I have had a couple of hours sleep and time to ruminate on the game, so my thoughts:- Points 1 and 2 general issues over all the games.

1) The Wallaby Lineout was identified as a problem last EOYT. It continued to be a problem in the RC and no specialist consultant or coach came in to fix the primary set piece possession. The Wallabies were not secure on their own ball not only in this game but in most RWC games and many possessions were of poor to middling class. On top of that the opposition set piece was under no pressure at all. This is a glaring failure by Chieka IMO, and was a point of concern greatly discussed on this forum even if people wanted to focus overly of the presence or absence of particular players instead of technical performance.
2) The scrum, while greatly improved I just do not see Australia ever getting a fair and consistent appraisal by the officials in this area, possibly because they have no idea what is going on. In one re-set the ABs got last night McCaw was bound onto Sio and Franks was driving across at 45 degree right in front of Owens, before the ball was fed. The one area I'd like to see the TMO extended is the scrum, use the video ref to review the binding and set up and penalise them, if not do away with it altogether (which I never want to see as I love the scrum when it is policed and a fair contest).

3) The Wallabies looked stuffed at the outset. Slow and lacking in power. Same as they did in long phases against the Argentinians and especially against the Scots. The pool of death eventually claimed its last scalp. I also thought the work of Hooper decreased greatly as the games and competition wore on, in both volume and effectiveness. He was conspicuous in his absence and could that also be down to pure fatigue?
4) The Wallabies attack was pretty poor throughout, I thought. Very one dimensional and lacking in the depth support that we came to admire from the Tahs in 2014. In fact they looked very Brumbies like, and that IMO is just far to predictable and ineffective against the better defensive sides. I said it a month ago and am more convinced than ever that Larkham should go back to the Brumbies and learn how to coach a decent attacking line, and no I don't think the selection of Quade Cooper would have improved anything except him getting blamed when he started to try and do things on his own when there were no real structures around him, just like Beale did towards the end.
5) The Wallabies were never in this game, others will point to the score board and the tries the Wallabies scored, but it ignores the numbers of possession, missed tackles, territory, gain line success etc. I said to my mate at 30 minutes that it was game over, unless the Wallabies came out breathing fire in the second half, and unfortunately nobody had the gas to do it. Really great effort by the Wallabies to fight back but the ABs were just cruising at that point and one man down, they then stepped up and walked away with the game.
6) Finally I like many others am disappointed in the performance of Owens. The dithering over the yellow card to Smith for an unarguable tip tackle just allows those with a conspiracy/bias agenda to flourish, as was the non penalty for the head high tackle and quite a few other decisions/lack there of. The fact is that nothing Owens did or didn't do had any impact on the outcome as point 5 stands.
7) I am not too disappointed by the result, as I said last week the Wallabies have outperformed my expectations from last year where I fully expected them to be eliminated in the Pool stages. Even after the Eden Park debacle I remained fairly pessimistic about the RWC prospects. So all up I cannot be too upset, Chieka has done remarkably well to rebuild the side and play a different style in under 12 months.

Finally we could hope that the ARU would leverage off the interest that the RWC has generated, but we are talking about the ARU here.

All good, well thought out points @Gnostic.

Is NZ's dominance of world rugby becoming a problem for the IRB?

Is it healthy for an international sport to be so dominated?

Food for thought..

No. I'd say it's a problem for other teams to raise their standards and try to match them. Plenty of NH teams in particular have high player numbers so no reason they cannot.
No, it isn't ideal for a sport to be so dominated, I agree, but the impetus for change has to come from the chasing pack, not the front-runners.

Hmm, not much in that, coming across in cover, and a split second after ball is passed. You know, it is OK sometimes for McCaw to be tackled! ;)

I was talking about the height of the tackle - not so much the timing.
Not too worried about it - just adding to the point that Kepu was on that fine edge you talked about earlier.

David Codey (61)
Thats even worse: I thought he said to pull out; putting less into the tackle - where's that in the laws?

He said something like that. I think he knew Kepu wouldn't have been able to fully pull out but because Carter decided to fake injury for a while he thought he had to do something about it.

I'm not against the penalty - but it was certainly a 50/50 call.

Shameless Repost.

This may help some of the more emotionally charged Gaggerlanders to construct posts in the aftermath of the game. Just tick and flick and fill in the gaps.

Rugby World Cup Squad Outrage Template (Australian Style)

Why are there more
◻︎ Reds
◻︎ Waratahs
◻︎ Brumbies
than anyone else and not enough
◻︎ Reds
◻︎ Waratahs
◻︎ Brumbies
◻︎ Force
◻︎ Rebels
◻︎ Overseas Players like ________ in the squad.
I am sick and tired of all the petty interstate bias and parochialism. It is supposed to be the Australian National Team.

Why is ______________ in the team?? Any fool could see that he is
◻︎ too old
◻︎ too small
◻︎ too inexperienced
◻︎ too big
◻︎ too risky
◻︎ a penalty magnet
◻︎ too slow
◻︎ ______________

Don’t get me started on _____________________. Why is he there?
◻︎ He’s no longer the player he was in 2011.
◻︎ He’s a flat track bully and can’t step up to Test level.
◻︎ He’s only there because he plays for _______________.
◻︎ He has a serious attitude problem and only plays for himself.
◻︎ He never passes.
◻︎ He can’t kick.
◻︎ He is a seagull and avoids the tough stuff that players in his position should be doing.
◻︎ He can’t tackle.
◻︎ He goes missing on defence.
◻︎ He ______________________.
(Tick one or more of the above.)

I would have chosen ____________________ and ___________________ instead of ___________________ and _______________ on the basis that I am a ___________________.

If I was Coach, I would have
◻︎ chosen a more balanced squad that Blind Freddy could see that it was the best available.
◻︎ won the Bledisloe Cup and the RWC multiple times by now.
◻︎ stopped Bill Pulver and the other sycophants at ARU from interfering with the Wallabies and their preparation.
◻︎ resigned unless ______________________________.
◻︎ ignored all the ignorant, parochial, fickle fluffybunnies opinions on Green and Gold Rugby. What would those keyboard warriors know about rugby?

I can’t believe that _______________
◻︎ has a Wallaby top up payment.
◻︎ hasn’t <got a bigger / been offered a> Wallaby top up payment.

For use after RWC:
◻︎ We won. Bill is finally back where he belongs. This is awesome news. We’re the best in the world. The Kiwis choked yet again and they can only win at home. The Poms are over-rated over-paid over-hyped wannabes like I have always said they were. I knew it would happen and the rest of you who didn’t believe me when I said it can just go jump in Lake Burley Griffin in the middle of winter for all I care about your so called opinions. #ChampionWallabies #ToldYouSo

◻︎ We didn’t win. I told you so. It was obvious that this would happen because Cheka is a _________________ and if only they had followed my advice we would have won. Any idiot knows that Rugby is first and foremost about < attack / pressure / territory / defence / physicality / possession / set pieces / a flexible game plan >. The team was rubbish and deserved to lose because they didn't focus on < attack / pressure / territory / defence / physicality / possession / set pieces / a flexible game plan >. They are an embarrassment to all those that so proudly wore the Green and Gold jumper in 1991 and 1999. Bill Pulver and his bunch of in-bred cronies running the ARU should be shot at dawn and their carcasses hung off the Sydney Harbour Bridge as a reminder of what they have done to our once magnificent Australian Rugby. #WeakAsPiss #WallabyWannabies

◻︎ The standard of refereeing was appalling and biased against us based on preconceived ideas.

I can see the irony and sarcasm in all those points except the bit about the "...fickle, fluffy bunny opinions on Green and Gold Rugby." Between us, I'm 100% sure we know all there is to know about rugby, and unquestionably more than any ref who has ever officiated in any game.

2 tackle infringements in a short period = very lucky in my view. Many refs would have carded him.

Normally if agree, but is suspect Owens knew the first penalty was very marginal so didn't really take it into account in his thinking. Even the high tackle, while a definite penalty was only an inch misplaced and at the very low end of a foul.

I've now had a sleep & a feed and watched a replay. Seems to me that had Smith not been (rightly) carded it could have ended in a flogging. Wobs just looked flat from the get-go & losing Douglas & Giteau did them no favours.

In terms of the bits people are bleating about:

The irony of Barnes missing a forward pass that results in an AB try would've been brilliant, but IMO it's flat out've the hands at worst.

Owens clearly didn't want to RC Smith, I reckon he said "penalty only" in the hope/ expectation Veldsman would recommend a YC, that being the correct decision.

Anyhoo, 'Twas a great game, best RWC Final ever IMO & not just cos we won it. In the end I think your schedule caught up with you: earlier someone put up the minutes played by each of your blokes, someone else then added the numbers for the AB. I'd love some one to add in the Super Rugby minutes, reckon every one of your blokes would have a higher number than the guy they marked last night.

Someone also said something about this WC being a year too early for the Wobs, after last night I'd have the concur (same person also said it was a year too late for AB, they got that bit wrong; and of course our old mate @qwerty51 has been banging on forever about Carter (MOTM) & McCaw being past it, on the evidence of last night they clearly weren't).

Lastly I see Fairfax are trying to manufacture a stomp out've a fairly standard bit of breakdown play. A bit like McCaw's supposed elbowing of Louw or Pocock's supposed kneeing of the Welsh guy. Absolute media beat-up BS. I note that none of the "stories" are open for readers comments, reckon that's so no one can tell them how full of shit they are.

Wearing my AB jersey to work tomorrow & taking a stuffed kiwi that plays "Ka Mate" when squeezed. Which it will be. Repeatedly. Playing "Waltzing Matilda" 10-12 times on Friday cannot go unpunished :)

Also just re-watched the no knock on call near the end of the first half. There were two prett clear knock ons by NZ in a row and perhaps one by Aus.

However Owens was so far away from the play he wasn't in a position to make the call. He actually asked the touch judge 'knock on or play on'. He obviously gets the play on call as a few seconds later says 'play on'.

So it seems that both poor misses at the end of the half were due to the touch judges not Owens (assuming they both answered his question - and he heard the response).

You could argue that Owens should have been in a position to make the calls himself, but it is clear the support from the touch judges wasn't adequate.

Scotty

David Codey (61)
The call that didn't go Fardy and Pocock's way in the lead up to the first NZ try was certainly at Owens feet.

Not only does Fardy get on the ball, he is then held by Carter who has gone off his feet, then Franks comes in to clean out Pocock from almost perpendicular to the sideline. Pretty blatant infringements and hard to see how the Wallabies didn't win a penalty here.

ps people complaining about all the kiwi fucktards on their "facebook feeds" (?) have ZERO recourse.

It's facebook.

You signed up for it.

It's your fucking fault.

You don't see awesome corrosively-handsome pricks like me on fuckin' "facebook."

Are you also the type of person who, on sunny afternoons, voyages out to the Mangere sewage ponds, of your own accord, and then proceeds to get very, very cross when the Mona Lisa itself is not bobbing around out there, half-submerged in the execrable effluence and excrement? "It's not fair! This sucks! Where are the priceless works of art? Fuckin' WHERE?"

Anytime we complain about Fairfax journalism here, just be thankful we don't have this piece of toejam to put up with. He makes a living pissing the Kiwis off, now he shows everyone how not to win.

Folau wasn't that bad. He got smashed a couple of times. I don't know if even being fully fit would have helped much.

teach, I'm not a huge Kurtley Beale fan, (as many regulars here would know), however, even with limited opportunities, in this campaign, IMO, he is the #1 Australian #15 at the moment.
Folau is not delivering to his ability. Kurtley looks dangerous, every time he gets the ball.
I believe in giving credit where it's warranted.
I would have stuck the "under-performing" Folau on the bench!
