[I like to watch]

I haven't seen many Penrith Rugby players good enough to get a match payment in League!! Not just Penrith players!!

You don't have to be NRL standard to get paid.
I live on the Northern Beaches,and I know guys that struggled in 3rd grade were being paid to play locally,in front of literally a handful of spectators.

I stand by the argument that union is struggling due to geography. If you play league or soccer your furthest away game in the local comp is 20 mins away, even when you get into rep stuff the teams seem to be better geographically placed for less travel. Example of of this is my local shire league comp, two clubs are literally on the same street, if you stand in one club house you can see the other across the road. As opposed to southern districts closest game is Randwick or Sydney uni in the city. In this day and age convenience is key, playing Union is not convenient I love my rugby but haven’t played for quiet a few years because I don’t want to give up two nights for training, have a decently early/sober night on Friday so I can spend all my Saturday at footy.

Maybe the key to having better numbers in colts/grade in both Shute shield and subbies is to divide into conferences based on geography

I have had to travel two hours down to Nowra for games as a 12 year old and the equivalent of Foreshaw to Rat Park three times a week from ages 16-20 for Colts with Randwick. While I do tend to agree with your idea of looking to create more geographically friendly competition that would require concerted efforts to develop the game in areas that are severely under served.

Get excited! Round 1 is almost upon us...footy, burgers, suburban grounds and rusted on supporters...it doesn't get much better.

Round 1 Tips:
Randwick vs Gordon (Randwick in a canter. With the Ken Catchpole memorial game and a strong young squad, to much to play for 30+)
Eastern suburbs vs West Harbour (Very tough game to pick. Expect these two side to be the big improvers for 2018. I will say Easts in a nail biter)
Eastwood vs Manly (What a game!! Hard to pick but Woods at home, so Eastwood in a close one)
Northern Suburbs vs Warringah (Another pearler....Rats by 3)
Syd Uni vs Parramatta (Based on pre season form, Two Blues could really threaten but Students at home too strong. Uni by 10)
Southern Districts vs Penrith (Lets hope Emus show some fight or SRU could intervene sooner rather than later)

Easts will be interesting: quality backs to burn but a bit short in the tight 5 - and we all know where the real winning is done.

No I clearly haven’t. Doesn’t change my point though. City people have certain expectations, country people have a different set of expectations.......country rugby ain’t doing too crash hot anyway so not a great example to use.

Western suburbs ain’t that bad, I travel from my area to penrith on a regular basis for work 45-55 mins. Parra to penrith pretty comparative to Souths to eastern suburbs/city
