Multiple ways to win a rugby game.

How many tries against the Stormers have been scored vs the amount against the Crusaders?

I don't think anyone is having a go at the Stormers. It's just interesting that the top team at the moment has scored so few tries. That doesn't mean they don't deserve to be at the top of the table or anything like that.

I think what TOCC (and others, including me) is (are) wondering is whether this reflects a change in the game. Should other teams try to play like the Stormers to be successful this year? Or is it too early to say whether the Stormers have established a "style" for this year? Those are the kind of issues I think he's getting at.

It's a discussion, not an attack.

It would also depend on why they haven't been scoring a lot of tries. I haven't had an opportunity to watch them yet this year so can't judge them on that but it is possible to play an attacking game of rugby and not score tries as a) the opposition defence is up to the challenge or b) the opposition give away penalties whenever you get close but the ref is not willing to card them for it. If it is b) then you take the points on offer and win the game that way (like the Reds did against the Brumbies).

I'm in the same boat as you Aussie D - haven't seen them play this year. If the opposition keep infringing in their territory then taking the points is absolutely the right thing to do.

I hear ya, likewise I did not think it was directed at the Stormers but more that state of the game where imo defence is even more important if you have good kickers in your team.

Rugby is about scoring more points than the opposition whether that be by tries or kicks.

Face it if Aus wins the RWC by kicking a few goals will anyone here care?

Yes me, I only want to win a RWC final by 4 tries or more. Otherwise I'm not interested.

If we win the RWC with the bonus point, to they carry over to the next RWC?

I cant be bothered researching it but I'm guessing no rwc finals have been won scoring more than 3 tries actually not sure any have been won with more than 2.

1987 3 tries to 1
1991 1 try to 0
1995 0 tries to 0
1999 2 tries to 0
2003 1 try to 1
2007 0 tries to 0

So 9 tries total in 6 RWC finals!

Stormers had the same tendense last year. I'll rather have solid defense then a leaky one. They will get this sorted as the tournament goes on. To much class in that backline. Also think the Stormers rather keep their defensive lines when chasing up and unders then chasing quick and leave gaps in their defensive lines. Their defense is massive tho.

Can the same trend continue all year, what will happen when the competitions top 2 teams playe each other, Crusaders v Stromers, the best in defence v the best in attack..

Is the penalty kick option been encouraged by the high veldt and will they be able to carry on this game plan when they come to Australia and New Zealand.

Crusaders having to call a draw with the Canes because of an earthquake might skew the table a little bit to.

Agreed. Stormers played very solid against the Bulls. They have a gun place-kicker in Peter Grant too. That's the sort of rugby at the next level up that can win a RWC.

Only seemingly weak link from last night's game for them was Habana who dropped a few balls in the wet - but he then comes up with some individual brilliance to get the try to put them in the clear.

Oh didn't interpret it that way.

I just believe winning is everything. How you do it is neither here nor there.

They have too much class in the backline and will score more tries going forward.

In last night's game the Bulls last ditch defense was great (the only thing that was).

Not many teams would have scored much more.
