I admit to being a bit different to most on ANZAC claches. Personally I think ANZAC day should be the most important day for NZ and Aus, and I really don't really like using it as promtional tool for their sports! Just too many died to cheapen it for me.

And call me all you like, it's just how I feel.

The two games I got to watch last weekend both had pre-match ANZAC acknowledgements & neither seemed cheap/ tacky or just for show. I'm sure our mates across the ditch did at least as good a job of respecting the ANZAC legacy as we did & if everyone starts from the POV of maintaining that respect I see no reason why ANZAC Round couldn't be a great thing - easily better than the made-up Rivalry & Culture Rounds we currently have.

You misunderstand me WOB, I am very strongly in support of pre-match acknowledgements etc.
I said and I do say I strongly dislike marketing using ANZAC day to promote matches and it leaves me cold when people talk of using it as in ANZAC clashes. As I said it's a personal thing with me , I just very uncomfortable with the who;e idea that we use the wars and all the utterly pointless deaths etc as a way to say hey we can get more interest in a game etc. It's in my mind a lot different to acknowldeging the people who have served, and got injured and died.. I don't even really like the fact that the pubs etc open at 12 so everyone can go and get on piss etc and turn it all into a party.
I understand that many in here like to use it as a way to promote games etc, just I don't , almost like dancing on their graves. And I not criticsing you for it, I admit to being the type of person that can go to a place like Te Papa and go through the Gallipoli exhibition and read the stories etc, and have to almost fight back tears.

Why not corner the women's market? We wont compete with NRL or AFL.

But let's get some sort of women's match going? Make it big - test match of otherwise (Australia v Japan would be an interesting spin...). Doesn't quite fit with the Super W season but worth considering. Unless we make the final of Super W Anzac day every year.

Because how would that work? The women’s game is even less supported than the men’s game. How are we going to make it a financial success?

By cornering the market and catching the wave early of the inevitable attention the sponsors and broadcasters are going to want from a female ‘feature game on a feature day’

But who is going to tune out of the current games to watch women’s rugby. Let’s be honest men’s rugby would struggle to compete

Yes. It would take a risk and some investment but as you say, then men’s game will struggle to compete. Let’s try something different?

I agree, I hate that sport is using the sacrifice of soldiers to promote a game which has no real consequences and then somehow trying to make it appear that the struggle on the field is somehow an equivalent of war.

I don't think sport should be played on ANZAC day and if it is, it should not use the term ANZAC.

My best mate has spent the best part of 20yrs in the navy. ANZAC day is an important thing to him but equally has absolutely no issues with footy been played. He loves the aspect of going to service in the morning, then by lunchtime he can sit down and watch footy all afternoon. You’d have to be a bit of a grinch to think otherwise. I don’t think I have heard a single service man/woman complain about it, let’s not feel some unnecessary guilt that people love to apply these days.

The AFL and NRL ‘events’ bring so much more attention to the actual day that what might actually happen if they didn’t, it’s also a great introduction for children to ANZAC day, especially if the parents arent invested in going to a service or their school isn’t overly invested either.

It’s alright to pay your respects in the morning then thoroughly enjoy the rest of your day, otherwise your local RSL wouldn’t bother opening the bar, having a band play and enjoying some two up.

Yeah, I'm of the opinion it is a great opportunity to engage with a wider and younger audience. Most of us had the ability to hear stories from grandparents and alike who were directly involved or impacted by both the World Wars. A lot of people under 25 haven't had the same interactions. I'm not saying they are ignorant to it but it is an alternate avenue of education. The warriors chat in regards to games comes from the garbage ch9 spew and I don't see it from players or fans.

I like how a lot of ceremonies are now acknowledging recent campaigns in the Middle East which went for almost 20 years and this year being 50 years since the end of Australian involvement in Vietnam.

Yeh I understand apprehension around events on Good Friday, ANZAC day and even Christmas day gets some sports these days. There is a lot of tradition and for some people real significance and importance at a family/personal/religious level.

But it's not like these days are being celebrated by a special episode of Lego Masters or ANZAC themed reality shows.

Australia is a sporting nation, our country thrives when we rally around our common pastime. The sports being played on these days provide a source of entertainment for our younger generation as well. And they are always respectful.

But you can buy an Anzac jersey for League that has American Soldiers on it.

That is great, some people have different opinions, this is what makes the world an interesting place, and especially an online forum.

I am happy that others enjoy it and find it appropriate.

I did 18 years and multiple tours, I don't necessarily have an issue with sport been played on the day, I do however have an issue with professional sporting organisations leveraging the ANZAC reputation in order to profiteer for themselves.

I hate the repeated references to how the playing field is a battlefield like war.. it isn't..
I hate the inference that these players are warriors or embody the warrior spirit that ANZACs did...they don't, its a ridiculous analogy
I hate that the NRL awarded an "ANZAC Day Medal" to the player of the match a couple of years back, that term and medal already represents something far more important than POTM.
I also hate all these teams marketing ANZAC Day jerseys and merchandise with a lack of transparency about how the profits of these jerseys are been distributed back to support veterans, some teams do it well, other teams make no mention at all.

ANZAC Day isn't about commercialisation and profiteering off the ANZAC reputation, some teams/companies/organisations are taking it too far in order to chase a dollar, that doesn't mean sport shouldn't be played, it should just be done respectfully.

Amen Adam, exactly point I was trying to make. As I said it's my personal opinion that it should not be used as a promotional exercise etc. I am quite happy I not only one that feels that. And not insisting that others have to agree, it just leaves me cold.

Quick update on my Playoffs musings from last week:

> Tribe now far enough in front I don't see them being caught. That said I reckon they're vulnerable this week v Clan IF McMillan rests a heap of players AND Clan play like demons for the full 80. Other than that the only other possible loss I can see for them is on a particularly dreary Round 14 night in Canberra.

> Both top-5 v top-5 & both next-5 v next-5 matches went the way of the home side (I had Brums 60/40 to win away in my calcs) & Loss Bleus won the top-5 v next-5 away crossover.

> The gap between fifth & sixth narrowed to nine but I expect that to be back to 11 or even more after this week.

> Rebels are now joint-10th but with Brums home & away plus Waratahs & Clan away I don't think they'll stay there long.

> There are no Round 11 top-5 v top-5 matches & only one next-5 v next-5 (Reds v 'tahs) but two crossovers: Clan v Tribe as already mentioned & Drua at home to 'canes.

> In summary I'm sticking with my predicted finishing order: 1. Tribe 2. Brums 3. Crusaders 4. Blues 5. 'canes, 6. 'tahs 7. Clan or Reds 8. Reds or Clan 9. Force or Drua 10. Drua or Force.
