2016 Gregor George Cup (Club Championship) Watch:
(after Round 15)

There are a maximum of 215 points available to a club each week, based on all 7 club teams winning with a 4 try BP and the target to win is >3000 points which was achieved by 3 clubs in 2014 and the 2015 winner was on 2905 points. In 2014 the difference between 1st and 2nd was only 33 points, with 3rd only 52 points further back. In 2015 there was only 49 points between 1st and 2nd, with 3rd place 113 points further back.

Sydney University, 2533 points
Randwick, 2360 points
Eastern Suburbs, 2177 points
Northern Suburbs, 2170 points
Eastwood, 2093 points
Southern Districts, 1939 points*
Warringah, 1935 points
Manly, 1912 points
Gordon, 1080 points*
Parramatta, 935 points
West Harbour, 773 points
Penrith, 112 points

How the Club Championship table is calculated.
The competition points from the individual competitions are multiplied by the following factors and then added together.
First Grade - 15
Second Grade - 8
Third Grade - 5
Fourth Grade - 4
Colts 1 - 6
Colts 2 - 3
Colts 3 - 2

The 49 point difference between Gold and Silver in 2015 could have been made up from an extra 3 BP in Shute Shield and an extra BP in 4th Grade, or an extra victory with a BP in 2nd Grade and an extra BP in Colts 1 and Colts 2.

WTF is happening at West Harbour?
261 - 61 across 4 grades today.
75 points in 1sts and 90 in 2nds, only the shorter game times kept the scores lower in 3s and 4s.
Wicks were good but you can only play as well as the opposition let you and Wests were pretty bloody ordinary to put it mildly.
Year of the west maybe but that obviously doesn't include the Emus or the Pirates.

All those people (myself included) who questioned why Simon Cron won the Catchpole Medal for Coach of the Year last year now have their answer --- he should probably win it this year as well!

Cheer up, Penrith next week

Well, believe it or not, if I had to choose a team to lose to, it would be Penriff. As I carefully explained to Mrs Wamberal last night, two losses in a season to Parramatta is actually a good thing for the game. A loss to the 'Riff would be even better!!

She turned her back and went to sleep.

What is happening at West Harbour? They were short of players yesterday and some seemed to lack interest. Mind you, quite a few backed up and played 2 games.
A win against the premiers then a loss by 65 points seems odd. Does the club have injury problems or something more nefarious?

Finals Crystal Ball
After round 15 the finals race should be clear, however not too many would have predicted the shape of the Shute Shield Ladder at this stage of the season before Round 1.

While 52 Competition points seems to be the traditional requirement to make the final 6, given the results so far this season it looks like teams will need around 60 points to comfortably be in the running for Finals.

Looking at the run home to see who the contenders really are:
Randwick, 56 points. To come: Southern Districts, Eastwood, Warringah.
Sydney University 54 points. To come: Eastern Suburbs, West Harbour, Parramatta.
Northern Suburbs, 53 points. To come: West Harbour, Parramatta, Manly.
Manly 52 points. To come: Warringah, Gordon, Northern Suburbs.
Southern Districts, 51 points. To come: Randwick, Penrith, Eastern Suburbs.
Warringah, 48 points. To come: Manly, Eastern Suburbs, Randwick.
Eastern Suburbs, 48 points. To come: Sydney University, Warringah, Southern Districts.
Eastwood, 46 points. To come: Penrith, Randwick, Gordon.

West Harbour, Parramatta, Gordon and Penrith are probably out of the running even if they win all their remaining games with a 4T BP.

Using Rounds 1-15 results and BP allocations (as fraught with danger that would be), as the results for Rounds 16-18, the finals contenders should be:

1. Northern Suburbs, 68 points (only play 1 of the top 6 contenders)
2. Sydney University, 64 points (play 1 top 6 contenders, & their Bogie team)
3. Manly, 64 points (play 2 top 6 contenders)
4. Randwick 63 points (play 3 of the top 6 contenders)
5. Southern Districts, 61 points (play 2 top 6 contenders)
6. Warringah, 59 points (play 3 of the top 6 contenders)

Eastwood, 56 points (play 1 top 6 contenders)
Eastern Suburbs, 55 points (Tough gig playing 3 top 6 contenders)

This is still looking too close to call with only 3 rounds to go. It looks like The Corporation, Shoremen, Hobbits , MMM and Randi-Wix will qualify with, Beasties, Woodies and Rats having an almighty scrap for the last finals slot.
