Yeh i think that due to Oz's stonger economy and generally higher income means that advertisers see potential for good returns from less viewers. For e.g. if your advertising to 200,000 people who dont have much of a discretioanry income, it might be drawing blood from a stone.

Also find it difficult to believe those stats, how is the super final not in there? Or reds stormers?

Finals wasnt included. The Stormers vs Saders may be in the top but not the final. They may make the bottom 50 because no SA team was involved. Last year the final draw 2,9 million viewers only in SA alone. Regarding the economy, bull shite, the subscription for SA and Aus the same in Rand Value , NZ sky a bit cheaper.

Oom, how were the crowd figures for the start of the currie cup last weekend? from the look of it out at newlands, it was terrible. i think there were more people at newlands for the first round of the super comp this year and the stormers had a bye. the public interest in the currie cup only seems to pick up in the last few rounds and during the finals, which normally coincides with the return of the bok players.

i noticed an interesting trend this year with the sponsorship of some of the super provinces (interesting for me anyway)...

bulls - retained vodacom as naming sponsor but vodacom changed their colours and logo so that it is the same as the logo used in europe and aus/nz
stormers - new naming sponsor with multinational couriers, DHL.
cheetahs - new naming sponsor with multinational auto manufactures, Toyota.
sharks - return of naming sponsor Mr Price (i could be wrong here but i believe they have just started or are in the process of starting operations in aus?)

the trend here seems obvious to me in that south africa having a competition shared with australia is financially benefitting the south african sides by sharing multinational corporate sponsorship dollars.

Newlands crowd was just over 11,000, Osfontein 12,667 and Ellispark a disappointing 3,753. Kak for SA but good compare to the NPC lot and specially the Samoa test. Awfull test crowd to see Samoa creating history.

Lol, there aren't to many countries who would get a 30'000 crowd to watch Samoa play your B side...

Good work PaarlBok for putting those up.

Those stats are questionable, in NZ/AUS the Reds v Crusaders match was the most watched regular season game...

Ratings for the four Australian winter sporting codes in 2011 (2008-2010 also kept there)

The TAMS (SA) rating for the Reds-Blues game is 265,136, but the Australian TV Ratings link above suggested 90,000. Comparing Super Rugby to NRL and AFL, Super Rugby and Aus Rugby could receive a huge boost to their audience if they could get one Australian Super Rugby game on FTA TV per week, as long as they did not compromise the value of the Foxtel deal significantly.

I also find it strange that the Reds v Stormers game isn't in the top 15 considering it was a near sell-outout, yet the Rebels v Cheetahs is in the top 15...

It might have attracted a cumulative audience just under the top 10. Melbourne rated very well this year (see the Aus link above).

Ratings aren't everything either, it's the average income of those watching which also influences the value of the broadcast rights.
It's why rugby union in australia works so well with Foxtel.

True, ratings are only one factor, and average income influence broadcast rights to a degree, but the number of Foxtel subscriptions driven by desire to watch Super Rugby/test Rugby average income will be a significant factor. Average income may influence the value of FTA rights more, with the larger number of advertisements before, during and after the game, and advertisers paying to target the Rugby demographic. If it is true that the Tri-Nations generates most of the commercial value for the broadcast rights, then your argument is definitely compelling.

Sorry Paarl I thought the original post was for most Australian watchers. I don't know how I cam up with that. I think SA should have more viewers than Aus it is your #1 sport. Is rugby on Free to air television in SA?

...Thanks for this handy link....

A BTW (and thanks to Wolverine): looking at the viewing figures (via this link) for Aus v Samoa Test played in Sydney, way more Brisbane-based viewers (136,000) watched that match than Sydney-based viewers (119,000) despite a significantly greater population in Sydney. (Note: from a quick read of this site, I was not able to ascertain if these figures were all of Foxtel and FTA, or either one of these alone.)

One wonders if this comparative data mirrors or is driven by the 2011 rapid decline of Tahs' game attendances and the opposite for the 2011 Reds. If BRE/QLD starts to consistently deliver more crowd+viewers than SYD/NSW (for S15 and Tests), this will have significant implications for gross code income and the ARU's marketing priorities, as well as presaging real business dangers for the health of the code overall in Australia.

ADL, PER and MEL viewers for the Samoa match averaged around only 11,500 per city!

Rugby is for the most part not free to air in SA. Perhaps some of the lower comps were at one point (Vodacom Cup) but I don't know if they are any longer.

No, only satelite. Our DSTV subscription compare to Fox subscription. Sky in NZ is cheaper. Poofball is our nr1 sport.

But Paarl if soccer is your number one sport the supporters aren't showing it, the attendances are rubbish at your domestic leagues I think...

compare that with the highest average attendance of any club rugby code in the world, the stormers at just over 40k per match and it looks pathetic.

You obvious know nothing about SA Poofball. You ever saw Soweto Stadium? Ever heard of Kaiser Chiefs or Orlando Pirates? Do you honestly dont think we dont have live Poofball on TV? or are you just try to troll?

There is a little bit of irony in you calling someone a troll, when you are posting on an Australian site about how you don't want SA to be a part of the Super15! :)
