Obviously it will take about a decade to have a full effect with Uni also not being as dominant in 1st Grade Colts, looking at it less of the representative players of last year's schoolboys sides have gone to Uni. This will most probably lead to Uni in the future having a reduction of the 30 odd Provincial contracted players they have now.

Massive generalisation but is this because there is a higher percentage of Islanders/CHS kids in the rep teams and these guys are less likely to go on through the uni/college old boy system.

I would disagree with your first comment about a higher percentage of CHS kids, these numbers are actually dwindling, let's just say I know quite a few who were embaressed at the side Combined High Schools put out last season.

But yes I suppose you are correct the blokes that are playing CHS should be playing Colts/Grade to be a chance of being selected.

I have bolded the players who I am pretty sure are GPS/CAS schoolkids. While some of them started at different clubs you would have to say their natural habitat is at Uni.

Local rag has an inventory of Souths new signings for 2010:

1- Stefano Hunt (10/outside back)
2- Radike Samo (Back row)
3- Ita Vaea
4- Nifo Nifo (2nd row)
5- Sita Tuamani
6- Tetera Faulkner (Prop)
7- Josh Gamgee (10)
8- Nicky Price (fullback)
9- Sisa Waqa
10- Gareth Morton (Centre)
11- Sam Zlatevski (Hooker)

Then there are the three tah players to come back (Horne, Palmer and Douglas) plus Brackin Henry (Brumbies) and Josh Tatupu (Force) and thats a run on team with a spares. Probably explains why they have won all 4 grades twice this season. There is also the (vague) promise from a few weeks ago for some fringe Reds players to show up at some stage.

In other news, The Mac Company (Kevin Maloney) has committed supporting the club until atleast end of 2011.

Does anyone know what Norths offered the Parra players that kept getting mentioned on Saturday?

Norths aren't as well funded as a few years ago when they had quite a few good years(had guys like Ben Alexander etc). Probably due to the Cabana Bar not being as new on the market and not quite as popular anymore.

Obviously a few incentives would have been included in the deal & you would have thought a guaranteed first grade position by the looks of it. Borg has a bit of talent I thought though.

topo

Cyril Towers (30)
Yep, he was.
He has been 1sts Colts 5/8 for the last couple of years and has been in the Aus 7s squad. Last week was his first game back after a serious ankle injury. Dan Kelly played 5/8 last week but injured his knee and is out for a while. Uni are really struggling with a lot of injuries as well as all the players on S14 duty. It will make for an interesting game.

Interesting changes for Gordon's lineup, I suspect primarily brought about by injury. Craig Thomas the captain gone and replaced by Ma'a. Hercus back in at 10 and Bubba Perry keeping his spot at 6 over Dud and Pauli. Can only assume that the Tahs have told Gordon to keep Mr Roodt fresh otherwise he should be in from the start.

See you at the BBQ.

For Gordon
- DHP has been called up by the Force and jumped on a plane to Africa yesterday
- Craig Thomas is out for 3 weeks hence Rodney Ma'a gets his chance, Mike Hercus reclaims the captaincy
- The Dud will start in 2nd grade and get a full 80 minutes, must not have done enough in his 30 minutes last week :nta:
- Randell Kamea who had been playing in 2nd grade on the wing has been called up to the Fijian sevens team and has left for Scotland
- Couple of new faces to the club this week, Scott Sutherland a second rower from Scotland with pretty big wraps will start in 3rd grade and a new welsh halfback will start in 4s both will be looking to move up the grades fairly quickly

Does that mean Mark Preston will start in his place?

Very strange move. Will he also be bracketed on the bench for the 1sts?

With the new internationals starting in the lower grades and the crowds that will no doubt attract, I'd better get the BBQ fired up early :lmao:

I haven't heard but that would be the logical replacement.

He will be on the bench for 1st grade, no fresh reserves will be carried this week.

One other newcomer I forgot to mention is Jason Peseta, former Norths first grader who played last week off the bench in 2s and 3s will start in 2s this week.

TG,

Where has Peseta been playing, if he has been playing he would be a very decent pick up(how old is he)?

I see Vinny Byrne not in any side this weekend is he injured or has he spat the dummy?

Can someone answer this for me :

Phoenix Battye is counted as a NSW rep in this squad even though from the ACT if I recall correctly - no problems with that.

But apparently according to the link below(dated 1/5) he is a Brumbies Academy member.

NSW Rugby Website has this though :

http://brumbies.com.au/act.rugby/page/58244

Phoenix Battye
Position: Lock
Born: 28.09.90
Club: Sydney Uni

He hasn't been named in a Sydney Uni team this season? Anyone know what is going on?

If he is a NSW Academy member why does he get special exemptions to play in the ACT comp?

Watched Gordon v Woodies

Eastwood 31 - Gordon 20

Pretty disappointing performance by Gordon

Hercus certainly doesn't have the pace to trouble an opposition, my hope at the start of the season was that Gordon had got a 5/8 who could lead them into battle against the real strong clubs, more so he was trying to kick his way to victory.

Keil played as DHP was with the Force.

McCaffrey was good for the Woods, Alexander showed some fantastic strength at stages. Bennetts & Grant continue to impress me as well.

2nd Grade -

Eastwood 32 - Gordon 28

All I am going to say is having Peseta, Tuala & Dud Roodt in your backrow most people would back you in a second grade this Gorodn pack was considerably larger than the Eastwood pack, larger is where it ended though Gordon need to do something about the lack of work rate especially Peseta & Tuala who run too high with the ball as well.

Preston impressed me though had a reasonable game at the back - a game Gordon shouldn't have lost.

Ellis James the Eastwood fetcher as well as Mick Snowden & Chris Donnelly all had fine games.

1st grade results.

Sydney University 29 v Northern Suburbs 10
Manly 29 v West Harbour 30
Gordon 20 v Eastwood 31
Penrith 21 v Warringah 20
Randwick 29 v Southern Districts 41
Parramatta 5 v Eastern Suburbs 125

Wow, go Penriff !!

As an Easts fan, hard to enjoy that result. Parra have given us some great battles in the past. May they live to do so again.

Wests beat Manly at Manly, Penrith beat Warringah and Souths over Randwick at Coogee. What is going on?

Peter Sullivan (51)
This Southern Districts outfit is looking very good, but the real test is always when clubs get some of the Super 14 players. I've got a feeling Uni might be seeing a lot of Phil Waugh and Barnes, not to mention Tommy and Hangers.

topo

Cyril Towers (30)
And Dennis, Caldwell, Charles, Inman, McAlman, Yanuyanutawa, Tilse and maybe Weeks. McCutcheon will be around but playing 7s. Davidson should be back next week and Trist has had 2 games in 2nds after his knee recon. While they have been out young blokes like Roberson,Ryan, Carter, McDuling, Jones, Bredenham, Foley, Rokobaro, Hodge and Betham have been quietly getting better. Don't worry about Uni, they'll be back.
