Beasties are the most ridiculous team in all of sport. Get pumped by mid-table teams and lose to shit teams. Then they compete very well vs the big guns. How many times in the past year have they beaten or gotten really close to Uni, Eastwood and Manly?? They got pumped vs Souths, Randwick, Norths.

The fuck is wrong with them? Different coach too.

I hear you.

^^^ so much for a dour draw with the boot of Byron Hodge being the difference between a loss and the draw.

^^^ so much for a dour draw with the boot of Byron Hodge being the difference between a loss and the draw.

Well it was 2 tries each with Hodge's 5 penalty goals and 2 conversions v 1 penalty and 1 conversion by Horwitz providing the winning margin. Uni dominated the set plays and played to the conditions more effectively than the Wicks. Wicks had a couple of good scoring opportunities early in the game but strong defensive scrummaging by Uni turned them away. The better team definitely won, but the penalty count was very high in Uni's favour.

Although it wouldn't have made any difference to the result there were at least 4 occasions in the 2nd half when the referee blew time off but the scoreboard clock kept running. I'd estimate at least 1.5 minutes were lost as the referee blew full time as soon as the hooter went. So much for the referee being the sole judge of time

Well called Coach. I beg to differ about the set pieces. Thought both sides had periods of ascendancy. Was very disappointed with the Wicks inability to keep the referee on side. He blew them off the park and I was baffled with some of the decisions - for example, 2 Randwick attacking scrums 10 metres from the Uni line get penalised??? That was pretty much the deal all night. Don't think Uni will trouble Manly or Eastwood this year unless they improve a lot.

That is Macca trying to keep the wicks under the radar, haven't seen them play yet but it reads like they are a young fast side, to beat them you will need to turn up ready to play and be a well drilled / oiled side with excellent defensive patterns and game focus.

Macca, I probably should have said that Uni seemed to win the critical scrums and lineouts, or received penalties from them.

Love yer work DB.;) Do you suggest the Wicks lost on purpose to stay under the radar?? Methinks you are trying to divert the competition favourite status away from the Mighty Manly Marlins...

Gordon had led at half time in the last four games only to lose by small margins in every game (3 of them less than 7). I put it down to the scrum and belief.

If we can fix the scrum this side could easily turn into a top 4 side considering some of the sides they have achieved these results are almost permanently top 4.

I agree. The set-piece has been a worry with the 3 top hookers injured/unavailable (Hobden, Goddard, Handlin) and top props Nick Fraser & Lefu Iaofo also injured. Gordon in a good place this year with plenty of depth and have still led at halftime despite this. I feel it's only a matter of time before the results start coming their way.

Yes Cropley is also out and Parfitt is playing in HK(not expected to return). Lawley has come in to the group though but still it seems to lack a lot of top end depth with all doing reasonably well in 2nd grade.

Fraser is probably the best though and is being missed the most.

Some talk of some overseas props in the mixer though which hopefully comes to fruition.

Re the mercy rule, it depends whether you are of the view that referees should have the discretion to call these matches over early eg 10 mins early. Maybe we could have a competition rule, that the game is over when a team reaches 100.
You'd be a brave ref to call a game off based on your discretion.

4/5 games last week with the margins a bit so-so. Tipping a draw was always a risky move.

Round 8 Tips
Eastern Suburbs v West Harbour. Beasties in close game with 4T BP, Pirates 2 BP.

Eastwood v Sydney University. The Corporations lucky run bubble is due to burst. Woodies by 10-15.

Parramatta v Gordon. Belly's Boys are overdue some chocolates. M2B by <7.

Randwick v Manly. Randi-Wix are always tough at home, but MMM have too much native cunning. MMM by 15+.

Southern Districts v Northern Suburbs. The Short Shoeless Ones from The Shire are genuine Finalist contenders. Time to get serious about their title tilt. Hobbits by 10-15.

Warringah v Penrith. Penrith continue to struggle, and like a good Guinness, they don't travel well. Rats by
35+.
