Sanix Youth Tournament: Japan

I remember seeing something on the NSWRU website about the tournament. They were looking for nominations from schools to play. They would processed with the team who had the best credentials nominated.
Also Lee if you remember that Westfields team had Steve Mafi, Lamaarn Ma'a and Jason Hopkins in it. Also a bunch of CHS reps and they also made the final of the Waratah Shield but had to forfeit due to club commitments.
Their program is not as good because the NTS out of towners aren't being sent there any more. Hugh Carpenter and Alex Larkin was their coaches back then.

From what I have seen and read of Auggies this year, they have the potential to be great representatives and ambassadors for Australia in Japan.

Good luck to them.

What are they like - strengths weaknesses style of play
Paarl Boishaai is our arc enemy in Paarl. Our schoolboy season only starts over the Easter weekend but Boishaai will be a much better contender to the Glenwood lot playing there over the past few years. They are always in SA Top 10 rugby schools. Their preview for 2011 per Rugbymatters site
2011 – Seisoen:

Voorseisoen – Reeds proewe gespeel einde Augustus.

In short their aim will be to play running rugby this year and surely will have a huge pack like we are use to. Frans Malherbe a 20 year old now in the Stormers pack and JD Moller (Stormers) and Guthro Steenkamp (Brutes and Bok LH) come from the GalPille (thats what we call the Boishaaiers) Boishaaiers is afrikaans for Boys Highers. Bok legends like Mannetjies Roux , Carel du Plessis and Corne Krige are x Boishaaiers.

St. Augustines College (ISA) and The Scots College (GPS - Sydney) are the two Oz reps in the 2011 Sanix tournament.

For folks outside of Sydney, Augies is one of the up and coming school powerhouses in Oz Schools rugby. It is the big fish in the small ISA pond. Scots is a middling member of GPS (Sydney) rugby.

Have 2 schools from Australian been selected in the past or is this new?

I think it is the first time a country (other than Japan) has had more than one representative. The exception is NZ who have had two invitations a few times, including for 2011.

I'd like to know the protocol for being invited. Do schools wait for an invite or do they apply for an invite - and if they apply do they do it through Oz Schools first? If they don't apply does Oz Schools make a decision then contact a school to see if they are interested?

Yarda, yarda - anybody know - for sure?

Japan has just let out a statement saying any travellers wishing to come to any part of Japan should reconsider. Would this mean that there would be no Sannex this year or will it be moved to another location?

The tournament will be in Fukuoka which is way down south on the island of Kyushu. This is about 1,000 kms away, as the crow flies (if crows are flying thee days), from the nuclear trouble. They should be OK unless there is a ban on all travel, or the schools decide not to go.

Looked at Sanix rugby website and it looks like tournament is still going ahead, with 4 international teams rather than 8, following the withdrawal of the 2 Australian school teams (Scots and Auggies), the team from France and one school from N.Z. It leaves one school from N.Z., one from South Africa and one from England and one from Korea in the draw, with 12 Japanese schools now entered rather than 8.

I agree with the decision by the Australain schools to pull out in the circumstances. I hope it doesn't impact on the JRU issuing an invitation to the ARU to nominate an Australian school for next year's tournament.

Congrats to the boys from Hamilton for defending their title.
I understand they beat the Pommies in the final, with the Saffers coming 3rd.
be interesting to see who gets the Aussie invite next year.
