Done That - I am one of those hard working people at West Harbour and yes I confess I do love a moan. If Wests ever won the comp I don't know what I'd have to talk about! I quite enjoy being 'long suffering'. But I wouldn't miss a minute.

Thommo is away celebrating his retirement. In his place, Alan Cox has penned an analysis of the Mighty Two Blues performance against Manly on the weekend. Now published on the Club website. Shockingly, the report appears to be reasonably fair and balanced and as a consequence the Mighty Two Blues are considering whether Alan should continue :)

The comms in the Randwick game on saturday mentioned a few times that the Wests Tigers had showed some interest in Andrew Deegan the Randwick 15. Anyone heard anymore about this? He looked a real goer hope we are doing what we can to keep him in the game

Welcome to Gaggerland @David Mak. Good to have you aboard.

There was a bit of banter on the schoolboys thread last year from a poster that seemed to be posting rather frequently about a possible connection to Tigers for this lad on both the Tigers Loig forums and on Gaggerland. I forget the name of the poster, but I think they haven't posted for a while.

IIRC this may have been after the UK touring team had been announced but before they left. A tin foil hat wearer could think that it was a person connected with another fly half who was not selected to tour. You can get some rather desperate family members and associates on the internet doing some pretty sad things at times.

It seemed to have no real legs at the time. Some other posters were making claims about him dropping rugby to concentrate on an elite cyclist development programme at that same time. There may or may not have been some truth in that. Time has shown that he appears to have decided on rugby, regardless of whatever truth there was in the Tigers or cycling rumours.

Maybe the ABC TV interns and research staff read Gaggerland for their "research".

I trudged down the peninsula to catch some sunday footy. I thought it was a tough encounter. I think that Manly got pretty lucky. Only got meat pies when Parra had blokes in the bin. The ref was good to manly I would say. Questionable calls and questionable binnings all around though.

That game reminded a bit of origin, lots of niggle, ref lost control however unfortunately here he attempted to gain control by dealing out cards like it's the casino.
Gotta say as a bit of a fan of the 2 Blues having been born closer to Granville than the sea the suggestion Manly got lucky is a big call Backrow. The 2 Blues came , they saw , they scrapped and spoiled but they were never going to conquer (in both grades) . That said Blakey's apparent spray on the ref (see MMM's match reports) obviously goes to common ground.

Thought this was appropriate, considering that there always seems to be a lot of potential referees on this forum:

NSW Rugby Referees are experiencing extreme difficulty appointing to all games in the Suburban calendar. We barely have enough referees to cover all of the fixtures from week to week. As the season has progressed we have had referees double up to cover two matches.
Consequently we now have 25 referees injured in any given week and this is compounding the doubling-up trend. The situation has reached a critical point where we need more referees to cover all games.
Clubs will be affected by having to provide their own referees to some games. Tim Richards will notify you if this occurs. Clubs are reminded that the minimum requirement to referee in NSW is SmartRugby. If you do need to appoint your own referee do not go pursuing one from your local district association as they are experiencing the same shortage of referees.
How Your Club Can Assist
To try to solve this problem in the short term we will soon be running a Referee Course to qualify some new referees. We ask you to send people along to that course. Course date and rego details soon.
We need you to help us market refereeing to your members (and friends, parents and spectators). The upside for you is that ultimately we will again cover all of your games. We believe retired players (or players who have an injury which precludes contact) make good referees.
Referee Week
As part of our program to recruit more referees, a public awareness program called ‘Referee Week’ will run from 30 Jun to 6 Jul. Some activities already planned are:
• Referees to attend club trainings in Referee week. All referees have been strongly encouraged to attend their local club training to put a personal face on refereeing and to reinforce the need for referee recruitment so that all games are covered.
• All 1st Grade Referees on 28 Jun and 5 Jul will be tasked to speak to the issue in post-game speeches (where these occur) to outline the need and to promote the course.
I will keep everyone abreast of any developments and new initiatives as they occur. The main aim of this activity is to generate new recruits to attend the Referee Course after Referee Week.
This is a critical issue. We can’t cover all the games and clubs are going to be affected. Help us to help you.

Note this was sent out to Suburban clubs, but is equally appropriate.

Referees week , fantastic idea.

We love to hate them , but our game can't run without them.

The refs are doing it because they have a passion for rugby.

Keep up the good work,

It's a double edged sword, Gaggerlanders......

Until Coaches INSRUCT their players to suck it up & get on with it, until Club management INSTRUCT their Coaches to suck it up and get on with it, until Parents & Spectators LEARN to suck it up & just enjoy watching the rugby on display, nothing will change IMHO.

Most referees are out there trying their level best, which for some is obviously not enough. They are expected to be international quality & never make a (genuine) mistake. Most referees are only human............

Doesn't matter whether it's the 13F's or 1st Grade SS, Subbies or Colts - they same code of conduct applies - and is openly flaunted every week. I witnessed some 1st Grade Colts coaches giving a ref & A/R an absolute gobful last weekend.....because they were frustrated about a certain issue - that in essence was a non-event.

And I admit to venting my frustration with some referees too - so I am not immune to my own human frailties.

In the end - if The Adminsitration want more referees - they need to make it an enjoyable enough experience that people actually WANT to go and referee - and not go out expecting to receive some ill-informed nut job passing comments on the Laws of Rugby that they quite clearly don't understand in the first place.

Most referees - in my experience - are pretty "tough" people - and don't mind instructive comment - AFTER the match. And a bit of fun commentary along the way goes a long way too !

It can be a rewarding experience...............

Wednesday rant over.

I don't know whether I've mellowed with age, but I have to say I've been pretty impressed with the standard of refs over the last few years and the Wicks have been struggling so there's been plenty of opportunities to blame the ref for our misfortune. I get really pissed off with spectators abusing refs from 50 metres away from the play. Just learn to accept that refs are doing their best and if you're not prepared to try it yourself then you just have to accept what you get. My only minor complaint is that international refs when they come back to the SS are too pedantic, I think they assume the eyes of the IRB are on them all the time.

All players, administrators, coaches, and spectators need to understand that without referees, there can be no game.

I grew up in an era when we actually had three cheers for the ref at the end of every game. Nobody, but nobody spoke to the referee, and the referee certainly did not talk to individual players. They were above the fray. That, in my humble opinion, is how it should be.

Referees are a bit like judges in a court of law, and should be accorded the same degree of respect.

Wamberal, I agree with you, but I learnt in the army that there are 2 types of respect: one which comes automatically with the pips on the shoulder and the second which must be earned by your actions. Refs are certainly automatically entitled to the first, but like the rest of us have to earn the second.

The current practice (imported from league?) of calling players by their names is not helpful IMO.

The pressure is right off the refs at the moment for mine. Lot of lopsided SS games coming up in the run to the finals.

Earning the second comes with laying down the law if not in pre game chats then first 10, not putting up with players who then want to then push the laws of the game (in that context) and most importantly consistency of decision making . Agree a gig made tougher by trying to be players' best friend - first names are right out . Calling blue number 6 , green number 9 etc does maintains appropriate distance in my view . But I grew up with spare the rod spoil the child!

Good thinking Bomber, let's give the refs a cane to bring the miscreants into line :D

^^^ Does that mean that they will no longer need their seeing eye dog on the oval? :)

I hope not -- I've always liked seeing a few canines at the rugby. Adds to the village atmosphere as well as boosting the crowd numbers. Some of them make a lot more sense in their comments about the game than their human counterparts as well. ;)
