Oz men beat nz in must win pool match to get into cup quarter finals then lose to France.

Starting to think with so many oz sides giving away games in close matches (think sevens and super rugby games like last night of Brumbies against blues) that oz sides lacking mental belief to know how to close out games to win.

Don't know if it been commented on in here about the crap where England took over 2 minutes to put ball down for a try against Argentina. Both teams should of been thrown out of comp I reckon, disgusting, it is fixing match results!

Someone like @Pfitzy will know for sure but I don't think Rugby has a Law or Regulation wrt collusion/ manufacturing a result like cricket does? And IIRC cricket only did it when it became known that the Test in which SA & England each forfeited an innings what at the behest of the bookies.

Edit: I did see it suggested somewhere that ref could've penalized England for time wasting but, again, not sure what the Laws etc have to say on that subject.

O'Keefe was talking about it on Breakdown, there are laws against timewasting, and playing outside the spirit of the game, which may of come into play.

Women's Series final points table:

Argentina currently top of the Men's table but docking everyone's two worst performances puts SA back on top:

Adjusted*:

101 SA
92 Argentina
87 Australia
86 Fiji
69 Ireland

* Not sure if Fiji get pro-rated for the Leg they missed or if it just counts as one of their two worst results. I've gone with the latter.

"[Nigel] Owens tweeted: “I don’t think this is good for the game. A player or team must not do anything that is against the spirit of the game. I’m surprised the referee didn’t make him ground the ball. That’s what we use to do when I was on the 7s circuit, many years ago.”

"He has expanded in an interview with Wales Online, saying: “Nobody wants to see something like that in the game. The referee has it in his armoury to impose a sanction if he feels an action amounts to ungentlemanly conduct and is against the spirit of the game.

“The England player who broke free against Argentina should have put the ball down without undue delay. Within the laws, the referee is entitled to tell him to put it down and act within the spirit of the game. Had I been officiating and encountered such a situation, I would have sanctioned the player. The onus was on the ball-carrier who’s crossed the try line to put the ball down.”

manipulating results like that is not part of any sport!
Dunno. Not that they'd particularly celebrate, but how did nz women finish 5th on the ladder?

A thumb has been put on on the scale for log points more than once in this sport. Be interesting to see if Wales manage to avoid relegation in the men's comp.

^ totally different scenarios. When the Series was re-launched WR (World Rugby) announced that everyone's two worst results wouldn't count; that points would be pro-rated for teams that missed additional Legs due to Covid; and that England, Wales & Scotland's points would be pro-rated for the Legs in which Team GB played. Later they announced Russia's points would be pro-rated down to reflect the Legs from which they were (rightly) barred. At every step every team knew exactly where they stood.

What happened in the England v Argentina match was blatant collusion to obtain a result favourable to both teams. I don't particularly blame the ref for not penalising the English player as he may not have known he could, but WR (World Rugby) need to sanction both teams & make it clear that if it happens again teams will be stripped of points.

Agree with this.

When the Series was re-launched WR (World Rugby) announced that everyone's two worst results wouldn't count; < that specific detail was some time after the launch, but yeah okay > that points would be pro-rated for teams that missed additional Legs due to Covid; <certainly no such announcement at launch.>

and that England, Wales & Scotland's points would be pro-rated for the Legs in which Team GB played. < again, the specific detail some time after the launch> At every step every team knew exactly where they stood. < Not the case until late in the season >
Here's a question for you - how quickly can you calculate the NZ men's points on the log? Let's say they win the remaining events...

Sanction on Russia was announced the week after Ukraine invasion & has been appended to the women's standings ever since. Everything else was set out last 1 December, I linked the media release on 2/12 & there was plenty of coverage elsewhere, I seem to recall.

I'm no Rachel Riley but by my calculation the NZ men will finish with 7/5 of their final points talley so if they were to win both remaining Legs:

(39+44)×(7/5)=116.

Took me ~3 minutes.
