Law 20.1 Forming a Scrum
e) Number of players: eight. A scrum must have eight players from each team. All eight players must stay bound to the scrum until it ends. Each front row must have three players in it, no more and no less. Two locks must form the second row.

As I'm the person who raised the issue I would really like to know why when I arrived at the ground at about 10:15am Souths had aleady notified Wicks that the scrums would be uncontested. That explanation needs to come from someone at Souths.

Sure it's only 4th grade, but the result was close (25-19 to Souths), both teams are fighting to make the playoffs and the fact remains that Souths won the game as the result of a try scored when they had 9 backs (illegally IMO) agst 6. So in spite of the OHS issues, and why the game started with uncontested scrums, Souths cheated (again IMO) by not packing 8 in the scrum and the ref let them get away with it.

Old Colt, I'd be happy for you to find out from the powers-that-be at your club why the scrums were uncontested and what their explanation is for packing only 6 in the scrum. If there is a valid reason I'll be happy to pull my head in, but none has been forthcoming so far and it was 6 days ago.

I'm not sure why it's my job to find out what happened? My club, yes, but as I was at Coogee that day with Colts I had no knowledge of the game beyond hearing the result. I simply objected to the farcical assumption that Souths had cheated with the uncontested scrums and stacking the backline - as I said earlier, blame the ref for not being on top of things but give the 'Souths are cheats' nonsense a rest - rather you should think about the attitude of some in your own club who are guilty of doing things against the spirit of the game - such as the coaches who singled out Souths players for sustained personal abuse throughout the 1sts Colts match at Forshaw a few weeks ago.

I'm surprised non contested scrums aren't semi regular events in 4's.
It's not unusual to be scratching for numbers this time of year.
I'm also surprised to hear they were able to turn numbers into a try.
It's something that many in higher grades struggle to do.

Spot on. Scouring pubs on Friday night, ringing subbies, pulling in some favours, getting old players out of retirement for "just one more game"; all the usual selection techniques of a successful 4th grade coach.
Getting 15 plus reserves can be challenging, let alone finding 3 players who are trained, capable, and willing to play in the front row before noon.
It's not easy.

No excuses, and a loss is a loss, but in all fairness, the last two of those losses were nail biters with scores of 22-24 and 21-20.

The MMM'S despite the score line had to battle hard today. Gordon dominated field position and their pack against (I believe) a first choice Marlins pack were more than competitive . Equation simple for MMM's next week in 1's to 4's is win every game.

The match ups in the final round are tantalising.

Re Woodies it has been coming but have they left it too late?

Re Wicks - Marlins are hoping for a turn around at Coogee next week but the Rats will more than turn up. So after the day's results, to quote a speaker before the boat race at Manly this afternoon "who are the pretenders now " ?

In the TV game today rats v Easts, referee was diabolical. Some seriously sub-standard officiating. On the positive side Josh Holmes certainly can find the try line, 4 tries today in a massive game from the scrumhalf.

Luke got the heart, Josh got the speed. Josh has sensational abilities, but he has always been totally allergic to the physical aspect of the game.


He would be a sensation in touch rugby.

Talking of referees performances I am finding it difficult to understand the difference in interpretation between Shute shield and super rugby.
Lying over the ball at the ruck and handling on the ground seems OK in shield but not at super level.m

So Easts can't make the playoffs and Uni, Norths, Southern and Wicks are in and so should Eastwood be assuming they beat Gordon next week. Manly need to beat Norths and hope Wicks beat the Rats to beat the Rats into the 6. Although BPs may complicate things a bit and Manly have the advantage of 1 extra win than the Rats if they finish on equal competition points. Have I got it right?
