Um.

Ok.

But Force aside, wouldn’t you be proud to see an all WA bred side play? A few club players stepping up to fill in the gaps.

Basically the same story as early QLD SOO sides, that is some guns but not the depth of the opposition.

But it never mattered.

yes I understand, but you are loosing sight of what they are trying to do.

Basically concentrate the available talent into 2 near Wallaby sides to create something special. That means there can only be 2 sides. 2 sides from the heartland of rugby in AUS where 90% of the game and players come from. (Im guessing the %)

By all means advocate for a second tier comp for the other states, but lets not detract from the core concept.

The core concept is QLD vs NSW.

Don’t over think it.

My post copied from the other thread. All this is intertwined. IMO SOU should be the same 2 teams to play Super 8 -best of the best , only players with National caps or about to get one. It should be about getting viewers and growing the fans first and foremost. Get over the fact player X isn't really a Queenslander

Super 8, should be the very best second tier rugby comp on the planet. 6 Nations and TRC the only thing to better it.

For that to happen we need 2 representative selected teams from each country, For NZ its simple 1 X South Island 1 X North Island. For Aus it should be the SOU Tahs and Reds (with a number of invitational spots for non NSW & QLD but Wallaby eligible players). Not sure how SA and Jap/PI divide into 2 - but they need to. Basically these are test level players, the best of the best.

Now let see the eyeballs and the ratings from that

For me, no, that is not the core concept.

For me it is getting a very broad potential WB squad playing off in a commercial environment that has fans going nuts. NSW/Qld just happens to be the obvious structure.

If they do this as a simply purist Q v NSW thing, leaving out the broader player availability - then it is a distraction not an interest.

if you're gonna shit all over the eligibility and shoe-horn in guys that aren't from NSW/QLD for the sake of "inclusiveness" we may as well just scrap the concept and play possibles v probables. Id rather do that than a have a game that's parading as a "origin" style concept that doesn't actually follow any logic around who can/cant play

Yep, super off base in my opinion.

As a minority sport in a town that has 9 AFL teams and limited support from the national body until recently we punch pretty high. Hospitals Cup is as far as I can tell the direct competitor to Queensland cup league, been competing against two major football franchises for the last 20 plus years and yet still is the second ranked comp at the fourth tier of rugby in this country.

Don't be a patronising dick.

Were you being genuine and warm when you said the Dewar Shield has been going strongly since pre federation?

C’mon, we are just ribbing each other.

Melbourne isn’t a rugby town, but it’s a great town & there’s some ripples emerging.

SMH saying that all players will be eligible to play SoU. Original list of players eligible to both NSW and QLD based on first club. For those with no affiliation to either QLD or NSW they will go into a draft and can then be selected. While I’m not a fan of this, I reiterate this simply looks to be a grab for casual observers and broadcast money by pitting the best players in australia against each other in a seemingly pseudo wallabies trial. If it gets either or both, eyeballs and/or dollars its a win despite the lack of interest many rusted on fans might have.

The main issues seems where it sits in the calendar. Much like Origin in league, rusted on fans cringe at the thought star players could get injured in mid season Origin games and ruin a clubs chances.

You're re-casting your words a bit and putting some in my mouth but I'll take it the spirit it was intended.

Victorian rugby is small, dedicated and growing, but with a long and proud history. 2011 would have looked different for the Reds if there was no rugby down here.

I don't mind the draft for unaffiliated players because I think it's better to include all the top players than it is to have 100% pure teams, but I think a blanket 'first club' rule isn't ideal. Rugby League has it right with the multiple criteria and eligibility is determined by whichever state is the answer to the highest number. You avoid the situation where someone may have spent almost their whole life in one state, except for the year or 2 they were in the other state which just happened to coincide with them starting to play junior rugby.

for the very few players that end up in the wrong color jumper. well thats tough.

It should be seen as a great honor to play for either state. If you get selected for NSW and dont want to play you can always decline the invitation to play. Somehow, I dont think many will,

As someone that has skin in both a traditional states and emerging ones, I’m a born and bred QLD that’s lived in Vic for a decent amount of time. I have no interest in wanting to see the Vic players play in a watered down QLD team. Give me fire and brimstone from those that care about it. This needs to be about pride and the disdain we as QLDers have for all things NSW on a sporting field, that no other state would comprehend even tho they too have a dislike for NSW but it doesn’t come close. As mentioned numerous times from numerous people just get a Vic vs WA game on as well. Make it a sporting extravaganza for the day.

We softened up the Crusaders for you

EDIT: just checked and the Rebs didn't actually play the 'Saders in 2011. But boy did they get pumped a few times but still stole a win a few times, what a year.

@ The Rebels,

To confirm is this your final answer?

Whatever The Rebs did that year I am eternally grateful for.

SOU makes so much more sense with this draft/franchise/big bash model chat from McLennan.

Looks like we are going to move towards that US sporting model which supports PE, an RA one management model and media content outside of just the games.
