we also didn't figure out the ref. very northern hemisphere type of game and we didn't adjust to that.

That was a bloody good test from a neutral point of view. Wallabies weren't bad, I genuinely thought the Scots just played well. Thay controlled match well, kicking game was spot on. Watched it here in Pommyland, and enjoyed the commentators too. So good test, watched in bloody good pub, so another plus for the game.

The Scots played well and deserved the win. Agree with comments that the ref was to involved. Needed to let the game flow. Sadly we had no spark. Losing Kurevi (red card last test) and JAS has meant our centres are not getting over the gain line. Clearing kicks by Gordon were average as were the penalty kicks by Lolosio. (he just has a pop gun kick.) Our line out was predictable with only 2 jumpers in Wilson and LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto). The fact that we stayed in contact with the Scots was fortunate. We need some front line players back next week. TT, McReight, Fessler, JAS. Not sure what Schmidt can do about our 5/8 situation. Lolosio and Donaldson are not the answer. Edmed needs some game time but needs to be selected. He is a bigger body and is better defensively that Lolosio and has got confidence from his NPC time. The best young 10 in the country is Isaiya Katoa and we lost him to League.

If we only lose by 10 to Ireland then that will be a good result for the Wallabies

Wobs handling lost us that game. It was rinse and repeat. Get into their 22 then turn the ball over either by handling error, held up or penalty. They boot it long. We return with a 30 m kick. They boot long again and we kick it out at about our 30/40m line. Their ball. Kick deep again. We don't clear well. Territory and possession. Smart by the Scots.

No individual lost the game. Was a team effort of errors and being slightly off. Scots played well. Smart. What a difference a legit test 10 makes.

Ref didnt let the game flow. Also had some weird interpretations. Allowed them to have hands in most trucks, side entry, roll into the wobs 9 and lay on their side of the ruck slowing ball. Not a single penalty for being in the way of the 9. Would have been penalised all day in the SH.

His only real howler imo was Kellaway being held after that ruck which led to their try. Clearly obstructed the defender. You can't do that, it's not NFL.

I had a feeling the game would go this way. Week 3 of a 4 week tour is the hardest. Think we will see a much better performance next week.

What do they do in the centres?

TT, Faessler, Williams and McReight back in? No Skelton. JAS gone. Who do they bring in? Potter? Kellaway? Stewart? Would kill for Kerevi now. Shame Daugunu is injured as well. Even Paisami.

Well that was disappointing.

I don't know if it was us or them creating the niggle, but with it being a home crowd I didn't see much pay in us bringing them into things. That first extra 10m penalty they got from the referee and the proceeding 3pts was poor, though in fairness It looked like Potter was trying to get up (he was bridged over the ball) and the Scot could have easily reached under to get at the ball rather that playing at the man.

The first 20mins or so was filled with some excellent gainline and carries, genuinely punching through, but we just didn't covert any of that except for a penalty. The physicality looked great, but we need to do much better at getting some pay for our efforts. For me, it was this period where we lost the game. It's the difference to a higher ranked team like SA who would have converted some of that pressure.

Loosing JAS was unfortunate defintely changed the dimesion of our attack. Next week is going to be interesting now. Not ideal at all.

I don't know if it was more than once, but Tizzano seemed a bit eager at the breakdown without the accuracy of McReight which didn't help on a few occassions.

Our kicking in behind is just not good enough. We turned over ball cheaply on some kicks which were never setup for an easy regather by one of our players. Some of Noah's kicking for touch left a bit to be desired. Would love so see some more length.

Our accuracy and discpline was also generally off. I'd need to go back and check the count, but it felt like we gave away a lot of penalties in this game.

Th maul wasn't where we needed it to be, though I'd like to go back and rewatch a few of those to see what actually happened. The lineout likewise struggled without the extra jumper.

Their first try I also felt was a tad soft. It's not the most original move going over the top for a flying runner, I'm sure I've seen Codie Taylor do if a few times now. We need to be more switched on in those moments.

I also thought overall the referee was pretty average. He let the Scots get away with a lot at the breakdown coming in the side (which I think he called them on once), failing to roll away with any clear intent. I'm fine with the not awarding a player pinned in, but they weren't on most occasions. Our ball slowed down and got messy a number of times. They were also creaping up and looked offside a number of times. The multi replay of Wright was just stupid.

I also found the broadcast rather odd. They didn't switch to the tighter shots as often and there was almost zero replays. Len obviously fet that he's been hit in the head, but who would know as they didn't show any of the action in tight. It felt a bit like the rubbish the French broadcasters used to do.

On the positive, I feel like we're not a mile off being a respectable team with lots of components of our play starting to look good. Generally our ruck work looks to have improved. There were lots of good moments and a number of players had good impact. Players like Gleeson look the be growing and now genuinely bring something off the bench. Skelton definetely brings something to our team and I think has answered the questions about his inclusion in the Lions. I thought Potter had a very solid first showing and strikes me as a smart player a little akin to Kellaway.

Hopefully we can learn from this and put in a good showing with Ireland.

They were largely fine IMO. Would like a closer re watch but on first viewing this seems like a redundant statement
Ref let them lie around the ruck all game. Scotland's whole plan seemed to be to create chaos by diving off their feet at all rucks and hope the ref let them

Eh maybe? Again would like a re watch but its fairly normal I feel to see players who enter a ruck legally, contact, then fall in the clean out to be let play on - rightly or wrongly.

Diving off feet has always been largely reserved to either counter rucking or sealing off the ball, rather than what happens post clean out.

i don’t disagree that it shouldn’t be more heavily scrutinized, but don’t feel like it was out of step with what we’ve seen for a while both at international and domestic rugby (and therefore we could have prepared better for it)

They were intentionally diving onto the Wallabies side to either take out Wallabies defenders not a part of the ruck or impede the Wallaby 9 from getting to the ball.

The irony is the Wallabies were the team penalized for this exact thing later in the game after he let Scotland get away with it all game

I'm not pessimistic, just realistic: we'll need to go up a few gears before Scotland if we want to keep this Grand Slam alive.

Thus spaketh Pfitzy, and lo! It came to pass...

Will watch later today, but sounds like discipline and effort were a bit lacking if the stats (14 pens, 34 missed tackles) were anything to go by.

Scotland are a really well coached team at the moment. But disappointing to see the same players we have been highlighting all year as missing crucial tackles that lead to line breaks and tries, but the Scots have done their research and went hard at Kellaway and LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto).

Also can we get Potter in some headgear or something, because it's impossible to tell the difference between him and McDermott on the wide shots

Exactly, Scotland are good we had alot of changes, we didn't train all week.. I think we found we have to play a jumping 6/8 when we play Skelton.
Not sure it's quite that definitive, the loss of Faessler so close to kick off in a week where we had little opportunity to train likely had as much or more impact on our lineout. That's pretty clear to me in the fact that are lineout still struggled after Skelton left the field.

I would probably be looking at Frost as his partner in the future though, he has much more capacity to get up above the competition and is better over 80 than Salakaia-Loto.

Edit: Losing Williams so close to kick off won't have helped the lineout either. We aren't a settled enough side to roll with these sudden changes and a disrupted build up all rolled into one.
