Spies holds no fears for Wallaby eighth man
by Stephen Nell 02/09/2010, 23:24

Wallaby No 8 Ben McCalman is not at all intimidated about the prospect of facing Pierre Spies in Saturday’s Tri-Nations test in Bloemfontein.

“Pierre played his best test (of the year) last week, but I have confidence after playing against him earlier this year,” said McCalman.

He was referring to the Wallabies’ 30-13 win in Brisbane.

McCalman came on as a substitute 10 minutes before the end and helped Will Genia knock the last nail into the coffin of the Springboks’ Tri-Nations title ambitions.

“I got the ball from Will Genia and ran into Spies. I got the better of him in that situation. It was a great moment and made me realise that I want more test rugby. Will scored shortly after that,” he said.

The Wallabies are clinging to the win in Brisbane and the lead that was surrendered at Loftus Versfeld last week as evidence that they have what it takes to beat the Boks in Bloemfontein.

“Everyone is disappointed that we could not convert that lead into a victory last week,” said McCalman.

“The Boks are physical, but the important thing is that we stick to our plan and take the game to them. Hopefully it can work in our favour if we can move those big guys around a bit.”

McCalman, skipper Rocky Elsom and fetcher David Pocock will be involved in an interesting battle of the loose forward combinations with Spies, Juan Smith and Schalk Burger.

Pocock told Sport24 on Thursday that the new application of the breakdown laws are good for the game because it encourages attacking rugby.

He believes there are still opportunities for fetching flanks to win turnover possession.

“You have to be careful about getting involved at the breakdown because you can easily concede a penalty. But I still believe there are plenty of opportunities at the breakdown,” said Pocock.

The Wallaby star expects Heinrich Brüssow to adapt easily when he returns from his knee injury.

“I believe players with that kind of ability will always find a way of doing well. One of the nice things about rugby and all its intricacies is that you always have to think on the field. I believe Brüssow will do well when he returns.”

Either McCalman will fuck up the ****, or he'll get fucked up; whatever happens, it'll be a sight to behold.

I hope you're right, topo. The jagged edge player the Wob's have been missing?

He's not your Scott-Young nut case type of abrasive player. He's just a big tough kid from the country who doesn't say much and loves whacking people. When he plays at Uni and I am watching with someone who is not a regular Uni spectator I always say "watch no 6. Sooner or later he will whack someone and you don't want to miss it."

Love the talk, but let's see the walk Benny. I have no doubt that the kid has mongrel and the right stuff be a handy test footballer, but I'd be keeping the comments in the locker at the moment.

Correct. Spies is a big unit that often goes missing.

Which is why I would always have him on the bench in test rugby but the coaches have an obsession with him. He is a fantastic ball carrier and hard to stop if you give him space but often still plays like a back who doesnlt know what to do now he is a forward. It's not evident in Super rugby but in tests he gets shown up too often.

Higginbotham reminds me of Spies, both are physically awesome, but both lack a complete understanding of what's required of them in there position

Whatever happens, I doubt McCalman will die wondering whether he was up to standard.
Hope he rolls Spies. Id love to see a backup to Palu discovered.

I think Spies and MCCalman will come in contact a handful of times.

Too much is being made of a "showdown". There won't likely be one.

MCCalman needs to worry about his job. Not about showing up one opposition player.

I'd be more worried about running into Danie Rossouw than Spies if I were him. It hurst little more than Spies' attempted tackles.

who's to say he isn't worried about Rossouw more? He was clearly asked a question about Spies. He answered the question. Nothing more.

Phew. Relax. I am referring to some of the comments made in the thread. Not what he said.

I was pulling the piss in my first post. Notice the ridiculous title and smiley.

Yeah personally I'd be a bit more worried about Rossouw or, perhaps worse, Juan Smith since he'll be there every single time.

Christ, what a fucking world class muppet. Talking himself before he's even had a test start ? This lot get dumber and dumber. How hard is it ? Your first few tests you are cliche city "honour" blah blah "represent your country" blah blah.

I rate Spies I think he's class, so I'd love it if McCalman can get the points on Sunday morning & then back it up in Sydney a week later.

I thought McCalman was the standout Aussie forward in the 1st Barbarians match this year he reminds of Daniel Heenan only slightly more mobile.

Have you actually seen what he said? He is the last bloke in the world to blow his own trumpet. It's hard to get anything out of him most of the time. He was simply answering questions that were put to him.
