Pete, lose the cultural cringe, mate. It aint racist or arrogant to think, as fans of the team ranked 2 in the world, that your team really ought to beat the team ranked 8. It's kind of normal.
Ungracious not to acknowledge the win? Sure, but plenty did just that if you care to actually read the thread.
One could be forgiven for thinking this is some unsubtle trolling.

This subtle racism is typical of the mindset of the Australian team that went out to face Ireland on Saturday. As an Aussie (currently working in Dublin) I have been ashamed of the arrogance of my nation. From Campese down to the online forums there was a streak of arrogance running through our build up to the match against the Irish that was clearly unjustified.

We totally under-estimated the Irish and were shown up both on and off the park. The Irish were far more intelligent than us in how they approached the match, they were more physical on the pitch and they destroyed us at the set piece. I had to hang my head in shame at some of the pre and post match comments made by some Australians. Thankfully, my Irish friends didn't hold it against me. I hope we have learnt from this hard lesson and that we will be more respectful of our opponents, starting with the US, in the future.

Pete

You've been hanging out with the Samoan captain, hay?

Really Pete! Racism! The first sentence of your first post. And it's Subtle Racism. We Australians get called a lot of things but Subtle is never on of them. Surely you can back it up with a few examples of the Australian racial comments towards the Irish team.
Have a look on the first page of this thread. Couldn't care less about stereotypical 'thick paddy' stuff meself and wouldn't be after calling it racist but it would certainly be indicitive of a little bit of underestimation going on. Also, on rankings: before the warm ups, all of which were lost by various experimental Irish sides, Ireland were ranked 4 in the world. Having lost those experimental/ warm up games we dropped down to 8; I wonder if Mr Kidney wondered whether a lower ranking might work to Ireland's advantage? Since alot of people on here seem to be concerned by these rankings I think he might have been right. An Irishman called Declan Kidney walked into a pub.....

I believe you live in Dublin Pete, but that's as far as the truth goes.

But this “arrogance” froth from some Irish supporters has just got way outta hand.

The Wallabies were outplayed on the day. This happens to plenty of teams every weekend – are all of those teams “arrogant”, or were they just outplayed by a team good enough to do it?

Before lathering yourself up so much about it you also should consider two things:
1 – your inference that it was Australian arrogance that lost the match demeans your own team’s ability (I assume all the Aussies needed to do was be a bit less arrogant and they would have had enough skill in the bag to polish the Irish off no wuckas?)
2 – ask yourself why you’re getting so het up about it all

I think I can help you with 2.

In 2011 Ireland lost 6 of their 9 internationals. Two of those wins were against Scotland and Italy. It’s fair to say then that Ireland managed to win 1 game in 5 against top tier opposition.

I can imagine the frustration and complex that has come with such a hiding throughout the season and the emotional release at having been able to pull off a great performance. However, this doesn’t mean that an opposition that didn’t rate you as highly as other teams based on the overwhelming evidence was arrogant.

There’s good winning as well as good losing

Pete is an Aussie living in Dublin according to his post. Did you watch any of Ireland's games in 2011? More importantly, the question you should be asking is did the Aussie players watch any of the games? If they watched Ireland V England in the 6 nations and still went into contact as high as they did on saturday I am not sure if they were arrogant or stupid.

Quade was one of the better players for the Aussies. he made a few breaks and opened up the play for others to make breaks. A lack of finishing cost us the game. We bombed 2-3 tries that we might have scored if we held the ball instead of going for the miracle pass. Quade made a few mistakes but what he did behind a pack that was so badly beaten up was impressive.

The pack was toilet.......to a man

This is the problem: as a nation we look to our 5/8 to make a few breaks...in the context of a wet and miserable night in Auckland, with the pack having a bludge, that wasn't his job...or at least it wasn't the best way to play it. We are so impressed with his ability to beat a man that we overlook that the role of the 5/8 is to control the game. What happened with Ant Fainga'a (?) against Italy with the obstruction was entirely down to QC (Quade Cooper) - he had 3 mean outside him on the right side and he didnt use them: he was too involved in his own run...beating man after man and we blame Fainga'a for getting in his way. QC (Quade Cooper)'s job was to set up one of the 4 players he had available to him.
he is a league 5/8.

So you agree that it's not racism! What is with the rest of the post. Looks like a bloke looking for an argument to ne.

You have lost that one Boet, sorry.

DOH!

To be honest, the IRB rankings mean nothing to me (I think the system is flawed) and it is particularly irrelevant during a World Cup. I only mentioned the ranking as a subtle dig at those who have repeatedly excused Wallaby fuck ups by pointing at the 'ranking'.

Its getting like all those years when Greg Norman was #1 and he couldn't win a meat tray

Definately not after an argument and apologies if it seems that way, tongue in cheek TBH and the line about DK walking into a pub was ill judged, sorry. But that said, some of the 'thick Paddy' jokes were a bit antedelluvian.

Unfortunately yes! And I saw a lot of piss poor play resulting in 6 losses from 9 games. Yes, there was the ONE excellent showing vs England, but if you could pull that out of your arse whenever you wanted then why didn't you throughout what was a pretty piss-poor competition this year?

I think Mr Kidney was focusing all of his attention on RWC and particularly our game on 17 september the result of which we now know. Agree there was lots of piss poor play but my other question, which you have neglected to answer is, did the Aussie players watch the games as well and if they did, were they arrogant or stupid to go into contact so high last weekend?

If you'd been round this forum for long you'd know we've bitched about the Wallabies doing that for ages.

Les Kiss implementing a good defensive tactic doesn't make the team playing them arrogant

So judging they were stupid then, and it looks like McCabe has got the rifle for it. In those games we were losing in August, Paddy Wallace was attempting to be the top man in the choke tackle next door to ROG, both tried their best but no wonder we went from 4 to 8 in the precious rankings. Keep both eyes across the tasman sea and you might find others bite you on the arse while you aint looking.

If you're going to use a big word, might as well spell it correctly - "antediluvian".

Paddy, they were outplayed. Simple as that. Are Ireland arrogant and stupid every time they lose? This is one of the more retarded arguments I've seen in a while. This apparent keystone of the loss, running into contact too high, has been a Wallaby fault for ages (as Gagger mentioned), and like many others seems unwilling to die. So yes, a little stupid. How it is arrogant is beyond me.

Having read the complete thread and its equivalent on the "silverfern" I think the issue of arrogance relates ONLY to the Aussie print media and the ex Players on TV. Its very clear that most print media have lost the ability for objective commentary and analysis. It does not suit the sales agenda to cut a young and developing Wallaby team the slack they earned by winning the tri nations. The team and the manager deserve respect and space for what they delivered. Respect because they won a trophy. Space to address the developmental issues that that any young team must address.

I really don't undersatnd how a Wallaby supporter can desert his country after losing a match or two. Where I come from I accept the deficiencies of my team but continue to support my country through thick and thin.

The media is always going to swing from one extreme to another. There's very little to be gained from their perspective in writing an article that says we were decent and won or we didn't play very well and lost.

Unfortunately, articles that polarise audiences get read by more people. As such, journalists resort to plenty of hyperbole.

Mr. Cully is an example of a journalist with the ability to analyse. I don't see why you should accept medicore journalism when you have such a good discussion forum on GAGR. Just charge a subscription fee and encourage a few of the regular posters to contribute a weekly article and you won't have to buy a paper again! (there is a template for this called the Tompkins Times for Liverpool FC supporters)
