Not that I remember, but may have been true. Don't think any resentment there from my understanding just the oppurtunities and financial oppurtunities(possibly through scholarships etc) Uni offered.

You can't underestimate this with Uni even recruiting QLD Schoolboys as a part of their scholarship program.

Uni would have close to twenty through the Colts/Grade System who were Gordon Juniors...

I mean Charles, Tom Carter & Luke are all Wahroonga Juniors.

?Tom Carter? I think Young Yabbies would have a greater claim on him.
PS: please note that I am biting my tongue about the anti Uni paranoia that is once again rearing it's ugly head.

Or maybe they wouldn't? Tom went to high school at Kings, Turramurra High & Knox?

I would have thought the fact that very few 18-30 yr olds live in Gordon would be the reason for a lot of these movements. The thought of driving 40 mins before and after training, $60 cab fares from the rugby club to the late night venue etc would be enough for m to change clubs.

Talking about Gordon legends, my favourite would have to be Don Logan - okay I am showing my age. But Logan was a very good first grade halfback, and a Wallaby. He ended his career at prop in fourth grade. Great club man.

Long Lunch Logan. He got me once at a rugby function, took me a week to recover. A legend in his own lifetime!

Round 4 - Saturday 1 May 2010

NORTHERN SUBURBS (3rd) v MANLY (4th) at North Sydney Oval (ABC TV Game, 3:10pm)
Northern Suburbs have been one of the surprise packets of the 2010 season to date and will be looking to keep their undefeated record intact when they host Manly at North Sydney Oval in the ABC TV Game of the Day.

The Shoremen have a host of experienced campaigners with the likes of Chris Burnett, Steve Evans, Chris Moore, James Lew and Nick Lah playing a big part in the red and black's campaigns over recent years. However it is the addition of a number of newcomers including Nathan Rickard, Seti Tafua and a trio of former Two Blues in Scott Podmore, Junior Kolikata and Ben Borg who have helped take the team to a higher level in 2010.

Their work will be cut out on Saturday against a Manly team boasting loads of talent. The Marlins only slip-up this season was a late one-point loss to Southern Districts in round two, however a demolition of Parramatta in round one and a tight last start win over Warringah in the local derby show Manly have what it takes to again be a leading player this year.
Northern Suburbs: 1. Nathan Rickard, 2. Scott Podmore, 3. Nick Lah [c]; 4. Rory Walton, 5. Tai Marsters; 6. Seti Tafua, 7. Carlos Blanco, 8. Mat Lamont; 9. Steve Evans, 10. Chris Burnett; 11. Cam Crawford, 12. Chris Moore, 13. James Lew, 14. Junior Kolikata; 15. Ben Borg.

EASTERN SUBURBS (1st) v EASTWOOD (5th) at Woollahra Oval (3:00pm)
Eastern Suburbs have stamped themselves as genuine premiership contenders in the opening three weeks of the competition and will be looking to add further weight to those credentials when they meet Eastwood at Woollahra Oval.

The Beasts methodically dismantled Randwick in the second half last week, with HSBC Junior Waratahs scrumhalf Brendan McKibbin showing the form which saw him lead Brothers to the Brisbane premiership in 2009. Question marks were raised after round one when Easts conceded 39 points to Penrith in a high-scoring encounter, however convincing victories against West Harbour and Randwick have made the rest of the competition sit up and take notice.

Eastwood however will be backing themselves to take the game to Easts on their trip to Woollahra. The Woods have scored bonus point wins in both of their home games this year, however only managed six points in their only away fixture to Norths. They will need to improve that away record if they are to become contenders in 2010 and will be hoping to move up a gear on Saturday.

Eastern Suburbs: 1. Ofa Fainga'anuku, 2. Jessie Davidson, 3. Rob McMickan; 4. Phil Mathers, 5. Matt McGann; 6. Ed Brenac, 7. Will Brock, 8. Pauliasi Taumeopeau; 9. Brendan McKibbin, 10. Ben Ward; 11. John Collignon, 12. Tim Corcoran, 13. Petero Satogo, 14. Damon Anderson; 15. Patrick Dellit.

SOUTHERN DISTRICTS (2nd) v PENRITH (8th) at Forshaw Rugby Park (3:00pm)
After good off-season recruiting for the past two seasons there were high expectations on Southern Districts at the start of 2010 and they will be looking to keep fulfilling them at home to Penrith.

The Rebels sit in second place as one of three undefeated teams and will look to maintain that perfect run from the opening month of the competition. Recent years have proven Souths have little trouble matching it up front with most opponents but the question mark has been on their ability to score points against the top teams. However three wins over three 2009 semi-finalists have put an end to that talk for now.

They face a Penrith side which has lethal finishing power but waited until the final stages to score their first win of the season last Saturday against Parramatta. If the Emus pack can achieve parity with the Rebels this weekend, the battle of the backlines will be a joy to watch.

Southern Districts: 1. Tetera Faulkner, 2. Sam Zlatevski, 3. John Ulugia; 4. Nifo Nifo, 5. Sitaleki Timani; 6. Matt Trouville, 7. Callum Reilly, 8. Ita Luitiene Vaea; 9. Nathan Sievert, 10. Josh Gamgee [c]; 11. Ben Connelly, 12. Gareth Morton, 13. Ben Schreiber, 14. Tom Korio; 15. Nicky Price.
Penrith: 1. Dave Coventry, 2. Matt Borg, 3. Toa Asa; 4. Johnny Smith, 5. Saviriano Shaw; 6. Winnie Paulo, 7. Junior To'o, 8. Chris Aho; 9. Sikuti Vunipola, 10. Gavin Duncan; 11. Leon Bott, 12. Stan Tuionuku, 13. Dave Alo, 14. Filipo Toala; 15. Luke Cross [c].

WARRINGAH (10th) v SYDNEY UNIVERSITY (7th) at Pittwater Rugby Park (3:00pm)
Warringah and Sydney University find themselves in unfamiliar positions after three rounds with just one win between them going into the fourth match of the season.

The Rats have managed just three competition points from a draw with Gordon in round two and a narrow last round loss to Manly last weekend, and need the likes of Luke Holmes, Beau Robinson, Michael Lipman and Haig Sare to step up this weekend against a University team also keen to get on the front foot.

The Students welcome back Super 14 squad members Jerry Yanuyanutawa and Luke Jones, however the rest of the squad is stacked with talent spread across a number of Academies and Sevens programs. A round two win over Parramatta is Uni's only success so far this season and anything short of victory on Saturday will keep the five-time defending champions in the bottom half of the table after a month of competition.

Warringah: 1. Dan Raymond, 2. Luke Holmes, 3. Dan Barnard; 4. Scott Flint, 5. Brent Murphy; 6. Beau Robinson, 7. Michael Lipman [c], 8. Trevor Richardson; 9. Sam Hutcherson, 10. Brock McGarity; 11. Ed Doyle, 12. Haig Sare, 13. Will Sare, 14. Greg White; 15. Maurice Kennedy.
Sydney University: 1. Jerry Yanuyanutawa, 2. Ben Roberts, 3. Paddy Ryan; 4. Sam Carter, 5. Dave McDuling; 6. Adam Campbell, 7. Trent Dyer, 8. Luke Jones; 9. Eddie Bredenhann, 10. Dan Kelly; 11. Nick Edwards, 12. Alex Rokobaro, 13. Michael Hodge, 14. Ed Jenkins; 15. Peter Betham.
Referee: James Leckie

WEST HARBOUR (11th) v GORDON (9th) at Concord Oval (3:00pm)
West Harbour and Gordon are two of only four sides yet to claim a victory after three rounds of competition and both teams will come out fired up at Concord Oval determined to keep their opponent winless.

The Pirates have been somewhat disappointing so far in 2010, however they can take some comfort in the fact their losses have come to sides ranked first, third and fifth on the competition ladder. There is too much talent for this team not to excel soon, so expect the Pirates to put in an improved performance this week.

Similarly, the Highlanders are desperate to claim their first win since the departure of ex-coach Lachlan Fear. A round two draw with Warringah was a missed opportunity for Gordon, however last week's tie with Norths was even more disappointing given they conceded a try on full-time to drop a five-point lead.

West Harbour: 1.Campese Ma'afu, 2. Will Hannam, 3. Vaughan Lomax; 4. David Fungalei, 5. Steve Mafi; 6. James King, 7. Mark Porpiglia, 8. Pelea Afu; 9. Jeremy Su'a, 10. Jai Ayoub; 11. Tito Mua, 12. Henry Seavula, 13. Rory Sidey, 14. Damien Fakafanua; 15. Nick Reily.
Gordon: 1. Travis Church, 2. Nathan Nicol, 3. Martin Plokstys; 4. Ed Gower, 5. Kingsley Seale; 6. Bryan Perry, 7. Craig Thomas [c], 8. Billy Ratu; 9. Tom Sully, 10. Josh Keil; 11. Corey Brown, 12. Josh Whittaker, 13. Dane Haylett-Petty, 14. Terry Preston; 15. Dave Harvey.
Referee: Callan O'Neill

PARRAMATTA (12th) v RANDWICK (6th) at Granville Park (3:00pm)
For a team which has not performed terribly well in recent years, Parramatta have always shown great fight against Randwick and will be hoping to do so again at Granville Park on Saturday.

After big losses to Manly and Sydney Uni in the opening two rounds, the Two Blues went within five points of claiming their opening win of the season last weekend against Penrith. Mark Frost contributed 14 points with the boot to put Parramatta in winning position only for a late Penrith try to keep the Two Blues propping up the ladder.

Randwick will be looking for an improved performance after dropping their first game of the season to Easts last week. The Galloping Greens were guilty of letting a strong start fall away from them in the second forty and will not let that happen again this week. One to watch will be speedster Clinton Sills who has already represented Australia at U20s and Sevens.

Parramatta: 1.Richard Just, 2. Jono Ede, 3. Tor Killman; 4. Ben Fainga'a, 5. Josh Kron; 6. Sam Evalu, 7. Andrew Cox [c], 8. Maile Latukefu; 9. Zeb Filise, 10. Ben Gilbert; 11. Brendan Lane, 12. John Fonua, 13. Richard Williams, 14. Jessie Leota; 15. Mark Frost.
Randwick: 1. Daniel Spencer, 2. John Fonokalafi, 3. Jono Owen; 4. Will Crutchley, 5. Ross Kennedy; 6. Neil Meyer; 7. Leon Lam, 8. Sione Kepu; 9. Danny Kroll, 10. Brent Kelly [c]; 11. Clinton Sills, 12. Dane Inman, 13. Gene Fairbanks, 14. Dave Dillon; 15. Toby Browne.
Referee: Anthony Moyes

After passing through the hands of Sydney University, Randwick and Easts in the opening rounds of the competition, Eastwood will defend the Shield at T.G. Millner Field in two weeks time against Manly.

Northern Suburbs v Manly at North Sydney Oval
Manly have delivered Northern Suburbs their first loss for 2010 with a comprehensive 46-14 victory over the Shoremen at North Sydney Oval in the ABC TV Game of the Day.

The Marlins scored six tries to one, with wingers Nemani Nadolo and Lui Siale each bagging a double for the visitors.

The win lifts Manly to second place on the Tooheys New Shute Shield ladder, while the red and blacks remain just inside the top six despite going down.

Manly 46 (Nemani Nadolo 2, Lui Siale 2, Eddie Aholelei, Marlon Solofuti tries; Adam D'Arcy 5 cons, 2 pens) d Northern Suburbs 14 (Mat Lamont try; Chris Burnett 3 pens) at North Sydney Oval. Referee: Steve Hardy

Eastern Suburbs v Eastwood at Woollahra Oval
The Sir Roden Cutler Shield may not be registering for Frequent Flyer miles just yet, but it will need to cross the most famous harbour in the world after Eastwood registered a 29-20 victory over Eastern Suburbs at Woollahra Oval.

The Beasts scored three tries to two in their Shield defence, however the visitors kept their victory hopes alive via the boot of James Foote who contributed 16 points with the boot, while former Western Force half James Stannard piloted an important drop goal in his first start at fullback.

It was Easts first loss for the season which sees them drop from first to third, while the Woods have entrenched themselves in the top six, more than a bonus point win away from seventh.

Eastwood 29 (John Grant 2 tries; James Foote 4 pens, 2 cons, James Stannard drop) d Eastern Suburbs 20 (Jessie Davidson 2, Petero Satogo tries; Brendan McKibbin con, pen) at Woollahra Oval. Referee: Ian Smith

Southern Districts v Penrith at Forshaw Rugby Park
Southern Districts have continued their strong start to season 2010 with an emphatic second half performance to defeat Penrith 40-13 at Forshaw Rugby Park.

Leading by just one point at the break against an Emus outfit committed to the cause, the Rebels powered home in the second half to register their third bonus point win for the season and propel them to a four point lead at the top of the table.

Western Force rookie Stefano Hunt scored one of the Rebels six tries, with ex-Waratah Nathan Sievert continuing his strong form with the boot with five conversions.

Southern Districts 40 (Stefano Hunt 2, Chris Kerr, Josh Gamgee, Nifo Nifo, John Ulugia tries; Nathan Sievert 5 cons) d Penrith 13 (Leon Bott try; Tawhiri Walsh 2 pens, Gavin Duncan con) at Forshaw Rugby Park. Referee: Daniel Cheever

Warringah v Sydney University at Pittwater Rugby Park
In an important match for both teams, Warringah have upset Sydney University 13-10 at Pittwater Rugby Park.

Both teams scored one try apiece in the low-scoring encounter, however the successful kicking of Will Sare and Brock McGarity edged the Rats to victory.

The win saw Warringah leapfrog the Students into eighth place, while the five-time defending champions lay in ninth after four rounds, only sitting ahead of Penrith, West Harbour and Parramatta.

Warringah 13 (Kotoni Ale try; Will Sare con, pen, Brock McGarity pen) d Sydney University 10 (Dan Kelly try; Dan Kelly con, pen) at Pittwater Rugby Park. Referee: James Leckie

West Harbour v Gordon at Concord Oval
Gordon registered its first win of the season while West Harbour slumped to its fourth straight loss with the Highlanders prevailing 33-25 at Concord Oval.

Each side scored three tries apiece, however Dave Harvey's contribution of 23 points from a try, four penalty goals and three conversions proved the difference.

The result lifts Gordon to within three points of the top six, while the Pirates are languishing in eleventh place, just one point ahead of Parramatta at the bottom of the Tooheys New Shute Shield ladder.

Gordon 33 (Josh Whittaker, Dane Haylett Petty, Dave Harvey tries; Dave Harvey 4 pens, 3 cons) d Warringah 25 (Tito Mua, Lester Salanoa, Damien Fakafanua tries; Nick Reily 2 cons, 2 pens) at Concord Oval. Referee: Callan O'Neill.

Parramatta v Randwick at Granville Park
Randwick have recorded their third victory of 2010 in a convincing 59-0 win over Parramatta at Granville Park.

The Two Blues went within moments of victory at Penrith last weekend, but were outclassed by a Randwick outfit keen to hit back after surrendering the Sir Roden Cutler Shield to Easts seven days ago.

Neil Meyer and Gene Fairbanks each scored hat-tricks for the Galloping Greens, while Australian Sevens rep Clinton Sills scored one of Randwick's nine tries in his first top grade start after moving from Sydney University in the off-season.

Randwick 59 (Neil Meyer 3, Gene Fairbanks 3, Leon Lam, Clinton Sills, Dave Dillon tries; Toby Browne 7 cons) d Parramatta 0 at Granville Park. Referee: Anthony Moyes.

Southern Districts are cleaning up on the Force players aren't they getting hold of any rep players on the market....

Well, Gordon notched up their first win of the competition against West Harbour.

West Harbour were on top for the first half and had a 22-12 lead at one stage. The turning point came when one Hendrik “Dud” Roodt was injected into the game around the 50 minute mark. He got heavily involved right from the get go and provided some much needed and lacking go forward. His runs close to the ruck gave space to the centre combination of Josh Whittaker (who had his best performance in first grade) and Dane Haylett-Petty (who looked good at 13) that provided the attacking spark.

All of the changes by the coaching staff had a good impact:
- Travis Church turned the Gordon scrum into an attacking weapon
- Brian “Bubba” Perry was solid and did not look out of place, he will be a better player for the experience
- Tom Sully looked a well organised halfback with a snappy pass and good box kick, should hold that number 9 jersey following this performance
- Dane Haylett-Petty as mentioned above looks a class player at this level
- Corey Brown added genuine pace and had a good workrate off the ball

The thing I would be interested in is what the hell happened to second grade on the weekend?

Having a team playing second grade with the following experienced first graders playing Tuala, Gluth, Preston, Wade etc. And to get beaten by 15 points!?

What did you think TG?

Well injuries didn't help: Wade, Sean Morrell, Lamarn Ma'a and Lex Fairley all suffered reasonably serious injuries.

The biggest problem they have is a lack of a quality 10, the last few years 2nd grade have had Donnie Nepia steering them around now the park. At the moment Ryan Matthews has the job (he was 1st colts last year) but he looks like he might be better off in 3rd grade at this stage of his career. With Mike Hercus coming back hopefully next week we may see Josh Keil drop down but barring that I would consider putting Mark Preston to 10.

And to be fair it was a pretty damn solid West Harbour team they came up against, Sam Latinpulu was outstanding.

The biggest issue from the West Harbour v Gordon game was the absence of the BBQ. Unforgivable. The soggy ham and cheese toasties werent exactly a suitable replacement - but I suppose were still tasty!!

TG, agree the turning point was when Dud came on for Bubba. Whilst Perry had an OK game, there was a huge difference in class (as I suppose you would expect) between him and Dud. The aggro level definitely stepped up - there were many times when I thought it was going to boil over.

I'll work out who you are one day TG :) I'm doing the BBQ at Gordon this Saturday - come over and say hello - I might even put extra onions on your steak sandwich if you say hello nicely!!

Well the students are 1 from 4 (and the 1 was Parra!).
Tough match against the Rats at Rat Park. Once again a very young Uni team, especially in the forwards with 2 20yo locks and a backrow made up of 2 20yos and an 18yo. Ben Roberts and Paddy Ryan were the only forwards with any 1st grade experience. The backs were pretty green as well with Ed Bredenham at 1/2. It was good to see Dan Kelly at 5/8, but unfortunately a knee injury means he will now miss at least a month. Rockabaro and Hodge were good in the centres and the back 3 were OK with Pete Betham looking dangerous at times. Uni had a dominant scrum and a pretty good lineout when Roberts could throw straight, but the Rats were fantastic at the breakdown. Beau Robinson was brilliant and the 7 ( Ale, what a name) were dynamite. And their defence was awesome, especially when Uni threw everything at them for about 10 mins in the 2nd half. Rats 5/8 was also good, throwing some nice short balls for the centres. Overall a really good game in the slug it out style, and will be a great learning experience for these young Uni blokes. Best on field was Beau Robinson. I love watching this guy play.
Lee might be interested to know that young Luke Jones played 8 for Uni. He looked out of his depth early on. Robinson was terrorising him at the back of the scrum and he was running too high and getting belted. To his credit he seemed to learn as the game progressed and he was much more effective in the last 20 than the first 20. One to watch.

Now let me just say this - Is the points system bringing Uni back to the pack? As this hasn't happened(the start Uni have had) for the last few seasons?

Obviously it will take about a decade to have a full effect with Uni also not being as dominant in 1st Grade Colts, looking at it less of the representative players of last year's schoolboys sides have gone to Uni. This will most probably lead to Uni in the future having a reduction of the 30 odd Provincial contracted players they have now.

Are the prize assets these days Topo/Bruce the GPS/CHS/CAS/ISA players that do not make these schoolboys sides?

Massive generalisation but is this because there is a higher percentage of Islanders/CHS kids in the rep teams and these guys are less likely to go on through the uni/college old boy system?
