Pirate Lote braces for Deans flogging

Rupert Guinness | May 29, 2009

LOTE TUQIRI expects the Wallabies will be in for a "flogging" when they assemble for their first training camp of the year on Sunday, although their Barbarians clash comes just six days later.

And the winger plans to kick himself back into gear after a two-week break forced by the Waratahs' premature end to their Super 14 campaign, by playing club rugby tomorrow.

Tuqiri's appearance for West Harbour against Southern Districts at Forshaw Park will be his first since 2004, and his first time alongside fellow Wallaby and NSW back Timana Tahu at the club.

Tuqiri is not worried the Pirates match might leave him tired going into the Wallabies camp at Coogee, where he predicts coach Robbie Deans will drive his charges hard all week.

He believes his first game since the Waratahs beat the Lions in Johannesburg two weeks ago will sharpen his senses and match fitness.

It could also shorten his selection odds for the Barbarians game at the Sydney Football Stadium tomorrow week - especially if he and Tahu make a strong impact together.

Tuqiri and Tahu are two of seven players in the 29-man Wallabies squad who have elected to play club rugby this weekend.

Tuqiri said he had made the decision to play club rugby by himself, without Deans's input. But the battle for spots in the first Wallabies side of the year is still wide open, and the last thing players need is to go into a tense and hard camp short of the edge matches provide.

Tuqiri said his aim tomorrow would be to dust off the cobwebs. This week he resumed individual training with weights and sprint sessions.

"I haven't been dormant, but I haven't played or run a lot for a couple of weeks now," he said. "It would be good for me to get back out on the field. I did some training this week which was good, but nothing is quite like the game. And with the Barbarians coming up, you want to put yourself in the best possible … not shape, but where your body is used to playing again.

"We will probably get flogged at [Wallabies] training next week, but at least the body will be battle hardened if I am lucky enough to get called up and picked. We had two weeks [off]. It was disappointing not playing more footy, but it's good now that I have got the chance to play. I am just going in thinking about getting the legs to tick over and getting my body back into match condition."

Fate has dealt Tuqiri a kind hand. The Pirates, one of the more attacking and entertaining sides, have won their past five games.

The return of Tuqiri and Tahu should make for a good fit - for both the Pirates and themselves.

Tuqiri has spoken to coach Stu Woodhouse, but doesn't yet know where he will play or for how long.

"Myself and Timana [named at No.13] will be thrown in somewhere. I would say on the wing," Tuqiri said.

Of the other Wallabies appearances this weekend, one of the most interesting is Ben Alexander's planned game time for Eastwood against Gordon at Chatswood Oval on Sunday - the same day the Wallabies assemble in Coogee.

Three of the four props in the national squad are loose-heads, with Al Baxter being the tight-head specialist.

With Benn Robinson and Baxter likely to be the No.1 and No.3 props, it is imperative the Wallabies bench has a prop who can play both sides.

Alexander, who has experience at tight-head, seems poised to take that slot, as his time for the Woodies will be spent playing in that position.

SUNDAY

Thank you chappies - I have tried them and generally they aren'tup to date on Sunday mornings but I will persevere.
It's tough being an expat up here.
Love your comment Scarfman - perhaps I should just ring Hickey, Wisemantel etc.

Interesting that alexander is to play THP this week for Eastwood, but he doesn't get on the team sheet on clubrugby (neither does Dunning) because Dunning will also be wanting time there.

ok, just caught up with the club rugby ruggamatrix podcast. Two questions:
2) How rich are Lee's beloved Rats? I assume they pay big bucks for John McKee BUT THEY MUST BE PAYING BIG FUCKING BIKKIES TO HAVE POACHED PAT O'CONNOR AND RICHARD BROWN FROM BRISBANE CLUB RUGBY TO PLAY DOWN THERE. Sorry but that's just wrong. Wests and GPS in Briso should have them. That pisses me off immensely.

easy answer is - Sydney club is professional Brisbane is anything but.

Brown and O'Connor have just played a few games for the Rats to keep them in shape in the case of O'Connor and IIRR Brown only played one game for the Rats, in August last year.

Luke Holmes is back playing for the Rats but he is a local boy who always played for us. Haig Sare was also back at his old club last week and Sheehan will play next week - and he is needed because they are getting belted.

The Rats don't play this weekend and will play the Beasts during the bye weekend next week.

It's good to get some of the Super14 players back into Sydney club rugby as the standard is a lot higher with them in it - especially when the best teams are playing.

It's a pity that Uni are playing Manly at Uni Oval today. I was there last night for the U20 game and the cricket pitch area was crap - and the rain is still bucketing down this afternoon. Manly has been terrific this year with not a lot of big names but Uni have a lot of their Super players back. I expect Halangahu to be influential in this game and Carter will live up to his name - carting the ball up.

Hoiles is back for Randwick (bashed by Eastwood last week) against Penrith who are stepping up in class. Phibbs will start and Valentine, who couldn't train last week, will come off the bench. It's a pity that Kepu has been named at 1 and not at 3.

Norths lost to Penrith last week but they have SNK back for their game against Parramatta. They also have George Hughes from the Bath development squad who came here as a backpacker. Shaun Berne tried to talk him into going to Randwick, but he's playing for Norths because his girlfriend lives in Neutral Bay.

Southerns v Wests Pirates should be a good game. The Rebels front row should be handy with Palmer and Henderson the starting props and Shepherdson on the bench. The Pirates are going for their 6th win a row and have Tahu and Ma'afu playing for them (Salesi at 3, I mean, brother Campese is a regular at 1). Tuqiri is making noises that he will play but he is not named. [The Rebels think they are a chance of getting Tatupu from the Force to join them soon also.]

Gordon is playing Eastwood on Sunday and has Ed Gower back from injury. Josh Keil has gone to trial for Samoa; so the excellent Dave Harvey goes from 15 to 10 and Mark Preston from the midfield to fullback. Ben Hand may play for the Woodies and Matt Dunning will come from the bench as he did last week. Despite thrashing Randwick last week, Eastwood haven't beaten anybody above them this year; so Gordon could win at home.

Meanwhile, James O'Connor is all but a certainty to leave Western Australian for the Waratahs or Brumbies next season after approaching Sydney Premier Rugby club Randwick for a Shute Shield contract, effective immediately.
Part of Robbie Deans's 29-man Wallabies squad, O'Connor is believed to be seeking permanent accommodation on the eastern beaches, adding to speculation he may join the Waratahs to team with Wallabies backline stars Lote Tuqiri, Timana Taha, Drew Mitchell, Luke Burgess and Lachie Turner.

Force team-mate and Wallabies flanker David Pocock is also looking to move to Sydney, at least for the Super 14 off-season.

The talented No.7 is close to terms with the Galloping Greens. He has one more season to run on his two-year deal with the Force in Perth. Randwick are confident of snaring his signature during the week when he arrives in Sydney to join the Wallabies camp. If he does so is likely to join Elsom and other rugby stars at a Gallopping Greens' luncheon on Friday.

The stretch that O'Conner is certain to leave, is questionable, but Randwick have two decent player for the season.. The Shute Shield is getting some quality units

Jeez its amazing the leg-up that Uni get from the refereeing body isn't it? Yesterday the ball was shooting out of the Manly ruck at all angles but Pearce completely missed the Uni openside at the bottom - I could see it through the mud from Quakers Hill.

Deans learns the pleassures of Sydney Club. A beer on the hill with mate.

jimwilliams_robbiedeans_wideweb__470x308,0.jpg

ROBBIE DEANS was not looking for the slick passes, sharp running lines, swashbuckling tackles and other flashes of individual flair from Wallabies Lote Tuqiri and Timana Tahu as they played for West Harbour against Southern Districts on Saturday.

As the Wallabies coach stood in rain on the windswept grassy knoll behind the goalposts at Forshaw Park he was looking for something more.

"Leadership … that's what I am looking for," he said with 15 minutes to go as the Pirates drew level at 22-22.

Four minutes later, Tahu's burst and pass to Tuqiri, who was on his left and several metres out from Southern Districts' line, put his fellow Waratah - on the wing after starting at fullback - over the line for the Pirates' fourth of five tries.

While up 27-22, the Pirates had not yet won. The Rebels drew level again with another try. But one more five-pointer by Pirates winger John Sinisa clinched a 32-27 win.

It was a huge collective effort by the Pirates.

It was an effort in which Tahu and Tuqiri lifted their side when it really mattered. As Tuqiri and Tahu admitted, the challenges for any Wallaby returning to club rugby are greater than people realise.

They must adapt to a team they know little or nothing about - the personnel and the various tactics.

Then comes the expectation of fans that Wallabies will tear the opposition apart with their class and flair.

And as Deans, who ventured to Forshaw Park with Wallabies forwards coach Jim Williams, remarked: "It is seldom that the best get the chance to shine" as they do in club rugby.

Deans sees the challenge for any Wallaby who returns to play club rugby.

It challenges "their ability to organise" and "to contribute," he says.

"They have to work with the people around them and work for the people around them."

Do club supporters have overly high expectations of Wallabies when they play club rugby? Deans smiles before saying: "I don't know. Go and have yarn with the people on the hill."

As he speaks he nods to his left where fans are giving Tuqiri and Tahu a spray. Both players later said they heard every barb - and loved it.

Both said they would come back to do it again. Most likely, Deans would, too.

Re: 2009 Shute Shield

The postponed match between Easts and the Rats was played at Woollahra yesterday: East 11 Rats 23. Which means the mighty Pirates remain third. :thumb :thumb :thumb

The Shute Shield competition looks very even this year, despite the numerous rep players lining up for Uni and Randwick. Manly have bolted out to 40 points but following them Eastwood are second on 33 while Randwick are seventh on 28 a nose in front of the Rats on 26. Norths, Souths, Parramatta and Penrith look to be out of it. It was good to read of the Prairiewood HS schoolboys performances in Japan recently; their coach also coaches the Penrith Emus and has signed most of them for the Emus Colts this year. Wouldn't that be great for rugby: a competitive team from Penrith?

Absolutely. And they will be up until someone starts offering scholarships ;)

Nice to see the good guys getting a win at the cabbage patch; they needed it.

It is just as well that this game was postponed to the bye weekend because the Rats got more of their S14 players back and they included Josh Holmes, who I didn't know had returned to his old club. Because Sam Harris is still out for a couple more weeks, he played at 12, and didn't look out of place either.

Pek Cowan was back too and played THP for the first half and LHP in the 2nd. He's wearing a much bigger jersey than he had the last time he played for the Rats. Luke Holmes and Haig Sare have played a few games now, and Pat O'Connor came on for the 2nd half. Brett Sheehan, a superb club player is back too. All we need is AJ Whalley to show up.

Now they are looking like a real competitive team and one hopes that they haven't given others too big a lead.

Easts looked utterly clueless on attack and got bossed around a bit in the forwards. Very static at the moment are the Beasts. At least they won Seconds...
