I get it you're a thp, no one else can do it.. but we know you can..

I thought exactly the same, Tomikin. Exactly. Not the player he was and in this current form should not be kicking, be a prop with some go-forward and look for supporting backs.

Dream draw… let’s see how they go on the road and with a fair ref. 19-4 penalty count .. they couldn’t lose. Force weren’t at the best but the referee seemed to be only looking for penalties for one side. The Tahs were offside just as much as the Force. Mabey had a dud match with Tahs v Drua last week too. He should go back to refereeing NZ schoolboys games.

Tomikin

He was lighter on the feet. He’s still explosive but seems to play heavier and slowing down a bit.

For the Wallabies sake I’d want him to just focus on being the most dominant scrummager he can be and then be there for a pick n go near the line.
I agree his one of the best THP props at least in the south, no one really can dominate him... But we use to see a 8 playing prop.. His probably the best THP in oz.. but god I want the bastard who played 80 mins a game and destory scrums then run the ball back..

That was the most functional the Tahs have been for many years

Good defense
Abrasive forwards
We even passed to ball all the way to a winger in space

Still stuff to work on but, just better

I even thought the centres were effective
I have a hate for the Tah's that isnt normal.. I just can't like them, Brumbies fan so understandable.. But Dan has got them playing rugby.. like not perfect but I have a small, (tiny horrible part) of me that Im happy they are 3 and 0.. nothing perfect.. but no hate..

Completely justified fan base going on previous years. Tahs fans do the opposite and everyone calls them delusional...

I think everyone understands this and it's why Tah fans aren't going nuts.

Reds in NZ showed the reality check facing Aus sides and why it was dumb to be going in on the Brumbies when their draw to start the year has been brutal. Brums sit in a great position for the season ahead with win in Fiji and Eden Park....

It's weird with the Tahs - everyone else wants them to lose; if they win it's deemed as unworthy due to the draw / refereeing / apparently poor opposition and some people seem to have the expectation that fans shouldn't enjoy some wins as a consequence.
I want all Aus teams to win as many as they can.

Then if they lose it's how can you possibly be so bad with the largest and strongest juniors, RA putting them in a high chair and feeding them...

Maybe I'm not overly happy yet as I'm going into games expecting the worst so it's a nice surprise/relief then they win over edge of my seat and gutted if they lose. I'm numb to that still. I'll still be stoked with a middle of the table season and see some guys establish themselves for the future outside of Bell.

I'm taking every win now as a bonus considering last season. Based on the three games I've seen, I feel there's room for improvement, and there have been some positive changes from LY. I'm a bit the same as you Ghost, mildly optimistic, but fearing a trouncing and dismal performance.

As to the game plan, I found it interesting the continued use of the high ball, with limited success

Now, add Sua'ali'i for a bit of chasing and jumping, all of a sudden the concept makes more sense
