He means 10 years old, not played at 10.
Mark Ella and Tony Melrose were the 10's on the tour.
Wally Lewis was playing in the centres in those days.

Lol where did I get that from?

It was Dominic Vaughan and Darrell Lester from NSW

LOL
I think Dominic Vaughan (Newcastle) was the first string half on the tour with backup from Darrell Lester (Joeys) and Michael Egan (Matraville).

Ricky Stuart made the 1985 Aust Schoolboys team to the UK and went on the 1987 Wallaby tour to Argentina. He played in 3 games but no tests.

Lester was from the famous Matraville High school (famous then).
Another Koori kid.

Five players from the same school. It must be some kind of record.

Anyway, the local public high schools in the Eastern Suburbs used to play in a mid week rugby comp and it was a pretty high standard.

Rep teams would be chosen for the different zones and eventuate in an Australian Schoolboys team being chosen.

I'm not too sure when that mid week comp finished but Matraville High doesnt play rugby now.

Testing my memory but I think there was Waratah Shield Final when St Edmunds played Matraville. I think some of the Faaingas were in the Eddies team - someone can work out when that was: I recall it got some press because matraville had not really featured at that level since the Ellas so I went out to T G Milner and had a look at the final

Sporting News Australia is doing some great work in the SS space.
  • On their recent footage they made reference to the SS dropping to 10 teams and having a full and away?
Thoughts on 10 teams?
Who would the 10 teams be?
  • Included in that they referenced a club State of Origin, best club players playing for the state of origin.
Thats when the first bullet point made me think hey this could be good.
With the SS already on FTA this could then bring in QLD.

^^^^^ thanks sidelineview.
15 of those 29 are from the highschool system.
Who is to say that talent isnt still in the highschool system.
  • Greg Inglis - Brisbane's Wavell State High School
  • Cameron Smith - Marsden State High School
  • Israel Folau - Marsden State High School
I coud go and look for more names but work calls.

Half of that great team from public schools!
And yes it makes sense that talented players would still be attending public high schools but they are not playing rugby.
Has AFL infiltrated the public school system as well?
I know the answer is yes but to what extent?
I'll try to find time to research this.

Harking back to those good old days when did the public high schools stop playing a mid week rugby comp and why did it stop?

Obviously there has been a lot of ground lost by rugby at the grassroots level but there's no time like the present to start getting it back.

Easier said than done.

I have no doubt the talent is still there but players are going to the code that is working.

I see Wallaby Camps.
Tahs's visits.
On facebook, and they are all held at Private Schools.

Simple but true: "the code/s that is/are working"

Maybe the reason coaching clinics are not being held at public schools is because they no longer play rugby.

Again, more research is needed (unless someone here can enlighten) but those schools that used to play rugby are now only catering for league, soccer and AFL.

I'll use the example of Matraville high again. They're a league school now.

It's 1969. I am watching CAS play CHS at Cranbrook.
CAS winger breaks away down the sideline. 50 meters to go.
Fastest player in the CAS team. No-one in front of him.
Big brute of a CHS breakaway starts to chase him.
Quickly overtakes him. Shuddering tackle from behind. Winger can't continue with the game.
The CHS breakaway? Steve Knight.

Whilst some of my rose-coloured memories may not meet an objective analysis of that incident, I still yearn for an effective program in 2018 which will uncover our next iteration of CHS rugby stars.

Matraville became a sports high so it could get some more money.
The roosters train there, under 20's or whaterever it is now.
Souths use south Sydney high.
Most kids at Matraville have nothing to do with league, it's a very challenging school that is doing some great work. Sport is a means to support the school but not really a major focus.

Geez, there's some old b.........s on.this thread.

I remember when a lot of kids in the South Sydney district would play league on the weekends, would play league for their schools in the South Sydney knockout and if they won that would play in the State knockout.

But also play rugby in the midweek High School comp.

League dominated but rugby still had a place.

I also remember the Wallabies playing Argentina at the SCG (year?) with Hugo Porter playing 10 against Mark Ella.
Porter had the biggest pass you've ever seen and Ella snapped a field goal on the half way mark and 5 metres in from touch. Freakish.

What if they didnt play rugby at Matraville High in those days?

I've heard a strategic plan that isolates 20 schools and no others???
All of these 20 schools are Private Schools that already play rugby???

So given the above, i.e. the schools already doing the work and playing rugby.

What work is being done to grow our game, or are we simply leaving it to these 20 schools to do the job for us and hope another code isnt prepared to work a little harder than we are.

Seriously success comes from planning and work.
Don't leave it for someone else to do.

Sign of the decline of our game...

Walk round Punchbowl Boys Hall and you can see the past NSW reps that attended, lots of rugby boys in 60's/70's.
Now a few of the islander kids play but most only care about the doggies.
