Drummoyne Council made Glebe-Balmain change their name to Drummoyne in the 20s before they could get a lease on Drummoyne Oval but at least that makes some sense.
Maybe Burwood was considered too specific and a little too elite?

The club was originally called Burwood, & wanted to play at StLukes oval , situated in the Concord Council electorate.
Concord Council did not want a team called Burwood playing on one of their fields , & would only allow it to play
there if the name was changed .Hence the name was changed to Western Suburbs.

By the way, an old Eastwood mate of mine, whose late father-in-law played for Western Suburbs and then Eastwood (changing clubs, like a number of players did, perforce), told me last week that Hugh Roach's father (sic) played for Wests.
I quizzed him on this, to the effect that it must have been Roach's grandfather, but he insisted. Poor old Hugh. Not only does he play for Eastwood, he has Western Suburbs blood in his veins.
He will never get onto the RA Board, will he?

Interestingly, their club is/was located in Burwood Rd Burwood. Amalgamated with Burwood RSL in the early 00s and is now known as Club Burwood - the circle is now complete.

Certainly for colts the post match was always at the ground. I have vague recollections of going to their club in Burwood - although I might be confusing this with going to Briars club after subbies games.

Was Singo still playing for Briars when you went there? He tried to get me to play there at one stage, it would have been the late sixties.

Prior to the acquisition of the bowling club, for many years, post match was held upstairs in West's thriving licensed club in George St Burwood.
This was next door to the Briars club rooms.
Post match was eventually held at the bowling club when Wests gained the lease of that. This included colts.
When Wests gave up the lease on the bowling club , due to the costs involved & lack of support from the bowlers who used to go to Burwood RSL when they finished playing their games etc. , post match reverted to Concord Oval.
More recently ,Burwood RSL purchased what used to be Wests rugby club in George St , together with adjoining properties , & built what is now known as Club Burwood, part of which includes an area devoted to West Harbour Club.
John Singleton played Judd Cup with the Briars club ,but switched to 3rd /4th grade at the Western Suburbs club when they were dropped to the sub district competition. After that he switched to the Lane Cove club.
This was next door to the Briars club rooms.

I think I probably went to both at some point in time. IIRC both were very friendly places and sometimes quite long evenings.

Memories are swirling back in relation to an old pulpit in the Briars club from which post game speeches etc were made. Am I halucinating?

I'm sure I read earlier that Eastwood were moving out of TG Milner and heading west. I contemplated going back through the thread but at 40 pages I reconsidered. Is it true that this is the Woodies last year at TG?? If so where will they be in 2019?
