why doesnt the SA schoolboy side ever play aus or nz?
Our schoolboy season is very full. The fixture lists usually is planned one year in advance. We have our U13/16/18 Craven Weeks in June/July and after that they pick a High Perfomance squads for the age groups. We usually plays England/France/Namibia at schoolboy level. They (France/England) use this tests to warm up for their 6 Nations. The logical thing for Sanzar is to have an U19 Tri Nations, preparing for the U20 WC.

Yep! I think it would clash with the u20 championship but if it didn't have the u20s play the curtain raiser to every Tri-Nations game

Nope havent watch any U18s this year. Paarl Gim havent played at home thus far and is struggling at the moment. Lost to Paul Roos 30-34. Walking line with KleinGim tho, they have been great so far.

Match report from Rugby Matters on the Bosch game
RBHS 19 – 15 SACS

A evenly matched game between Rondebosch and SACS ended 19 – 15 in favour of the home side on Saturday.

SACS drew first blood after a poor kick by Bosch was run back at them with number 12 Brendan Rogers breaking the line to touch down. The conversion was missed,
which came back to haunt SACS minutes later with no 8 Scott Albertyn putting
wing Selom Gavor in space, who beat two defenders to score. Hilio de Abreu added the extra points, putting Bosch 7-5 up. Bosch struck again shortly before half time, this time good interplay between the wings allowing a powerful Matthew Norris to cross over to make it 12-5.

After half time Bosch went 19-5 up with scrumhalf Dan Anderson crossing the chalk and De Abreu adding the conversion. SACS started a brave fightback, with wing Joshua Jacobsen scoring twice. However, neither of these were converted, making for a tense last ten minutes. Bosch held a rampant SACS attack off to take the match.

Bishops have problems, the WC lot except Paarl Gim and Wynberg boicot them playing post matrics.

Bishops had a tough year. They use to have Post Matrix in their first team and most of the Western Cape schools boycott them this year bar Paarl Gym who was prepared to play them Post matrix and all. They lost last week against Sacs, must be a first in many a year. Understand Percy Mongomerie is doing some excellent work at his alma mater Sacs these days.

Bishops will always be a top side. The last few years they had like Paarl Gym good ones and always the strongest in the Cape Town area. This year both struggled, Paarl Gym even more. If you look at the Top 20 you find a lot of Western Cape schools specially in the Paarl , Stellenbosch area. Its a 60 km drive from Bishops to Paarl and the competiveness push them high. These schools all have about 6 to 7 U18 teams to pick from and a lot of depth.

Victor Matfield's first taste of SA schoolboy rugby
Rugby365
Matfield's early lesson
Victor Matfield, great rugby player, starts his excellent autobiography, Victor - My Journey, with an incident from his long, great career which is not a glory moment but one well worth reading and taking in. It is right at the start of the book, not a World Cup moment but a schoolboy's lesson.

It’s a cold winter’s morning on the Highveld and the rugby field behind the Pietersburg Golf Club, where we'll be running on any moment, is covered in a crisp, white layer of frost. Groups of parents, warming themselves with steaming cups of coffee, have gathered to watch their youngsters play in an important match.

It’s not pleasant running barefoot onto an icy field, but rugby is, after all, a game for tough guys. So we're not complaining. Besides, I'm the captain and eighthman of Noordskool’s (Pietersburg North Primary) under-8 team. I have to set the example. I look down at my feet – bigger than most of the guys on my team. I'm also taller and stronger than my peers, and I realise that on this day I have to be a true leader.

We are playing our arch-enemy from the other side of town – Oosskool, as Pietersburg East Primary was commonly known. I size up our opponents. They look bigger than the lot of us, and I know they play good rugby. But we're not too shabby either.

But before long we're behind our own posts for the umpteenth time as Oosskool’s flyhalf places the ball to convert yet another try. His teammates all sport happy smiles. There’s no scoreboard, but I know we're trailing by at least 30 to 40 points.

I call the guys to form a circle. I am the captain, and the captain needs to say something, right now.

‘Boys, when that final whistle goes, we run,’ I command. ‘We run over there, behind the pavilion. We don't shake their hands, we just go.’

I couldn't think of anything else to say. To lose is a terrible thing. And it doesn't help that your dad is a big shot in Far North schoolboy rugby and principal of the primary school you attend.

When the whistle eventually goes, we make a beeline for the cover of the pavilion. I'm leading, with the team hot on my heels. A feeling of freedom and intense relief fills me as I make my getaway. My plan has saved us from further humiliation.

But I'm not fast enough. And it’s not the referee or supporters of Oosskool that chase after us. It’s my mom, Hettie. She’s furious and speeding towards me like a fleet-footed winger, her target all too obvious: my right ear.

She grabs hold of it and gives it a good pinch before the lecture begins. ‘Victor, you turn back this instant, go and find each player on that team, shake their hand and tell them they played well. The same goes for their coach. And then you thank the referee for the game. If you don't go back right now, I'll see to it that you never play rugby again.

Bit of an overreaction, I think, but I know Mom when she’s this serious. And above all, I know she is right. So I turn back and start looking for the Oosskool team.

I'm still down in the dumps when my parents drive me home later that day. Not my best day – first a massive pummelling on the field, then a proper dressing-down from my mother. But there is one more unpleasant surprise in store.

As soon as we arrive home, I am told to go to the bathroom. I know all too well what this means. A hiding on the rugby field isn't pleasant, but this is going to be in a different league altogether. No running away from this one; I have to face a thorough spanking, dished out by my dad.
Moments like these stay with you for a lifetime. Although I didn't realise it then, I learnt a valuable lesson on that fateful day: sportsmanship is more important than winning or losing. In rugby, it’s as important to win graciously as it is to lose with dignity.

Thanks, Mom!

I have 1 problem with schoolboy rugby. The schools offering bursaries to good players playing in the smaller towns. I grew up in a small town and at high school our biggest rival was a Landbou Skool (Agricultural school). Its like most of these top schools you see a all boys schools. We had woman and men in ours. What they do is they offer bursaries then rip the the players away to bolster their ranks. Grey College and The Argie school use to pick us clean and we still competed with the Argies cause they were our arch rivals. All those all boy and so called big schools do it. Grey College offered my friend a bursary so did the Argies. I was in Cape Town by that time already but use to go visit there when I can. They need to cut that crap out. Thats why I will never pay attention to rankings and such. Players they got by illegal means. Thats why you will see them have sponsors. I mean sponsors WTF? What are that money used for? Recruiting.
