Speaking of the officials, the touchy Rasta with the big long last name is a bloody good official. Been watching him all season. He is incredibly fit and has a very good eye on the play as well as player management. He refs a good contest this bloke.

I also like the way he backed himself in what he saw. He saw the ball grounded, was 100% confident in what he saw and backed himself in his advice to the ref. He has a bright future this bloke.

re: the Barrett YC I thought Peyper got it right both with the decision & the way he explained it to Shields. Whether deliberately or not, Barrett dragged the ball away with his feet/ legs as he rolled clear, denying the Lions quick ball. It's a penalty every time & that close to the line has to be a Yellow. I'd much rather refs etc rule on outcomes rather than trying to guess intent.

I thought it was a pretty clear yellow card.

I think people are being a bit naive saying that Barrett's knocking the ball out whilst rolling away wasn't deliberate.

He could have rolled away from the ball rather than scurrying back towards his own side and dragging the ball with his legs.

The Lions had made a big break and would have almost certainly scored if they'd been allowed the quick ball they were entitled to based on having support at the breakdown.

Canes ran out of petrol big time. Crusaders will have a bit more backbone this week and a more solid defence. Will be a cracking final.

The Lions sure did have an easier road to the final, but they can only play what's in front of them. Talk about the Hurricanes doing the Crusaders in. The same thing so very nearly happened between the Lions and the Sharks.

In the end it could not have happened to a more humble group, from management down to water carrier.

So many of them are discards from other franchises and now look, they are starting to be recognised for higher honours through sheer determination and hard work.

Franco Mostert is the prime example, keeping players such as PSdT and Lood on the bench at national level.

Despite widespread calls for a neutral official, Sanzaar has appointed South Africa's Jaco Peyper to referee the Super Rugby final between the Lions and Crusaders in Johannesburg early Sunday (NZT).​

​

Peyper, who refereed the semifinal between the Lions and Hurricanes, will have the whistle for the final (kickoff 2am Sunday NZT), with New Zealand's Glen Jackson, who refereed the Crusaders-Chiefs semifinal, and Marius van der Westhuizen as his assistants.​

The Television Match Official (TMO) is Marius Jonker.​

Sanzaar CEO Andy Marinos said: "The match official selection is never easy ... The selection criteria for all match official appointments for the last two years follows a clear tournament policy – as agreed by the Sanzaar executive committee and the tournament's stakeholders – that such appointments be merit-based.​

"This policy is written into the tournament protocols and appointments are made according to this policy on a weekly basis. [It] is also the policy used for the finals last year as well as this year.​

"This merit-based policy was reflected with the appointment last year of New Zealand referee Glen Jackson to referee the Hurricanes-Lions final in Wellington. Sanzaar stands behind the policy and believes the best referees should be available to officiate the best matches."​

The current crop of referees is hardly world shattering. But it must be at a low point if Jaco is judged to be the best.

The better solution imo would be to go with a neutral referee so that when controversial decisions happen, they will be put down to general ineptitude rather than bias from the hometown ref.

Sanzar have taken the unusual step of selecting the 2017 Super Rugby Final to trial a new refereeing set-up. Just one official has been selected to fulfil all 3 on-field refereeing roles as well as serving as TMO, should he have any contentious decisions he wants to refer to himself.
