Pretty much the same as the crowd attendences. S15 wont survive without SA.

Agree with you there Paarl some of the SA attendances and ratings are what keeps the competition ticking and growing. The S15 Needs SA on board to succeed.

The necessity to have Foxtel definitely does reduce the viewing audience in Australia, Paarl. I personally refuse to pay close to $100 per month on Fox, especially when I pay $400+ per annum to also be a Force member. League and Aussie Rules dominate free to air telly here and thus have larger audiences.

SA are free to leave at any time. I'd love for them to stay in the super15, they are obviously the biggest drawcard in terms of fans and sponsorship. But if the SARU are looking for some sort of worship, they can quite simply go home.

It's the same in SA though isn't it? Need DSTV to watch the games which is subscription based. I don't know how it compares in price. Here in the UK I pay £63 per month for Sky to watch a limited amount of SH rugby :(

The thing is though, in South Africa, Rugby virtually holds a monopoly in regards to winter sport. In Australia, the FTA coverage of NRL and AFL decreases Union's competitiveness in the quest for viewers.

I assume that average is for those top rating games rather than an overall average. If so it is misleading as there is only two of those games that involved an Australian team.

I'm finding it hard to believe that the Reds Crusaders game was not in the top 14 matches it was a full house at the ground.

Those stats are questionable, in NZ/AUS the Reds v Crusaders match was the most watched regular season game...

I also find it strange that the Reds v Stormers game isn't in the top 15 considering it was a near sell-outout, yet the Rebels v Cheetahs is in the top 15...

Ratings aren't everything either, it's the average income of those watching which also influences the value of the broadcast rights.
It's why rugby union in australia works so well with Foxtel.

Yeh i think that due to Oz's stonger economy and generally higher income means that advertisers see potential for good returns from less viewers. For e.g. if your advertising to 200,000 people who dont have much of a discretioanry income, it might be drawing blood from a stone.

Also find it difficult to believe those stats, how is the super final not in there? Or reds stormers?

Sigh, not this again.

If the SARUB feels this way, pick up your blankey and walk away.

You need us as much as we need you. Without the Aussies and the Kiwis, South African rugby will go down in flames as players wont want to play in local competitions forever.

But what I would like to suggest is, if the dummy keeps getting spat, that the ARU and NZRU should just go speak to the Japos and Argies. Rugby's on the way up there and theres plenty of money being thrown around in Asia. So the attitude of "You need us, more than we need you" should just stop by either party.

Agreed.

It's highly unlikely that this poisoned marriage will dissolve so learn to live with it.

Every year come negotiation time there will be sratching and clawing and everyone including fans and media will grasp the chance of claiming the moral high ground.

SARU's behavior is childish at times but the ARU and NZRU aren't exactly saints.

Everyone should just collectively get the fuck over it and move on. Like a bad marriage. Do it for the kids.

PS I also think SARU is under no illusion that it needs the other two parties as much as it needs them. They're not bloody stupid. No other comp will work for any of the three parties because the economics will never work. It's the way it chooses to negotiate that leaves a bad taste.

The Japs aren't interested and the Argies don't have adequate structures to fill a void. The Magners don't want SA.

Love and hate it is boys. Correction, hate and love.
