Dunno Paarl, the ITM cup seems to have had a be of a revival this year. Good matches, good sized crowds and there seems to be a hell of a lot of talk around new stars/players on the scene.

as I don't live in NZ, the coverage is non-existent so hard to guage how much of it is bullshit.

Tew & co seem to be doing ok on the whole at the moment - I'm usually leading the critical charge on our admins, but lately they have made a lot of right moves. With the RWC coming up, this is vital. I certainly think it's a lot more vital than pandering to the raving lunatic style comments that are coming out of the SARU at the moment!
To be honest at least Saru make noises, NZRU nothing and thats why they are the kids in this marraige. If I compare the CC to the ITM, flippen hell, we have the big 3 (WP/Buls/Sharks) with all the depth and dominating our competition. You have 14 teams , any team that can beat the other on any given day and Tew and his gang wants to cut them in half. What do you think will happen to your player stock , being a bit more experiense and not able to make the All Black squad? In a year or two they'll be all gone and you will sit in the same position we have. They talk a lot about players heading north but they help them going where ever. The day when the Aussies lift their player restrictions, your dead meat.

If Aus are the wife when the marriage breaks down we will get the house car etc and custody of the Kid, SARU will have to pay us maintenance and Alimony for at least 25 years as well. :)

I can see your point, but I don't share your concerns. The ITM cup is an ever evolving second tier competition. And you have to realise that the changes are often made in economic interests. Is it better to have 300 signed players earning not so much, or 150 earning twice as much? When you look at the salaries the NZRFU has to pay (centralised contracts remember), I think we are more likely to retain the better talent by paying the better half twice as much.

The day Australia boots AFL & League into touch, we're all dead meat. I am 100% sure that if Australia lift their player restrictions, NZRFU would change as reqd.

As for your throwing in the towel statement - if you think thats old school kiwi, you don't know us at all! That is the opposite of old school kiwi.

Yes but you will be stuck with the brat all on your own :)

reckon this all has something to do with the SARU wanting a 6th S14 team, probably trying to play hard ball so the SANZAR will be more willing to allow expansion sooner rather then later.

just as i thought..

Tew said that rather than considering walking away from SANZAR, the South Africans were wondering how to fit in the Kings.

''There's no truth that they want to leave,'' said Tew. ''The biggest pressing issue for South African rugby is that they have a sixth team they'd like to have involved in a professional rugby competition.

I stumbled across this article the other day, it just throws more weight behind the argument that the SARU are talking crap, it is without a doubt now a essential part of the South African rugby economy.

Saturday’s Vodacom Super 14 final was watched by a record number of South African television viewers at the end of a season in which the average TV audience for the season grew by an astonishing 42 percent compared to 2009.
The Vodacom Bulls’ clash with the Vodacom Stormers at Orlando Stadium in Soweto was watched by a combined audience of 1.299m on the rights-holding SuperSport and M-Net – more even than watched the 2007 Rugby World Cup final.

The audience set a record for a sports event on the broadcaster and was the second successive week that the one million mark had been breached for Vodacom Super Rugby following the Vodacom Bulls’ semi-final against the Crusaders the week before.

“The audience was up 38% in February and continued to increase every week over the tournament – even before the Vodacom Bulls and Vodacom Stormers emerged as the tournament’s pace-setters.

The audience for the final was 55% higher than last year’s final and 28% higher than the Sharks and Vodacom Bulls final in 2007. Thirty-one matches had audiences of more than half a million viewers compared to only 13 in 2009.

I dont think the SARU can really argue with figures like that
