If he wasn’t signed past 2023 they don’t have to tear up his contract, they just don’t have to re-sign him

Indeed.

Anyway, it might pad out a few off-season postings on this thread.

When Beale returned, his agreement was "until the end of 2023"...

His lawyers, a few months ago, secured court permission for him to travel overseas to take up *unconfirmed* offers to play.

But perhaps that's just a smokescreen and he's still training to suit up for the Tahs -- at thirty-five years of age.

Yeah, nah. I'd say he's already flicked.

In the unlikely event he's not, the Tahs won't be naming him in the squad.

They don't need to, and why would they?
Oh right didnt realise the contract was till the end of 23, there you.go, cannot see any reason why he would be announced in the squad haha

Chiefs and Blues to play trial matches in Japan:

Article suggests there will be a similar arrangement with Australian sides in the future. Feels like dipping a toe in the water for cross over competition in the future.

Australian sides in the future? Isn’t this just an extension of what Australian teams are already doing? Just at a different time since NZ have NPC in October

It's not unrelated, but it goes a bit beyond. There's a bit of competition structure to it around the top 2 NZ teams (was supposed to be the Crusaders, but they're in the UK) going over and playing top 4 teams from Japan, rather than specific team to team partnerships.
That quartet is made up of defending champions Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bay, who retired All Blacks hooker Dane Coles has just joined; the runner-up Saitama Wild Knights, coached by Robbie Deans; along with losing semifinalists Yokohama Canon Eagles and Tokyo Sungoliath, the latter with All Blacks skipper and long-time Chiefs co-captain Sam Cane in their ranks during his one-season sabbatical.
It’s understood Japan wanted the top two Kiwi sides from last season to take part, though that was not possible with the defending champion Crusaders on their own overseas pre-season sojourn to Ireland and England, facing United Rugby Championship winners Munster, and the Bristol Bears, on February 4 and February 10 (NZ time), respectively.
If they got the top 2 Australian sides as well it would be the beginnings of a cross over comp.

"Angus Ta’avao will return home to the Blues for the 2024 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season, signing on with the club through until the end of 2025."

First time out will be his 50th for Loss Bleus to go with 62 for Tribe & 22 for 'tahs.

Being reported as an early release from Tribe on personal grounds, being his six year old son's medical condition.

AFL isn’t a threat. I love the game grew up with it but it’s the biggest white boy sport known to man. Compare that to rugby.
Really? I know of some quite good junior rugby players going to Western Jets football trials by invite, they had never played a game of club footy and were invited just because of the potential to be converted.

Can also add, Australia is losing a few young guys to collage 7s programs in the USA every year now.

You’d find there is a lot higher rates of diversity in rugby than Aussie rules.

Yes Australian rules has a higher participation rate in indigenous communities than Rugby Union. But outside of the indigenous lads it’s incredibly few and far between.

There are two non white captains across 5 super rugby teams while there are only two in the AFL across 18 sides

It's polynesian players. We all would rather play rugby or league over AFL cos you get to actually hit someone.

Good graphics so far, chiefs including number of caps is nice, but I think I prefer the Drua's specific position breakdown. Ideal would be both.

Any bets on worst squad graphic? After last year's team sheets I'm backing the Blues to put out something just about unreadable.

Rebels seem to tend that way too.

The Blues social media intern excelled themselves during the RWC. Here's hoping they're back on deck for this season
