School sporting scholarships/recruitment

HowardL, can you confirm whether or not Sporting Scholarships are "allowed" under the CAS association rules for games as they are clearly not allowed under the AAGPS Heads of School code of conduct.

There are plenty of allegations of talented athletes being enticed to certain CAS schools for certain sports, and part of that enticement is a reduction in school fees but, on the CAS web site, I can not find any reference material that says this is not to happen.

No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?”

Several would have protested if they could find the right argument

And from the same book

Surely you don't want Jones back

This is an interesting excerpt from Riverviews current Newsletter the 'Viewpoint'

"Our special guest on Wednesday epitomises all that hard work and dedication stands for. Both academically and on the sporting field, Leo Barry has worked tirelessly to achieve his success.
Leo Barry attended Riverview from 1994–1995. He was a boarder from Deniliquin and was in More House. During his time at the College, Leo was a member of the AFL Team. In both of these years Riverview were Lions Cup Premiers."

Was Leo parachuted in or was he a special country border??

The parachute owner may have been the Swans. It is not unheard of for the "booster" paying some or all fees for a talented athlete to be a sporting entity (wealthy one obviously).

These occur sometimes without the receiving school's knowledge at time of enrolling, but View is the only AAGPS school with an AFL programme, so they are a logical target for any swans warehousing.

I am told that St Gregs (in the ISA rugby and CCC for RL) have a number of lads that have been warehoused there with fees paid in whole or part by the Mungo clubs. The St Gregs School Fivekick team apparently has boys who play against each other in SG Ball comps but get on famously at school games and training.

PS Two recent quotes from God (for twitters): "If, while arguing, you are able to cite a verse in a chapter of an old book that seems to support your position, you win." and
"It's not that people never learn, it's that they rarely ever want to."
Another one from twitter God, which ALMOST had applicability to some posters on this thread: "People in glass houses should not throw orgies"

As a parent of a boy who doesn't go to a AAGPS school (public school) I read all the posts about scholarships and who does and doesn't and it would appear that most schools do in some form or another offer scholarships and i understand there is an agreement not to offer scholarships, but it appears discounts of fees is ok? so why doesn't someone just have to courage to say "Yes we offer scholarship and or fee reductions for talented athletes" wouldn't that end the whole debate? Then it would be an individual school thing when the parents of the boys not having their fees reduced or on scholarships complain about their own fees the schools themselves would start to self regulate their spending on sporting student at the end of the day these schools are businesses or am i being too simple minded.

Does the Presbyterian Church have a top dog with balls?

Now that’s a very interesting question Spieber. The Presbyterian church is not as hierachial as the Anglican or Catholic churches, with the church administration having less power to direct operations within local churches. “Presyter” comes from the Greek meaning elder, and the distinctive feature of Presbyterian churches is the supervisory role within the local church of the group of elders. Some would suggest this model of church governance is more closely linked to the New Testament example than the more hierachical systems, but we probably don't need to go into that here.

The “top dog” role above the local churches of each state is the Moderator, but his role is largely symbolic. As the name suggests, he acts as the chairman for the annual assembly where points of church administration and theology are discussed, but he has no executive role, and the job is for a year only, as QH indicates. It would be highly unusual for the Moderator to speak out about an issue like this one unless there was a drive from the local churches to address it. He is a man, though, so yes, he has balls.

It isn’t unprecedented for the church to move in and sack school or college boards for financial or theological reasons, but I am sure we are many, many miles away from that happening to TSC. With some justification, such things are hard to do and move very slowly.

Whilst I’m sure most people hardly care about the link between various churches and these schools, it’s not a good situation for a church school to be in.

As you were.

A work colleague was discussing the Scots situation, and I think the first casualty for Scots may have been found.

His boy was down to start at Scots next year in Year 7. The boy is a decent enough footballer, probably a solid 13B's rugby standard, and a 1/2 decent Basketballer. Pretty clever academically too.

Dad, Mosman resident but recent arrival Sydney, so the boy has missed the boat on Shore and "they were very snooty when I enquired about a place", has been following the press on the issue and said that his boy will be going to one of the following: Grammar, Cranbrook, St Andrews, Redlands in that order. Reason: Games are supposed to be for games sake, Schools are supposed to educate kids.

He said, the deposit he paid to secure the place for his boy at Scots can go to pay for the spin doctors to save Scots reputation. That is the last they will get from him. He feels that Scots deceived him at enrolment time.

One suspects that he will not be the only one.

Conversely another colleague was almost of the opposite view. He has no children.

It is Patrician Bros, Blacktown that leads the league's arms race in the tyke (my) system, although Gregs were previously known for it.

DragonMan - I just noticed your question buried in my original, very long post!

Your information is incorrect

Matt Serhon came to Newington in year 9 - he was at Waverley in years 7 & 8.
Lachy Cannell also came in year 10 (or 11?) - i think he was at Epping High prior to that
Liam Bennett was not in the 1st XV
Nobody attended the Prep School

The only Year 7 boy is Anderson - though earlier in the Season Josh Mitchell was in the team - Mitchell is also a year 7 boy.
Thanks for setting me straight. I know that Matt Serhon'sfather is one of the Rugby masters at New and he has 3 sons there ,I must havemixed Matt up with his younger brother who I think is year11 (must be tough being on a teacher's salary and sending 3 kids through New, with little subsidy, this probably explains the late enrolment). Liam Bennnett features wearing a 1sts jersey in the New Rugby videos so I naturally assumed he was in the 1sts. Re Lachlan Cannell I had been informed that he came through Lindfield Prep, apologies.

Newington have maintained complete silence for at least 2 years. An example that Dr Lambert might have followed in retrospect instead of going on the attack and painting himself into a corner.
New did have a lot of schlorship boys in year 2013 (the initial year 7 group was quite small because of the Work Place Relations debacle and if that group had continueds as it was to year 12 a lot of the HSC subjects that would ordinarily have been offered would have had to be scrapped) but the circumstances of their enrolments was dislosed to the GPS Heads by Dr Mulford so that'sprobably part of the reason the other GPS Heads are not crucifying New.

Correct. Lachlan Cannell was at Killara High when approached to take up a full scholarship for New Years 11and 12. (May also have been last term of year 10 - this was certainly the case with Simon Kennewell)

Seriously is the word Hypocarisy taught at Joeys. So the after the 13a's lost every game on year 7 you are happy with the import of 2 Sydney Rep players? Astomnshing piece of hyperbole
The way Joey's academic performance has been sliding, perhaps it is. But let that not detract from solid endeavour on the field - assuming we are talking rugby, the 13As finished 3rd losing only to the dial-a-title duo. The basketballers finished 2nd to 'view, astomnshing though it may be.

What do you mean 'approached to take up a full scholarship'.
