I like to watch

So Easts can't make the playoffs and Uni, Norths, Southern and Wicks are in and so should Eastwood be assuming they beat Gordon next week. Manly need to beat Norths and hope Wicks beat the Rats to beat the Rats into the 6. Although BPs may complicate things a bit and Manly have the advantage of 1 extra win than the Rats if they finish on equal competition points. Have I got it right?
For some reason you haven't contemplated that Woods,Rats & Marlins(with a bonus point) all might win.
Leaving Wicks high & dry :)

I think that the Wicks are quite safe. The Marlins will need to play at a level that they haven't be able to find in the previous 17 rounds to win with a 4 try bonus point. Still, anything is possible, Norths might go to the wrong ground.

Eastwood can only catch Randwick on 61 points (assuming Randwick lose) and as Eastwood only have 10 wins (11 maybe after next week) they will miss out as Wicks already have 12 wins and my understanding is that the team with most wins is used first to split ties before points difference.

Is that correct HJ?

If Woods, Rats and Marlins all win Woods will miss the playoffs.

2016 Gregor George Cup (Club Championship) Watch:
(after Round 17)

There are a maximum of 215 points available to a club each week, based on all 7 club teams winning with a 4 try BP and the target to win is >3000 points which was achieved by 3 clubs in 2014 and the 2015 winner was on 2905 points. In 2014 the difference between 1st and 2nd was only 33 points, with 3rd only 52 points further back. In 2015 there was only 49 points between 1st and 2nd, with 3rd place 113 points further back.

Sydney University, 2904 points
Randwick, 2614 points
Northern Suburbs, 2540 points*
Eastwood, 2468 points
Eastern Suburbs, 2404 points
Southern Districts, 2297 points
Warringah, 2220 points
Manly, 2108 points*
Gordon, 1182 points*
Parramatta, 1104 points*
West Harbour, 781 points
Penrith, 154 points

How the Club Championship table is calculated.
The competition points from the individual competitions are multiplied by the following factors and then added together.
First Grade - 15
Second Grade - 8
Third Grade - 5
Fourth Grade - 4
Colts 1 - 6
Colts 2 - 3
Colts 3 - 2

The 49 point difference between Gold and Silver in 2015 could have been made up from an extra 3 BP in Shute Shield and an extra BP in 4th Grade, or an extra victory with a BP in 2nd Grade and an extra BP in Colts 1 and Colts 2.

* Result from M2B v Shoremen in Colts 1, Colts 2 & Colts 3, and Highlanders v MMM in Colts 2 & Colts 3 to come.

2016 Club Champions
Sydney University have a lead of 290 over Randwick. Even if Sydney University lose all games without any bonus points and Randwick do the opposite, they can not lose the 2016 Club Championship.

The race for 2nd will be close. Norths have another potential 55 points from deferred Colts fixtures to make up which would place them on 2595, and in third place by only 19 points. Round 18 is Randiwix v Rats and Shoremen v MMM. No sure thing for both clubs.

Finals Crystal Ball
After round 17 there is some clarity to the finals shape, however not too many would have predicted the shape of the Shute Shield Ladder at this stage of the season before Round 1.

While 52 Competition points seems to be the traditional requirement to make the final 6, given the results so far this season it looks like teams will need around 60 points to comfortably be in the running for Finals.

Looking at the run home to see who the contenders really are:
Sydney University 64 points. To come: Parramatta.
Northern Suburbs, 63 points. To come: Manly.
Southern Districts, 63 points. To come: Eastern Suburbs.
Randwick, 61 points. To come: Warringah.
Warringah, 58 points. To come: Randwick.
Manly 57 points. To come: Northern Suburbs.
Eastwood, 56 points. To come: Gordon.
Eastern Suburbs, 52 points. To come: Southern Districts.

Parramatta (32), West Harbour (28), Gordon (14) and Penrith (2) are out of the running.

Using previous results and BP allocations (as fraught with danger that would be), as the results for Round 18, the finals contenders should be:

1. Northern Suburbs, 68 points (14 wins)
2. Sydney University, 68 points (13 wins)
3. Southern Districts, 65 points
4. Randwick 63 points (12 wins)
5. Warringah, 63 points (11 wins)
6. Eastwood, 61 points

7. Manly, 59 points
8. Eastern Suburbs, 57 points

Rule 8.2
In the event of two or more Clubs being equal on Competition points at the conclusion of the minor premiership competition, the Minor Premiership or any position in the respective competition table will be finalised by applying the following sequence:
1. The most number of wins;
2. The least number of losses;
3. The highest positive difference between actual points scored ‘for’ and points scored ‘against’
4. The highest points scored ‘for
5. The highest number of tries
6. The least number of proven offences as determined by the judiciary for that grade in that season
7. If at the end of this process two teams are still equal a playoff shall be conducted prior to the commencement of the finals series

Rule 33.1
Finals Series
Week 1 QF
Game A - 1st v 6th
Game B - 2nd v 5th
Game C - 3rd v 4th

Week 2 SF
Game D Highest Ranked Winner v Highest Ranked Loser
Game E 2nd Ranked Winner v 3rd Ranked Winner

Week 3 Grand Final

I think that the Wicks are quite safe. The Marlins will need to play at a level that they haven't be able to find in the previous 17 rounds to win with a 4 try bonus point. Still, anything is possible, Norths might go to the wrong ground.

The inability to close out the close games has cost MMM'S . Where's my mate DB ? Dave you are the Marlins guru what say you in the face of even our own deserting us ?

BTW if last years champs 4's miss finals footy it may all go back to a major mass subs gaffe against Souths in round 1 where what was a winning lead was given up by the best of intentions in giving all bench players a run but that club rugby:)

Now Galah - there from 4s watching the uncontested scrums.

Like the Woods i think we are one of 3 (now 4 teams given Tahs aren't looking good) teams that can go all the way - have to pack boots in the morning and turn up.

Not deserting the ship, I just know how fast and how far the ship is going. Still on board for the long haul, unfortunately 2016 won't be the year.:)

What games have you been watching Dave?
Even if the Marlins fluke a semi spot, they are canon fodder.
They are literally20-30 points weaker than last year.
It's possible that all 4 grades will miss the finals, when was the last time that occurred?
Hard to believe any senior coaches will have a role there next year.
Unless it's a cunning 5 year plan to dominate the Kentwell cup :)

I have watched ever game and apart from the rats game we were in the position to win every game.
Tells me the boys can play, just need to play 80.

Outsiders perspective from being there yesterday whilst that 2nd grade side looked like it had some very good returning players something didn't seem quite right throughout the grades some changes are perhaps needed if they are continue Manly's high performance of the last five seasons. Is there much coming through from Colts next year as there won't be much in 2018 by the looks of it.

Are Manly still well resourced as they generally had a knack of getting quality imports the last few seasons? Change of culture regarding recruiting those type of players?

But they have proved over and over this season, that they can't play 80.
They won't be getting Lucas,Palu,Hodge,Neville etc etc to hide their deficiencies this year.

They showed zero starch v the Rats.
it was a must win game in terms of the ladder, a big local derby a few weeks before the finals, and they were insipid.
They never fired a shot.
Apart from the Riff,it was by far the easiest game the Rats played all year.
Time to stack the lower grades and hope to get something out of the year.

Done that

As another season draws to a close,it is worth looking at the state of our game & where it is headed in the future.
In a year when we see the Wallabies beaten 3-0 by England,& only the Brumbies likely to be involved in the Super 18 play offs,it behoves us to examine what is happening at a grass roots level,& how this is possibly influencing standards now & in all likelihood, into the future.
The Shute Shield historically has been the major competition in Australian Rugby,& the source of a large proportion of the players to represent at an international level.
Thus, it should be obvious that it remains important to maintain & expand this competition to it's greatest potential if Rugby is going to survive in this country.
In respect to the SS, once again we see Parramatta,West Harbour & Penrith, occupying the bottom of the respective competitions & Club Championship tables.
Other sports are making great inroads in the west of Sydney, while Rugby stagnates , or effectively retreates.
It is a recurring subject of complaint & concern on these pages each year ,& whilst most contributors have an allegiance to a particular club,I would hope that ,without exception, all would put their love of Rugby & desire to see it flourish ,ahead of any club connection. Because of this,I am astounded to learn that the SRU,who purport to represent all clubs & followers of our sport, are reportedly about to allocate this years SS grand final to North Sydney oval at the request & inducement of the local council there, the latter who would provide no benefits to grass roots rugby. Irrespective of the suitability of North Sydney oval to accommodate this event, which is itself questionable, surely they cannot be blind to the consequences & implications of removing this event from the West of Sydney, how this is perceived by the clubs in this neglected catchment area, who feel abandoned anyway, & struggle to find some relevance to the competition & promotion of our sport. Whilst the final decision will not be announced until next week ,is it too much to hope that an altruistic view of our sport & it's future, might prevail over the self interests of a few?
