But does Arnold necessarily have to come off? He played the whole game against Wales except for about 6 - 7 minutes when he was off for blood treatment. That was a very hectic game for both locks. They put in a mountain of work. Seems to me that both would be capable of playing a full 80 minutes, and probably be more effective that Big Will has been for 2 - 3 years.

It will be harder going for the big forwards in the wet

But Mumm, Simmons, Skelton on the bench together rings alarm bells. There is no real cover for 7/8. I can cope with that compromise on a 5/3 bench, but seems a touch unnecessary on a 6/2.

Anyways, lets see how things pan out.

Pocock is the cover for 7. Mumm goes to 6.

Pocock is also the cover for 8.

Timani was excellent in super rugby last year

He was good this year just not as good as last year

Too many people just see flash plays and don't appreciate the hard tough in tight stuff.

That has always been the problem with most armchair supporters. They see a good run by a bloke or a try and think he's had a great overall game.

It's only persons that genuinely understand the game and its nuances that I personally value opinion.

There are quite a few on GAGR that I value but shit there are plenty on here that have no idea (obviously just my opinion as we are all entitled to do)

Pocock moves to 7 or 8, Mumm moves to 6

Sweeping generalizations and claims of superiority are usually made by those who don't know what they are talking about.

They also tend to polarise opinion, generate likes or stimulate replies.
As opposed to a well thought out but lengthy repose which is read by the diehard and skipped by many.
It depends on whether ones goal is to educate, irritate, or entertain.
Being the Internet there is a fair representation of all 3.

BR I think Timani has been developed as an 8 by the Wallabies coaches, part of the reason he took a while to debut. At Super Rugby level he played at lock mostly because they have a smaller set of back rowers (I think they were play 3 x 7s at one point) so the Wobs have honed in on his skillset to make him an 8. If they just chucked him in there first game of the season it would have been a disaster. And of course he will go well there now for the Rebels, he's been coached for the position!

Too true KOB but he always looked like an 8 rather than a lock. The most pressing part of his game that the Wallabies' coaches might have concentrated on and improved would have been his work at the back of the scrum. So far, he hasn't let us down.

Yeah - that's a bit of a worry.

EDIT : to elaborate, it could well mean that Timani is taken off with 20 - 30 to go and Poey moved to 8 just to get Mumm on the ground. That would be an error of judgement and definitely a worry.

One of the backrowers will presumably be replaced by Mumm at some point in the game. That's what the reserves are there for.

Cheika has never been the coach to make an arbitrary substitution to give someone a lot of minutes off the bench just for the sake of it. Most would accuse him of not giving his bench players enough minutes.

Timani was also a great option for 6 and not needing the specialised back of scrum training.

He could have been selected at 6 ahead of Fardy or Mumm ages ago.

Also consider before the rebels at the tahs he played both 6 and 8. He probably had a reasonable background in understanding the scrum intricacies for a no 8 anyway.

Regarding Dean Mumm and being soft:

No ones disputing his super rugby creds.

Just replay 2015 World Cup, then tell me about his super performance!? Not disputing his tahs performance just his performance against the best test teams.

I would love for him to perform well. I will the first to eat humble pie. Let's just wait and see.

Both has struggled at scrum time, Sio has lifted his game around the park though and was superb all-round last season. Slipper has been average last season and still is now.

But yeah, scrum is an issue, Sio getting penalised almost every game.

Didn't Sio get owned by the crafty Scottich prop last year at the RWC.
JP Nel from memory.
Is he playing?

Yeah they could have but I am convinced they have been grooming him for the 8 gig the whole time. Whether that is or isn't the case, I'm not sure that throwing him in for a debut at 6 in the first Bledisloe, or the England series for that matter, after a full super season playing lock would have been to anyone's benefit.

Cheika clearly started the season with experience as his main selection criteria and has transitioned the newbies in when they were ready and/or when the opportunities arose and now they are all holding their places in the team. Short term pain, long term gain.
