Rugby World Cup. In What Universe

In what universe is it conceivable that a Kiwi, not just a Kiwi, but an ex All Black, could coach the Wallabies to a World Cup Win in New Zealand against the Blacks?.

Completely leaving aside his abilities as a coach, who in the ARU imagines that this is an even faintly plausible scenario?

It’s probably far to late now, but surely they’ve got to get rid of Deans before he completely destroys the team.

Steve Bradbury could coach the Wallabies to a World Cup win against the Blacks. It's the other teams that are the problem.:fishing

G'day Haggard,

Could you be more specific about the problem? You would know that there are a lot of foreign coaches in international teams these days. Graham Henry even coached the British and Irish Lions.

You can't be suggesting that he's losing on purpose?

Although it would explain a few things. :nta:

Do you know any Kiwis? Even the ones who take out Australian citizenship can't help themselves, they've got to barrack for the All Blacks.

Deans is an ex All Black. Who can possibly imagine that he can coach a team to beat the Blacks when they are hosting the World Cup, given their "outstanding" record in the competition.

That's without even looking at his results as the Wallaby coach.

Funny you mention that Scarfie, did you ever see the doco on the Lions tour when Henry was in charge?
I wasn't so sure that Henry was on the same page as the tourists! Anyone else see that?

He's probably not loosing on purpose, but you can't deny that he's setting up the team to have very little chance of winning.

any problems with an ex-kiwi being at flyhalf? Or on the wing?

Australia (in all sports) will happily 'adopt' anyone who is good. (There's no quicker refugee pathway than to be a world class athlete), so I'm happy with that, and the odd South African.

It's a lot more like a job now anyway, and as long as they're performing, fine.

When Deans played it was much more about national pride, and I just can't imagine that scenario.

Imagine him going home at Christmas after he's coached the Wallabies to knock the Kiwis out of the World Cup they've hosted.

"G'Day Deansie," they'd say... "Great job coaching. I always knew you were a great coach, since the Canterbury days. Congratulations on the Wallabies fantastic win, guess we'll try again in 4 more years"

You can't, can you. You can't imagine him showing his face in NZ ever again.

Let's just say that I am buying into your grand Kiwi conspiracy. Robbie Deans took the job so that he ruin the reputation of the Wallabies and build a squad that has no hope of winning the RWC.
In the process of doing this Robbie completely ruins his reputation as a coach and will find it hard to get a high level coaching position for his next job.

Why would a man who's lively hood depends on his ability to coach a team do this just so his beloved All Blacks can hold the William Webb Ellis trophy?

I respect your right to have an opinion, but to put it politely I disagree.

How have the Wallabies got any better under Deans?

Tactically their play is awful, the scrum is decidedly worrying, and what do you have to do to get dropped from the side? Why is Giteau still there? He can't tackle, he doesn't run the ball with any conviction, but I suppose at least he can still kick goals. AH HAHA AHHAHAHHAAAAAAAAAA.

As much as the thought has crossed my mind, Haggard, your theory doesn't have weight. Picture this - a photo of Deans holding the Webb Ellis trophy on the front page of his resume when he applies for the Darkness top job after the World Cup. It would guarantee he gets it.

I'm not saying it’s a conspiracy.

I’m saying this is the All Blacks, the best team in the World, but they can’t win the World Cup (a 2nd time).

This is their best chance, (well until the next time) and no Kiwi is going to be able to put their full effort into beating them.

He’s an ex All Black for goodness sake, how could he live with knocking them out again?

He’d easily get another coaching job, and probably an Order on NZ, if they win by beating us, but he’d be pilloried if he coached the side that knocked them out.

You ARE kidding. Turn up for Coach of the All Blacks after knocking them out, AT HOME. And just to rub it in, have a photo of it on your resume.

I can picture it, but I can't see it as a successful strategy. Actually i can't picture it, cause we've got NO chance while he's coach.

General consensus is, he wasn't. Not the happiest of tours, from all I've heard from those on it. Nothing compared to the abortion in 2005, but not great. It destroyed Henry's Welsh team, too.

I think it would go the other way if the Wallabies manage raise the trophy next year.
Henry and NZRU would be crucified. The AB fans would be calling for two things. Blood and that Dean's should be offered what ever he wants to take Henry's now vacant job.
