I would definitely go to that. I love how the Ruskies are making a big push into the game. I read somewhere they have built 8 stadiums recently for their domestic competition.

Would definitely be good for the game there.

And in Central/Eastern Europe generally. The excitement it would develop amongst countries other than Georgia and Romania (well, in addition to those) would be immense.

Of course, at the same time... hosting it in the Americas somewhere would also be amazing.

Yep, pushed by the Deputy PM!

Russian entrepreneur Roustam Tariko is keen to invest.

If you've seen the IRB player graph kicking around, and noticed that the US have more players then Aus, it's scary to think about the potential of the US and Russia.

Were those stadiums meant to be for the soccer 2018/22 world cups they bid on?? If they have built them for that, which they didnt win, they will now be bidding on everything and anything. Don't be surprised to see a 'definetly the last time this time' John Farnham concert pop up.

Would be good for the game. If Russia is the host country it would be good if Georgia and Romania got a couple of games.

Regardless, a successful bid would be excellent for both Rugby in Russia and the iRB in general. Just looking at Wikipedia, they included 15 stadiums in their bid portfolio, with 9 proposed and only 6 built. All of the stadiums (both proposed and completed) had capacities over 40,000, with one each in St. Petersburg and Moscow seating 69,000 and 89,000 respectively. I think the Ruskies are serious about this bid, and whilst they're probably not going to go ahead with all of the planned stadiums from the FIFA bid, it's not just a case of filling empty seats because most of them still have to be built. They're not going to be Number 1 in the world any time soon, but as long as the iRB help them along we should be able to wake the 'sleeping dragon' most will admit Russia could very well be.

Being from Canada as I am, they would be pushing their luck with the winter cold. If they pushed the tournament back till October/November, they better have a few indoor stadiums amongst them.

November is flirting with cold and snow.

I think we'll see the following bids emerge for 2023
Russia
USA (possible joint with Canada - games in toronto and vancouver)
Italy
Argentina
South Africa

Where do I hope it goes?

USA/Canada
Russia
Italy or Argentina

Where will it go?
South Africa - zzzzzzz

What sort of stadiums would the US/Canada bid offer, Sir Arthur? Aren't they just about all artifical grass now? Mind you, I'd love it if the RWC did go there.

Russia is VERY serious about Rugby.
Plus they have more money than they know what to do with so can actually afford to host the RWC
I doubt that they will whinge and cry poor afterwards like those over the ditch.
Russia is very busy working on the IOC to have Rugby a regular olympic sport.

There's a plethora of large grass stadiums in the U.S. Probably more grass than turf.

The skydome in toronto is bigger, but possibly the worst stadium in the world and on synthetic.

in canada, the two stadiums that spring to mind are BMO in Toronto (25,000 can be expanded up to 35,000) and it is natural grass.

Vancouver - BC Place 55,000. Its top grade artificial, but I believe that's a legacy issue from the fact it was previousy a closed roof stadium. They now have a retractable roof (really interesting design - only kind of its in the world) and I've heard they are looking to go back to natural grass now that they can get some sun light in.

I was going to ask if they would have the infrastructure to hold such an event. They certainly seem to be investing time and money in rugby over there.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup will give them infrastructure to burn.

Which is lucky, because if Russia lost to the USA at the 2023 RWC in Russia, they probably would burn it.

Cold War Rugby World Cup style! It would be great for Russia and the game to host the RWC. By 2023 they also might be fielding a good, consistent team. It would definitely be cold, but I am sure players could adapt. It's the crowd who has to worry about freezing to death. A mix of freezing temperatures and potent/lethal vodka sounds like a marketers dream.

Don't worry. The Wallabies will prepare well for the conditions by having a training camp on the Gold Coast.
