Down the track I'd like to see Russia get a RWC but I think there are areas more deserving given their history with RWC & the stadiums they already have, I'd like to see any of the three following options:

Italy/Europe (play bulk of games in Italy but have tier 2 & 3 nations like Spain, portugal, germany, eastern europeans countries, etc have some of the pool games).

Argentina/Surrounding countries (same principle as Italy/europe)

USA/Canada (joint RWC host)

Any of those three I believe would be good for spreading the game.

Agree although I tend to think Argentina may struggle, the advantage both Italy or USA have of course the ease of travel from England and Europe where travel is required of course for Italy. All suck for us down here re game times but "c'est la vie"

Russia is VERY serious about Rugby.
Plus they have more money than they know what to do with so can actually afford to host the RWC
I doubt that they will whinge and cry poor afterwards like those over the ditch.
Russia is very busy working on the IOC to have Rugby a regular olympic sport.

Just remember it was NZ and later Aussie that started this WC torney and the NH unions were against it. Now its the IRB cash cow!
So what are you implying EGG? This RWC has been the best ever even the IRB have said that!!!!

My preference for the next RWC location is Italy. They're the only 6N/3N member not to have played host to a RWC match, and they're getting stronger every year. They have a plethora of high capacity rectangular stadia (see below) so there'd be no need to spend billions on upgrades. Plus, Italy has the advantage of being a popular tourist destination. People would much rather go to Italy than Georgia, Russia or even Japan. It's also right next to France and not far from the UK, so there would be no problem finding supporters even if the Italians weren't going to pack out every game. An Italian RWC could even give a QF and a few pool matches to neighboring countries like France did in 2007.

I doubt if Italy could hold the RWC because right now the country is in deep financial strife and will take years just to repay the interest owed to other Countries in Euro!!!

south Africa was guilty of hosting the worst fifa world cup in recent history so i'm begging it not to go there.

So what games did you go to I loved it and professionally organised. Not a fan of the vuzs.. but i guess you are judging it from the comfort of your own home.

Fairly forgone conclusion the RWC will be in SA for 2023. Any bets?

Far more profitable for the IRB than any other SH nation.

I think italy is a great chance. they would make an absolute bag at that as well.

that said - can't see italy paying the circa $200m fee anytime in the near future.

while i'd love to see it in North America (it s a great middle point for Pacific and Europe) the area is so damn big that it would make it difficult for fans. it's like having the world cup in all of europe, without the efficient train transport!

Argentina would be awesome. I agree, mostly for the steaks and the women. SA aside I think Italy is probably favoured by the IRB - provides a new nation with the tourny and keeps it close to the northern unions. ideal for travel and tv coverage in the major rugby regions.

Why would SA be any more profitable than Aus? Time zones for Euro viewers?

ya. time zones. SA is basically the same timezone as Europe. works well for north america and south america too.

bit less ideal for australia, but as the soccer world cup showed, it wasn't horrendous.

So far, the RWC has followed a pattern 3N/5N/3N/5N/3N/6N/3N/6N/Japan, which could be considered as a "3N" as it is in their "area of influence" (Or, put differently, Japan is in the SH rugbystically), so I think that 2023 will go to the NH. I first thought the russian bid was ridicoulous, now I actually think they may get it. Italy is more likely, though.
My preference would be Argentina. If they manage to present a decent bid, they should definitely get 2027.

Growing the game is a great thing to strive for and I would like to see some of the countries mentioned getting RWC over the next 20 years or so. But the IRB needs to also look after the traditional rugby nations and a 1 for development the none for tradition rotation could work nicely. If the IRB just has all development WCs then they're basically saying, we know you guys will watch or go to RWC no matter where they are so we'll cater the game to the people who aren't currently watching as avidly.

Also growing the game just through RWCs would be a very slow process as you're only really growing it in one country every 4 years at best. Even giving games to neighbouring countries wont grow it that much in that country as teams will only spend a few days in the neighbouring country around the game. So there might be a buzz for a weekend and then it's gone.

Also the problem with the WC is that it generates so much interest, then when it's over people from Tier 2 & 3 nations are asking ok so when the next tournament my nation is involved in. Then the find out the WC is the ONLY tournament their nation is involved in and only if they are lucky to qualify and they lose interest again.

I think the IRB needs to have some form of regular competition for tier 2 & 3 nations if they're truely serious about growing the game globally. Europe has enough Tier 2 & 3 nations to a 2nd yearly international competition along the lines of the 6Ns. USA, Canada, Japan, Samoa, Tonga & Fiji would also make a pretty good competition.

Both the RWC and club competitions like S15 and HEC have grow the game hugely. I'm sure USA etc. could have a club competition along simliar lines as either S15 or HEC and Europe already has 2 tiers of club competition so they could expand.

Giving new fans something to cheer and get excited about every 4 years is nice. But growing the game should mean giving new fans something to get excited about the same way that we do. Now the RWC is over I'm looking forward to Leinster's 1st HEC game away to Montpellier. To grow the game new fans need stuff like that to look forward based around their own nation and their own clubs. Well IMHO anyway.
