I watched the game with no real bias for either team. I thought it was a cracker, for at least the first half. Owens was fine. The SA bench was far better and they made less mistakes overall. Hooper is not a captain, get a frickin' haircut and then you won't have spend half the game pushing the hair out of your eyes. #2 buzzcut should do it nicely.

Don't like Hooper as a Captain at all.

How woeful. We lost to away to 2nd in the world after defeating them at home.

That's not at all a result reflective of our position in the rugby food chain. Oh wait.

I am away and haven't seen the game yet.....I used this thread as my viewing when I woke up, which I have to say was a rather entertaining way to do it!

Seems we were right there until the end and then lost our composure a bit due to some ineffective subs and some bewildering ref decisions??

It also seems to me that our biggest concern at the moment is 12.....MT remains an enigma with half the posters saying he won't start next week and the other half saying he had a great game, and it sounds that KB (Kurtley Beale) had a Barry when he came on.....

Anyway, a bets a bet, so.....

Fuck the wallabies, fuck this forum, and fuck the lot of ya!

See ya here this time next week :)

Watching it now 12 to go and we are up, and just read some of these comments. It could be 17 - 8 with 12 to go. I read we lost but still don't know the final score. It was so tight and over 30 phases they went for a drop goal, that says something.
It has been a very good game of rugby up until 70min.
Kuindrani, Slipper, Hooper all strong.

With cooper, Speight, Moore, Pockock either starting or off the bench we'd have a comparable bench to Boks.

Perhaps To'omua isn't looking as good because he doesn't have Quade inside him to play the nutto fly half role that allows him to just settle it down? I don't know, but they combine brilliantly at the n of last season so I think we are missing a bit of that.

Haven't seen the game, but it sounds like it was a tough loss to swallow, but a loss nonetheless.

I love this team to bits but we are missing something and I still think it's passion and a completely willingness to put it all on the line for the jersey right up until the siren goes. It's what kev has in spades but unfortunately he's lost the rugby playing that used to go with it. Tough road to England from here, but it'll be good to see how QC (Quade Cooper) goes tonight.

Go the wobs, heads up lads, our time will come! Eventually.....

I thought Aus were excellent in the first half and possibly the best 40 minutes they've put in under Link. South Africa really didn't offer much in attack in the first half but crucially they hung in there and kept in touch.

South Africa were excellent in the second half and really finished the game well. They've shown a lot of great traits so far this tournament. They were out played by Argentina but they dug in and pulled a win out in the end. They had to do that again today especially in the first half when Australia looked so dangerous.

In addition their bench have made a real contribution this year and in a few matches have been able to up the tempo and get them over the line when games have been tight. Going into the RWC next year that ability to stick in games when they've no right to and then to finish in the ascendency will really help them in the knock out stages.

The thing that's impressed me most about them is their ability to turn a performance around. This is something I think the Wobs lack at the moment. If they start well and run in a few tries you can see them absolutely demolishing very good test teams; however when the game is tight they don't seem to be able to pinch the tough wins. This is something they need to add to their game before next year.

As I've said before there's no point scoring 8-9 tries on the minnows in their RWC pool only to lose a crucial tight game against England or Wales or their QF. If you want to win the RWC you're going to have to win a few tight games along the way.

Some positives from tonight. I thought Kuridrani was excellent and barring injury the 13 jersey should be his through to the World Cup. The Aus scrum was excellent today and has really made significant strides in the last year. With such dangerous running lines in the backs that solid scrum is going to be a great platform for Aus to launch attacks.

This is the first game this year where I feel there more clarity around the team. Guys are starting to own jerseys now and there's a bit more of a settled feel about the side. Rather than it seeming like everyone bar Izzy was one game away from "never playing for Australia again" as many have put it, guys are looking more comfortable on the test stage.

Also combinations are working well and now the way you play, as opposed to who's playing, is creating danger. So many guys are running good lines and supporting the man with the ball that it's difficult for teams to cope. There's a lot less reliance on an X-Factor player to be the one that makes something happen. Guys in the squad can slot in and do a job and the team still looks dangerous with ball in hand.

For me Australia are finally starting to look like a team rather than a collection of the most talented individuals shoehorned into the starting 15 with little regard to balance.

Today is also one of the few times in recent years where there have been any real positives to come out of a Wobs defeat. They're certainly not the finished article but I feel they're moving in the right direction.

Barring a very surprise 1st win for Argentina tonight it looks like NZ will once again with TRC but there are signs that both SA and Aus are moving in the right direction.

29 phases and not 1 turn over no pressure at the break down I have no doubt Poey or Hodgo would have won a pen in that situation the ball was just sitting there a few times but no one was strong enough to win it. [\quote]

And I have no doubt their high penalty rate would have seen us concede more penalties.

Things I didn't cover in the article because I was half asleep and didn't notice:

Beale is no good if you don't have the ball. However at least he's started to tackle low and actually help to stop blokes. The coaches are listening.

But as I said, the whole bench were poor value.

By far the best test I have seen so far in TRC (having not seen a test Aus have not played). I was very disillusioned with the Wallabies after the last few tests and despite the rubbish last 15 it was enjoyable and has me sort of optimistic.

Few points that need answers before we can come close to winning the RWC.
Consistency - Why can they not get up like that every test?
What goes wrong in the last 15?
Decision making in the halves is still lacking?

On the last point I really think Genia/Cooper will be back sooner than later. Phipps/Foley will improve with experience and both have shown enough to retain there spots in the 23. A chip on the first phase of an attacking scrum is dumb. To'omua has me worried, kicks straight to the FB in the first half and failing to find touch several times now. Where is Godwin? He is the only player likely to threaten for that spot before the cup.

Well To'omua is looking unlikely for next week also Simmons and McCalman are doubtful

There bench > our bench

If Kurtley Beale wasn't an absolute net negative today I'd be calling for him to replace To'omua. Looking forward to the return of Cooper and Genia because 9 and 12 are two positions where we could really use an injection.

I think what makes this loss so hard to swallow is the fact that we were a massive chance to win with 10 to go and couldn't close it out. The respective benches were a big factor in that. The Boks seemed to step it up with fresh legs and we were flagging by the end. Gaffa actually makes a fair point about the openside position. In that period of nearly 30 phases late in the game a turnover would have relieved the pressure and Hodgo is currently the best exponent of that in Australian rugby. He's also a massively hard bugger who would have hurt some blokes too. Having him on instead of Higgers would have helped I think.

I also think some of our decision making under pressure and fatigued was really lacking. Two incidents stick out in particular: Phipps' bloody grubber kick on first phase and who ever tried that offload to Hooper on our goal line. Both cost us badly.

Oz "kicking game" is illogical.
They avoid touch when they need relief, go to touch when they have position and chip or short kick it away when they run out of ideas.
I guess if the intention is to prevent anyone working out what our unifying theory is then its working.

Agreed. It was mind boggling the amount of times after weathering the Springbok storm we would casually kick it right down their throats to just go through the whole ordeal again.

Really for 70 mins we were right in it and dropped our bundle. But seriously I thought we took it to them for the most part. But did you really expect us to win in SA?

Australia were better team for 70 minutes....but end of day scoreboard saids it all.....can't talk about great promise for ever as yes that won't win bledisloe, tri-nations, world cup etc....

Self belief.....knowing how to close out matches....and just winning....

Good points...depth....we don't have it...we don't have strong development paths NZ and SA have so until fix this won't fix the root cause

I think the Phipps (was it?) kick, when the Wallabies were hot on attack perhaps sums up for me one of Wallabies biggest weaknesses, it was obviously a planned move, with a quick look should not have really been attempted even if it was called. It is called heads up rugby, don't just play to set moves, sometimes you have to see whats happening and let instincts take over.
All in all a bloody good test, as a reasonable neutral I think anyone using ref excuses etc are just making themselves look stupid and hope everyone will realise that and most Auusie supporters will agree I am sure it was a fair result and a good test!
